I once had Waluigi vs Crash for a random SSB Championship. The match was INSANE!

What kind of logic is that? What does not being in whatever the last Mario game is affect Pauline's chances? If she got in, it would be because of her status as an iconic arcade character. That's like saying "I'm skeptical that Bowser Jr will be in Super Smash Bros after his absence from Super Mario 3D World & Mario Kart 8."

If Pauline was getting in Smash, it'd make sense for Nintendo to start promoting her in other games. Her inclusion in Aces may or may not indicate if she gets in Smash.

That's all I was getting at.

I really hope the Champions aren't wasted this way. It might make sense now, but several years later when the next version of Link and Zelda replace the BotW versions, the Champions are going to stick out way too much.

Which is why they shouldn't be playable.

I feel like including them in a moveset now is basically dooming them to be replaced with something else in a future Smash game.

Sheesh, you don't have to act like the Champions are absolute trash. BotW was a good game, and I'm rather fond of all four of those guys. It'd be fantastic to see any of them get in Smash.

Why are you comparing Pauline to Rosalina when Pauline is a Donkey Kong character. Last time I checked, Pauline is a cast member of one of the most popular arcade games of all time. So again, Why are you comparing her to Rosalina?

And no. I'm not going to argue with you about whether or not Pauline is a Mario character. She is clearly a Donkey Kong character and I've explained why on this thread 100,000 times. She has only appeared in one Mario game, where she was surrounded by references to Donkey Kong and Donkey Kong Country. She is deemed a Donkey Kong character in Super Smash Bros for Wii U.

DK Arcade and its sequels has largely been absorbed into part of the Mario series. The fact that the remnants of that classic arcade game's style has been "Mario vs Donkey Kong" and "Mini Mario & Friends" alone states that while Donkey Kong as a standalone series has been branded as what Rare made it since 1994 with Country, which Pauline hasn't appeared in, as a generality.
That's why most people will attribute her to Mario over DK, as right or wrong as that may be.
Odyssey, however, has been her big push as a character to the mass audience. Weither or not she'd be placed in the game with a DK symbol for a Mushroom, it's generally agreed that Odyssey's Pauline will be the crux of her identity in Smash Switch.
Even as a Donkey Kong series character, her lack of appearances in Mario Spinoffs, unlike DK, Diddy, Dixie, kremlings including K. Rool, etc.

It may depend on wether or not Odyssey will be largely represented in Smash Switch at all. Smash has kind of had a history of being a generation behind as far as new game representation goes, especially for the 3D Mario series. The only exceptions being Super Mario 64 for Smash 64 and 3D Land for Smash 3DS and that's mostly because those games came along within their respective systems lifespan rather than in the first year or two. That's mainly due to the nature of the roster being decided earlier on.

I think Pauline's best bet is to show up in various Mario spin off's first to get a better idea of how her appearance in Odyssey effected her popularity, and maybe then she may have a better chance in the next Smash game.

The same reason any other character has support. I liked Cappy's abilities and I think it'd be cool if he were in Smash, whether that's somehow as a full-blown character or a single move for Mario.

Oh, no, no, no. You misunderstood me. I agree with you. I think Cappy will be on top of Mario's head, as his hat. Spending most of his time quite and eyes closed. If Mario is idle long enough, maybe the eyes can show up and look around real quick, but nothing like you're worried about.

That really doesn't change the fact that Pauline was, for all intents and purposes, lost to the sands of time (and low-budget Mario vs. DK games) until Odyssey redesigned her and built upon her original character beyond "damsel in distress". Also, why the hell does it matter? Donkey Kong and Mario are sibling series. The "popular arcade game" features Mario in the lead. It's arguing semantics.

I do think the Rosalina comparison isn't as justifiable as people say it is, but not because they're "from different series". Pauline's role in Odyssey is greatly exaggerated, yeah she sings the song, yeah she and her city are everywhere in marketing, but in the overall game, New Donk City is just one kingdom of many. Rosalina, on the other hand, is a central character in the original Galaxy, wields infinite cosmic power, and is a core focus of the game's story, especially in things like the storybook. The various spin-off appearances only cemented her further.

That should be one of his aerials for sure, or a custom Up Special. I don't know why it wasn't changed, but you bring up a good point.

I think it's more likely that Fire Emblem will get a newcomer. It'll get a cut in either Lucina or Roy, though I feel Lucina is more likely to be cut. With FE16 on the horizon, and with the knowledge that Sakurai and Nintendo have internal knowledge of games in development. It's just like Roy's and Greninja's case. Sakurai chose Roy before his game even came out, and Greninja was chosen before he even knew how'd he would work in-game.

Somewhat but with important differences.

In the case of Roy, he was really fortunate to have extremely good timing because as he was only considered after Sakurai looked for more additions after getting all the base characters completed in Melee. He had perfect timing as his game was slated to be released around the time of Melee. More importantly, he was similar enough to Marth to be feasible as a last-minute clone character whilst distinct enough in the eyes of Sakurai to be interesting. If it weren't for the last two points and Sakurai loking for clones after getting every other character completed, Roy wouldn't have been considered.

In the case of Greninja, extremely good timing was critical. The most favourable Pokemon game in terms of timing was X and Y, which was released in the sweetspot of ~one year after the roster was finalized but ~one year before Smash 4 was released. In that regard the closest comparison in terms of timing for Smash Switch when it comes to FE would be Fire Emblem Echoes. Assuming the roster was finalized in 2016 like people speculate, Shadows of Valentia (similar to X and Y) would have been the FE game with the most favourable timing, being released ~one year after the roster was finalized but ~one year before Smash Switch is set to release.

I think the better comparison to a FE16 character would have been if they included a FE10 character in Brawl. This is because similar how FE10 was released in the same year Brawl was originally intended to, FE16 would be released in the same year Smash Swicth is set to. But we didn't get a FE10 character. We got Ike, and he was heavily derived from Path of Radiance which was released around the same time the Brawl roster was finalised somewhere around 2005 (with one obvious exception).

Heck, Sakurai himself stated that had Awakening been released several months earlier or later, Robin might not have made it in, so timing is extremely important.

Honestly speaking, if a FE16 character is to be playable, I'd expect it to be more of a Roy situation (being a last-minute clone) than a Greninja (due to timing).

About Fire Emblem, low sales haven't ever stopped a Fire Emblem character from getting in, just look at Ike.

Pretty much, and we have also had newcomer characters whose only major, recent game appearance at the time was a remake ( due to FireRed and LeafGreen) so Shadows s of Valentia being a remake would not necessarily stop Celica from being considered.

I've kinda lost hope for either.


Tingle hasn't done anything noteworthy in recent years besides getting in Hyrule Warriors (and practically every notable Zelda character got in that game). I don't feel like there's much to warrant him from not being an Assist Trophy for the third time.

I thought Midna might have had a chance in Smash 4, but she ended up becoming an Assist Trophy, much like many of the other popular Zelda characters people wanted in Smash. If she was ever going to get in the roster, it would've been in Brawl or Smash 4.

It's the same thing that happens every Smash game.

Here's my stance when it comes to Breath of the Wild's Champions.
They're a major and beloved set of side characters that will probably never be seen again outside of Hyrule Warriors: It's An Actual Sequel This Time Edition.
And you know who that falls in line with?
, who got in as part of a gimmick of 's moveset.
Skull Kid for MM, Midna for TP, and Ghirahim in SS.
Who all are assist trophies.
I do not see any individual Champion being made a playable character because none of them are that extremely notable over another.
I do not see all the champions becoming playable because JE-SUS.
All will get trophies, and some Assist Trophies are the most likely case. Revali's gale might become part of Link's up B, Daruk's protection as a unique shield to Link, and then Mipha and Urbosa as AT's seems quite plausible.
Zelda's been rocking the 3 spells from OoT for the past 3 games so god knows when/if they'd get replaced.

Agreed. The champions are one offs and Sakurai already fell into that trap with Sheik. Luckily Sheik appears in BotW as a full costume, so boom shes easy to keep another go. Ganondorf is the only one they might need to give an original look to match BotW or they might give him his HW look. TP look is out.

And back to your point, I'm sure those two moves will be part of Links moveset. Mipha doesn't seem as likely as her counterpart Sidon. Urbosas move screams AT as well.

Somewhat but with important differences.

In the case of Roy, he was really fortunate to have extremely good timing because as he was only considered after Sakurai looked for more additions after getting all the base characters completed in Melee. He had perfect timing as his game was slated to be released around the time of Melee. More importantly, he was similar enough to Marth to be feasible as a last-minute clone character whilst distinct enough in the eyes of Sakurai to be interesting. If it weren't for the last two points and Sakurai loking for clones after getting every other character completed, Roy wouldn't have been considered.

In the case of Greninja, extremely good timing was critical. The most favourable Pokemon game in terms of timing was X and Y, which was released in the sweetspot of ~one year after the roster was finalized but ~one year before Smash 4 was released. In that regard the closest comparison in terms of timing for Smash Switch when it comes to FE would be Fire Emblem Echoes. Assuming the roster was finalized in 2016 like people speculate, Shadows of Valentia (similar to X and Y) would have been the FE game with the most favourable timing, being released ~one year after the roster was finalized but ~one year before Smash Switch is set to release.

I think the better comparison to a FE16 character would have been if they included a FE10 character in Brawl. This is because similar how FE10 was released in the same year Brawl was originally intended to, FE16 would be released in the same year Smash Swicth is set to. But we didn't get a FE10 character. We got Ike, and he was heavily derived from Path of Radiance which was released around the same time the Brawl roster was finalised somewhere around 2005 (with one obvious exception).

Heck, Sakurai himself stated that had Awakening been released several months earlier or later, Robin might not have made it in, so timing is extremely important.

Honestly speaking, if a FE16 character is to be playable, I'd expect it to be more of a Roy situation (being a last-minute clone) than a Greninja (due to timing).

I think Sonic was added late into Brawl's development, but don't quote me on that, and Chrom was changed to Robin during development.
