I loved PM64 and PM:TTYD. Paper Mario can bring a lot to the table despite people passing him off as "another Mario". You can add me as a supporter.

It's really a shame that people are just calling him another Mario.

Sure, they both go by the name Mario, but they are not one in the same. I'm really sorry for you guys. PM has so much potential wrapped up inside him.

My only complaint is the possible representation of Sticker Star. I'd rather see more of the first three Paper Mario games in him, not Sticker Star.

ok....now I get what's going on.

I have just been playing pm64, just got to ch7, but I decided to unexpectively suspend my playtrhough because of what I think is happening in the rtc thread and the replies that I got here unexpectively.

Let me just explain some stuff because new people would not get why I will probably not rate him in the rtc thread.

So, the current rating is the third iteration of it. I think I may have rated him once and it was the second one. The first was very poor, but honestly, I wouldn't rate him before as I would today, he still was pretty underrated. The second one however....that one was fishy. it's 29-30, but the rating was done ON THE DAY THE STAGE WAS ANNOUNCED!

What this means is that it became underrated very solidly. The thing however is most ratings were very questionable. It was numbers that wouldn't tell what the comment was, very low or very high numbers for reasons that didn't worth that much, etc..... Basically, it wasn't only him, but I was still disappointed by the rtc.

Now, this is a renew of the rtc. Tbh, it was shocking to see that so far, ALL rating are honestly very accurate, well justified, numbers actually means something accurately. I was beginning to think the rating were very good, but Now, I see today that he would be so far the ONLY case of underrating.

This just baffles me. The most respectable rating I would honestly expect is 55 considering the current rating. Currently, I expect another 30, 35 if I'm optimistic, but considering we now know his popularity....look, I can't explain how frustrating it is to AGAIN see the same problem he had since forever while the truth is it's not as big as people expect it to be.

What these first ratings tellls me is people simply do not care. I saw this a lot, you don't care but you rate anyway...

So, for the two who just came here, this has been expected since 2 weeks....I however never expected he would be the only one after 20 well made ratings.

Let me get to the actuall reply because these do matter.

I'll explain why you're telling the truth despite this sounding counter intuitive.

There's a very popular repping logic going on that states that characters reps series and subseries relatively to the importance. You would use the numbers of rep a lot for comparison.

But Paper Mario has became to me an obvious flaw with this logic: this logic implies that the characters only reps themselves, nothing else. What I mean is the characters would rep JUST the character and he's ONLY seen as a rep of his series/subseries.

Meaning that pretty much every offset of an existing character is pretty much "not right" according to this logic. The best examples are dr mario and toon link.

Even worse, g&w and rob would actually not even fit because their characters doesn't exist, it was created or abstracted.

Which leads me to another logic that so far, I feel I'm the only who thinks like this: there's no such things as series or subseries rep, ever.

The characters would rep a subset coresponding to their world meaning everything specifically related to a certain subset is reflected by character playstyle in his moveset. The character is only the delegate, not the whole package. The character is in the subset, but it's not just about him.

Rosalina isn't just her, she's the galaxy subset of mario, not just a mario rep.

This logic is very accurate, but so unpopular.

Which is why you should even EXPECT to see hate towards him based on a seemingly flawed logic, I explain this in the OP btw, counterarguments section.

Also, no matter which logic you use, you always consider it before the moveset potential because the opposite doesn't make sense. The first logic would view him as redundancy while there's something quite wrong and the second logic would view him as an addition, but consider every factor, it's one of the most worthy one thus, he should be considered likely.

Hope I explained you the sad situation that I encounter since I support him, but comments like these overshadows the detractor for me, so, like this :)

Just want to clarify your first statement, this was long before used to counter the argument, but I realised it was wrong, it's actually an ADVANTAGE to be mario think about it....

And yes they are actually equal.

What differs is NOT the characters, but the subset. The problem is this alone makes him an addition considering the potential, a huge addition.

And sticker star, yeah, I'm extremely worried for this e3 but please, consider that nintendo lately only talks about everything but SS. they clearly acknowledge the first games. Also, read the OP, there's evidences that they SHOULD be aware of what people think of SS.

I'll add you in the list when I can, typed on Wiiu..

Eh, i'm a bit iffy about the whole subset thing though i'm fully on board with not taking reps as a be all end all factor in including a character. Paper Mario can rep his own series. If Yoshi and Wario are able to do that, then I don't see why PMario can't do the same.

Why it's so iffy if it's just abstraction based?

See, NO MATTER WHAT HE'S SERIES IS, IT DOESN'T MATTER!

Why it would? It's not like changing the icon of the character changes completely.

And what I meant with subset is it would imply the following:

Paper Mario would rep the paper subset of mario. That subset is reserved to him. Mario doesn't take him, nor dr mario does, in fact, no one currently does it. No matter if mario or paper mario series, it's still an addition.

This is what I meant with subset. Let's take another case!!

Toon link is the "toon" subset of link. Easy?

The thing is, that subet was ABSTRACTED. There's no subseries here, we are still in the same zelda series for both link and toon link, but the subset differs.

Yoshi and wario case honestly doesn't prove anything, their subset sre extremely different. mario or yoshi, or whatever the heck you want, the series and subseries is not defining repping it is the "essentials " of the character world.

All these subset combined forms the set, the whole repping. You're trying to have the msot diverse AND uniformly broad. This is why I see kkr being the most likely newcomer (minus ryu because files) and I do see Paper Mario close to isaac.

As for G&W, his subset was abstracted. It was just decided that there's a subset in the repping that is the hardware line of g&W. Having nothing from raw material top rep this, you get why a character was created, but HE HAS NO SERIES!!! Only his subset and he was ONLY created to reflect that subset.

Do you see the logic here?

You completely forget series and subseries, you really only care about the subsets which are the essential of characters's world.

Their playstyles reflects it, not jsut the characters repping somethign to add a +1 to the representative counter....

I suppose I can agree with that. Bottom line is we both agree that reps shouldn't take away a character's chances of being included as DLC.

Hmm, my bad, perhaps I should have said that they aren't necessarily equal . They have some things in common, but also a lot of differences.

I'm relieved to know this. While Super Paper Mario was different, it wasn't bad. Sticker Star however, I hate for multiple reasons (my biggest reason, while silly, is how they showed us a chain chomp partner in promotional material, and then took it away. Boy that enraged me :grrr:). This worry came from how the Paper Mario stage is 2/3 Sticker Star, and 1/3 Thousand Year Door. As much as I dislike Sticker Star, I wouldn't have minded 1/4 Paper Mario 64, 1/4 Thousand Year Door, 1/4 Super Paper Mario, and 1/4 Sticker Star.

I'll add you in the list when I can, typed on Wiiu..
Hmm, the support list? Sure, why not :). I feel Paper Mario could be unique enough, (if of course they don't over rep Sticker Star, but you've subdued those worries a bit). I wouldn't be mad if say Waluigi/Daisy/Captain Toad made it in necessarily, but I believe Paper Mario might have some of the most "uniqueness" out of the four.

However, I don't know if I'd make a fancy version of him for my signature, he's already got a hat and mutache, and all in general, Fancy Paper Mario just seems silly to envision .

How was my analysis on Paper Mario in the RTC thread, I think I did a pretty good job with it.
.....ok, let me just do a quick thing of what I think of rtc.

Yesterday, the message I got from most people is that most do not care. I saw broken logics all over the place. Yours is kinda included considering the number you put.

I will not detail because I said I would take a break of the characters forums except for this thread, but I'm not willing to repeat the message I put on the rtc. I'm not the only supporter, but some people like me were just very salty of the comments and so, I need some days and maybe a week to cool down and rationally think of what I'm going to do with this. It's clear for me that this thread is the only place I can trust, but it has activities issues which I believe it doesn't take a genius to know why. Reddit and tumblr has a much better potential. It just makes me wonder why I'm putting so much work on SB.

But you are included, only a few people isn't and now I think you get why I simply did not wanted to rate, it would never matter to anyone who don;t care enough. Fun fact, that's why @ Rockaphin Rockaphin abstained on the chance rating.....I actually have that person on skype and we pretty much both were salty and didn't wanted to rate for the same reasons.

I just have come to the realisation that most speculators from yesterday and prbably a lot who didn't rate simply don't care much. He has been historically the msot underrated character ever, I have yet to see someone who is more underrated than him, as I said, it's not new, but the intensity of how it happened is.

Sorry to say this, but I wasn't willing to talk about this anyway, I only do because you asked.

Hmm, my bad, perhaps I should have said that they aren't necessarily equal . They have some things in common, but also a lot of differences.

When I meant equal, I meant they are both mario, that's just it. The characters are equal, but their subset isn't. It's exactly like dr mario.

Just for curiosity, did you read the Iwata ask? The following link is mainly why a lot of people hate sticker star:

http://iwataasks.nintendo.com/interviews/#/3ds/papermario/0/2

Because your thing is far from silly, IS never wanted ss to happen the way it happened, Myamoto is why it happened, but for unknown reasons. Even if you claim diversity, we just got some with spm....it wouldn't make sense. The key point is that, the club nintendo survey about the spm story and the willing to only use smw characters.

Sum it up, it's a huge communication issue. I don't think the game would've happened if it wasn't for that issue because now, I see a much better communication now even for this particular series. This is why I'm beginning to be more optimistic, but still worried.

Oh no not this again, the stage makes sense to be repped that way because 3ds. What you should be shocked is to see a third of TTYD because it shouldn't even be there. It's honestly expected to see ss on 3ds, but TTYD is not. In fact, remember this, there's no stage on WiiU, that's where your repping idea would come (but please, consider the theater....).

idk, but I honestly saw no reasons to be worried at the stage. That argument is actually very old and I think most got it....

He's honestly more likely than all those you mentioned but that is again, quite explained on the rtc message I made yesterday. You just don't discard such a big potential with these reasons because it worth so much that you really need good reasosn and the only one I found was the latest game not being well received and even then, I have a counter to say that nintyendo just seems to acknowledge it less.

He's BY DEFINITION fancy, are you crazy? Seriously, if you look at the OP material, it's already fancy :) . That's also from his subset btw, everything is pretty much fancy (except the seagull in pm64).

As for the list guys, it will take a while. The rtc also revealed that some are to be removed of it due to a very low want rating. Someone even mentioned that he used to support, but doesn't now. I have to clean the list.

It's a shame that the story of SS was just "Mario plot number 3456+1" just because of the story of SPM was low rated by person who doesn't know how the story of SPM was amazing.(At least better that "Mario plot 3456+1)

btw, idk if you were on the list, but since I'm rather busy with that list, are you in or you're just neutral?

I think i'm just neutral. If Paper Mario become a character playable, i think i will be happy, but if not, i think i will be just "OK, maybe next time".

So, a buddy and I are playing through Paper Mario on the Wii U and I have to say that there's some badges that you can obtain early that are pretty OP. In this play-through, I've been mostly raising my BP stat because I'm constantly finding new badges that are g0dliek.

Oh and props to one of the coolest partners ever who brought one of the best and most enjoyable features to Paper Mario:

I love delivering mail all over the map! And his design looks cool.

Agree that SPM is a bit underrated. At first I was disdainful towards the platform/RPG mix, but over time I began to accept it. The game had pleasing visuals, music, characters, and gameplay. The Pixels were pretty cool; Carrie was OP and Slim had the best personality in my opinion. Did anyone else stay in the hallway before the fight with King Croacus to read the term summaries under each painting of the former Florosapien leaders? Anyone have a favorite king/queen? King Croacus III sounded like a pretty cool leader, even though he didn't (couldn't) do much; he was basically the Floro Kingdom's William Henry Harrison. Wish I could read Ice Rose.

Honestly, Chapter 6 in SPM is a contender for having the greatest depth and the most heartrending story. It was this chapter that inspired me to always make it a priority to thoroughly analyze and assess both sides in a conflict. My only complaints about it were the Muths. Could barely kill those things, and when I did, I took way too much damage.

Also agree with Rockaphin that Parakarry is a cool partner, my second favorite personally after Kooper. Anyone know if Parakarry had a defense of 1 like Kooper did? When Parakarry was by my side he rarely got attacked, and when he did I didn't pay attention to the damage he took.

EDIT: Chapter 5 in SPM, my bad lol

So, I hvae been very inactive lately everywhere because I was playing pm64 (and another game which....might shock you) as well as the rtc salt didn't helped, I'm fine now, but I think I might just not go in character forums....I think it'll be better that way.

i haven`t told you this, but I just realised I was loving parakarry. He's just the msot usefull because you can hit pretty much most enemies and I love the kick. Also, bringing foes out by litterally carying them is silly :)

He's even usefull with the letters outside of battles, I basically had him always out :)

I jsut love parakarry :)

ok, lots of stuff to say.

Yes I did stayed in the hallway and I found the whole thing very silly. I don't remember exactly the text, but it was like a very funny representation of king and politics, lol. So, I don't know my favorite text of these :)

.....are you sure we're talking about the same ch6? Like, there's no muth in ch6....it's only sammer guy and a bit of underwhere. Btw, what do you mean annoying? Just hammer :)

euh.....pm64 partners has a shared HP with you, it's weird, but if he takes one damage (which is not common for any partners), you take 1 damage, but you always have him injured. Yeah, the partners system in pm64 is rudimentary....

One thing I learned of my playthrough is the bp limit of 30 and I just want to write about this because imo, it might improve the gameplay.

Having a bp limits forces you to really think of your badges setup every time. i found the strategy to be a bit more challenging here as it costed more to have my dear flower saver (I lvoe this badge so much). In that regard, TTYD might have been interesting with that limit.

Now, here's a shocking reveal, I bough this:

So, first, please, diggest this without hating me for paying 35$ for that game second hand.

Now, let me explain why I did this:

I was just very tired of not being able to review this game in a constructive manner. I really was annoyed to always uses the Iwata ask and the what I heard from people....it's just not concrete enough. I still hat ethe game, don't get me wrong, but I never knew the real results, only roguhly and why they happened.

And now, this picture was possible:

:)

This is the only series I fully own physical....it's rare for me to go physical nowadays.

Now, I beat the world 2 and really, I will do a kinda long version, but not complete of my stance so far.

I got that the game broke more standards than I thought. WHY THE JUMP SFX IS SMW!!!! Really, that was very sad but the hammer.....oh geez, how they manage to screw that awesome bashing sfx to a little knock on a table is beyond me. The tittle screen....felt bland and so far, very unimpressed with the music (coming from someone who loved mk8 and sm3dworld jazz style, SS does it poorly).

Now, there's ONE good thing, the overall worlds (not ch :( ) design. I found interesting the superposition and thin layers of papers forming the worlds and made it so fragile that it gives good hammer interactions sometime I could say doesn't have much in previous games.

The problem is how lacking the diversity is.....I really don't think we are reaching a level when I could say it was tried to be diverse. The only thing that changes mostly is the color scheme....not much.

And let's get to the core, the battles....euh....they probably broke everything.

Look, I have not 2 but 3 different perspective of this game. 1: as Paper Mario game, 2: as an RPG not neccessarily as a Paper Mario game and 3: just a game.

The battle made and the lack of several standards made the 1 just suck, but also affects badly the 2. See, normally, in an rpg, the role part of the character is what is immersed into you. it's more emotionally based than simpyl trying to phisically immerses you. What I mean by this is if you play earthbound, you FEEL Ness, you don't really feel you're Ness, you're just feeling him and his surrounding. This is the thing that RPG excells at doing.

These battles just DO NOT in EVERY SINGLE way try to emotionally immerses you into everyone. Not even the usual expereinces you would get by working with battles, it's just not there. What this means is the battles has the only pros of giving you coins and stickers, but because it's already the whole point of the game....it jsut contribute to infinite gathering which just in no way makes you feel you did something meaningfull. But the worst is that the run is acting exactly like beating an enemy if it's the case. Because doing a battle in itself is a risk of game over evey time, there's basically NO REASONS to do them other than to just watch and pass the time or just trigger them to run after since you might just want to clean the map.

Now, first, why the heck they choose turn by turn for this system is time wasting, but they lack any strategy other than having stickers. The bosses are indeed the best examples, there's no strategy. You have it, or you don't, you can't like almost have it and die....

Now, Paper Mario game? shut down immediately, it's VERY clear to me that this games feels not even close to the series. But also not close to being just an RPG which the game is ADVERTISED to be one!

Look, this is ridiculous. You have to BOTH discard the series AND the genre to possibly like this game. It's jsut hardly likeable and even worst, there's evidences that this game was rushed. the vareity lacking and I even saw some seam of textures not being attached properly....it's that rushed.

So, what this game is exactly?

As weird as it sounds, it seems very close to the zelda series. It's more like an adventure game with dungeons and puzzles when the battles are present BUT NOT THE MAIN POINT. They are just there to make your life harder in a good way (talking zelda here) and also because the adventure genre is not the same immersion as the rpg one. Look, the name "link" is quite clear, what is immersed is the bound you have between you and the game world, not the characters. By enforcing that link, it just have a whole new set of philosophies that are really awesome on their own....

but not in the Paper Mario series. That series is just missmatching this as when you play any games in the first 3, you never believe you're in the game and its colorfull design, but you FELT it. The design is really why this series got it in such a distinctive way, you feel in an imaginairy world of paper and the variety in the chapters made you felt even more the variety of it. Not to mention the happiness you live :)

Now SS broke most of that distinctive design except the worlds design. But the battles and the way you solve puzzles by pretty much only using items....this is EXACTLY like zelda, but just imagine every items you get aren't permanent while you can get a lot of them. This is sticker star. This is really not an rpg, but by this, it is also not really a Paper Mario game as far as the series standard is concerned.

Which is why I would say that if you discard botht he series and the rpg genre, you might like it average (which is bad in my book). it still does have a consistency with the adventure genre except that it's far from detailed and the turn by turn battle doesn't make sense.

As for what the game is advertised, it's just bad. You can't like this game expecting an rpg or a Paper Mario game because it jsut doesn't fit at all.

Now I have to say this, ssb4 did a fantastic job with the stage. They ONLY kept the worlds design which I found interesting and the music even got improved to feel much more Paper Mario related and varied. Fun fact, the TTYD segment water is from SS, idk they merged both games.

This lead me to think that no one should be worried of his repping in SS. So far, they only kept the good of it.....I don't see much reasons to be worried because even then, if they took the time to make that TTYD and pm64 stuff int he stage, I don't believe we should be worried they would skip these games.

Now, I don't expect much changes and I'm doing world 3, I'll do my huge and exhaustive review after I beat the game (this was of course not the full version :) ).

It took almost everything the 1st 2 Paper Mario games were, threw it on the ground, and spat on it.
Super Paper Mario crushed me. I love the real Paper Mario Games. When I found out one was coming to the wii, I was so excited. I wondered "What new partners will be included?", "What kind of new battle mechanics will be incorporated? "Maybe you'll be able to have 2 partners out at once!".
It was a good thing i used a free rental coupon. The beutiful battle system was gone, and the prtners were stupid batches of squares, not awesome takes on classic minions, as I have come to expect.
I hated it immediately.

I agree entirely.
Wow. I think Nintendo's idea to TRY SOMETHING NEW was phenomenal. If they had released "Paper Mario: TTYD 2", I would've cried...because the series would've evolved into just another COD.

I appreciated Paper Mario: SS. I liked the new direction that they take the games in.
My favorite is TTYD, but I think that Paper Mario: SS really focused on the "handheld" portion of Nintendo.

first, please, avoid double posting.....you can get infractions for this.

Second, you're unfortunately one of a few that said this. I really think spm is underrated for the same reasons because i'm going to be honest, it wasn't worth to make a TTYD sequel. TTYD is just too close to the best polished way of Paper Mario. They pretty much had to renew it, and spm did it right. The story and many elements of spm made me think that this game deserves way more love cause it clearly blong in the series. There's so much contrivutions this game made, it is as Paper Mario as TTYD and pm64 is.

SS however....that, I can't come to this conclusion. The Iwata ask alone was quite clear that they simply didn't intended the same they were going for thew whole series DUE TO A COMMINUCATION ISSUE. In other words, this game should have never went the way it went and even IS never wanted, it is hard to believe that in the end, this game deserves the Paper Mario title. Also, they actually did asked on social media on people oipinions on their favorite games and basically TTYD > pm64 >>> spm (unfortunately....) >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> SS. Most hated SS and honestly, for very legitimate reasons.

ok here's the real thing: it's not really a direction they really wanted to went into. Look, Myamoto may have not wanted the first 2 games gameplay because of diversity, but because spm happened, it doesn't make sense that the series wasn'T that diverse. What should have happened is they would readjust spm with either a renew or going back to root, both were doable.

It didn't happened because it broke almost everything the series got in first 3 games. Spm relatively broke almost nothing....spm is just a renew of what was done.....

Not to mention there's several evidences this game WAS rushed.

I wonder if you were aware of the chain chomp....that is the best example that SS really shouldn't have went the way it went and IS knew it.

I bet you that if they announce a new game, they pretty much have to go back to root....I think it was clear that they should have got the message that they should reconsider what was made with SS....

I could go in depth, but I repeated the same sppech like 15 times so....this is just the short version....

but I feel if they had more time, they could've developed SS into something better, while still not "going back to the roots".

All in all, I feel that EVERY Paper Mario game is worth playing.

All in all, I feel that EVERY Paper Mario game is worth playing.
....not SS if you care about the series....honestly, I actually only am playing it to get the concrete lost of the series. If I was purely judging the value, considerin ghow much I care about the series, it doesn't worth much....especially if you played spm....

Now, I know that SS is sad....the problem is that if IS judged good to try to somehow going back to root while they pretty much HAD to use the 3ds (the WiiU wasn't released and spm was 2007), than there was absolutely nothing wrong eith going back to root because this isn't after TTYD, this was after spm which really contributed to the variety. They could have simply got back to root, but implement spm pros. That is what I would call a good sequel because spm had its flaws and they were more obvious than TTYD, but overall, spm had so much unique stuff that they overshadowed these cons. So, if SS was a back to root, but with different gameplay strategies.....then this would`ve been good.

Now, the problem is that first, it wasn't THAT neccessary to be back to root. If Myamoto just said to don't do it, that would have ALONE be fine.

The thing is it was impossible to have SS be good in any way. First, they were convinced people didn't care about spm story, it's quite false, most who loved spm loved the story. That was from club nintendo and I don't think it's coincidence that it shut down....

Second, Myamoto said use only smw characters, no OC. WHY? You loose almost every originality the series gained....there's a clear communication error here.

And lastly, the reasons the partners was dropped is because the game simply was not matching with them. At least they were consistent to do it, but the truth is the whole sticker thing, the whole gameplay is the major problem. It's not even contributing to an rpg environement, how can it contribute to the series if the series is an rpg made in a distinctive design?

Cause the design, it has it. I actually love the design philosophies of the environment of SS, but the variety gosh, it's so lacking.

Look, here's why it was rushed, the whole project shift. Wenting from back to root to something completely different made IS on a rush. I honestly think they didn't wanted to do this, but nintendo is boss, IS are just the devs here. It's not surprising why this game took so long to release....

So, here's what would have contributed to make SS awesome:

  • Nintendo should have been aware why people loved the series. spm story being the most praised, they should have continued to maintain the writting quality.
  • Nintendo should have been aware of the praise of the first 2 games because spm did got some flac with its gameplay. it's still genius imo, but the fact that most didn't liked the platforming part is a sign that your product had some flaws and you should learn about them. I think that gameplay can be improved....if time is put into.
  • They should consider spm to have been a contribution to the variety. Therefore, it wasn't neccessary to break everything of the series, I would love the series to die instead of this happening.....
  • They should let IS. Seriously, imo, if IS did what they wanted, SS would have been awesome.
So, does it mean that they could have made an awesome game without going back to root and do something like spm, but differently? Absolutely. Does it required it? No. So, is SS should have went the way it went? No.

SS is simply not an rpg. If you have a game that is not even close to the genre of the series, it's almost as if SS isn't Paper Mario....

Also, I actually checked sales data and from what i got, the demand since spm pretty much was maintained, SS got a slight increase. Around 4-5% of console owners owned spm, pm64 and SS for their systems. TTYD is surprisingly 7%....it was end of life, that tells you how much this game got.

What this means is CURRENTLY, they have every reasons in the world to do a back to root. After it's done, they can do whatever they want, but I hate the spm hate while the true failure is SS.....spm by any way I see it is nopthing compared to SS....the former is loveable and the later is hardly consirable in the series.....

I think every Paper Mario except SS, bring something they make each one special, i explain...:

Paper Mario : The start of the franchise, the code of the series, simple story but still different from the normal Mario game, cool partner, good soundtrack, good humor,a classic.

Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door: EXPAND the gameplay in every way, new places, a story really different from the Mario game and keep become higher and higher, complex backstory for certain character, good difficulty, GREAT soundtrack, really funny, a beautiful game.

Super Paper Mario: different gameplay from the other episode but still have RPG mechanic, again new places, one of the darkness and sadness story of all Mario Game, a humor different but really great who parodie Classic RPG and geek culture, easy for newcomer, a beautiful soundtrack, the strangest episode but the most unique.

Sticker Star? no character, no story, gameplay boring and difficulty too easy or too hard. The only good point is the music but still too forgettable for a Paper Mario.

....I'll be more specific:

pm64: how slow paced it is. Seriously, this is by far the smoothest game of the series. MOST of the music and graphics are so calm. They really went with something that you would just take the longest time ever because you would jsut want to appreciate the design slowly. smrpg stuff are pretty much engraved in the series (of course, SS broke it....spm played it with a bit, but not enough to break it). However, the concept itself is just awesome, it had limitations. The battles were qwuite rudimentary and the animations could have been better. I mostly blame the limitations of the system because if I consider the system, this is an awesome game that is really genius in trying to live with these limitations....and is actually sources of lots of glitches :)

TTYD: this is just the core of the series. There's no way to put it better. It's LITTERALLY pm64, but the msot polished way possible. EVERYTHING has become standards, look, the font was kept from this game to SS....and many others, but a lot was lost in SS. The major thing of the game? YOU CANNOT BE MAD WHILE PLAYING IT!!!! Seriously, you can't, the design is just too colorful, the music are so much memorable with the retro design (lost with SS) and the FREAKING BATTLES! This is THE ONLY rpg I played that I WANTED to do repetitives battles because they were so much cheerful....you`re a lier if you claim you didn't do stylish! while your sp were full.....I don't think the series can top this game, but it surely can renew it and maintain it....

Spm:`THE underrated game. spm has an unique cubic design (which is heavilly inspired from TTYD), it has the deepest plot ever (imagine TEC x100) and the music style is....well, the same! However, the retro style is even more obvious making the music even more memorable....As for the gameplay, it's genius. I suck at 2d mario platformer and I loved this game because this game is not a platformer, it is not an rpg, it's both. One cannot live without the other because the bound between them are so strong that it jsut still feels Paper mario with its design and you still feel it. This is not TTYD 2 because why fix what worked so well? You don't, you renew what worked because this is art, you're trying to explore new possibilities and nintendo loves to do it.

SS: I'm just going to list whjat had ptential and was kept because everything else was lost. The colorfull design, the font, the animations....somehow and some very tiny refferences. That's....all.

The music is just lacking in diversity. Guys, mk8 adn sm3dworld is awesome music, but not SS. SS has no fitting and again, no retro design. I am severely unimpressed by the music so far, but I did listened the whole ost in wav beforehand....it didn't changed my view. the sfx just aren't the feel you get from first 3 games. Even spm had an awesome and satisfying jump sfx. The hammer is not worth mentioning and the story is....euh, there's none. I thought we passed the age of pm64 being the classic mario plot, but a lot of stuff int he ch, spm heck, you play as bowser....SS is just worse than pm64....that is throwing away 11 years of story evolutions. The gameplay doesn't represent rpg, but more as a zelda game....that has lots of missmatches. Lots of rush evidences such as several logistic errors that you almost have to use the internet to not waste hours for something you couldn't have gotten, kersti is not even close to tattles, the only collecting is the sticker museum, which IS IN ITSELF AWESOME, the problem is you do them with stickers....which you might be tired to get in the game.

Look, it's not deserving to be a Paper Mario game and not even an rpg, just a game. It's ridiculous how this game is hardly likeable because believe it or not, it CAN be liked for the colorfull design slone....you just have to be EXTREMELY open minded and I'm the opposite of this. The beat is SS is good average as just a game, but in my standards, average is bad. I praise innovations, not repetitions and SS with its lack in variety is repetitions.....

Btw, this is why I love the ssb4 stage....it's everything good about SS that was kept and people should be thanful for it instead of complaining it has 2 SS sections.....

My 2 cents....

I think you explain better than me on certain point. But like i say, every Paper Mario except SS are different BUT in a good way. Sticker Star trying too hard to be like " I have RPG Classic battle!! LOVE ME PLEASE!!!" but it just fail at every good point that the Paper Mario series have! It's such a freaking shame and this is why i hate every person who say SPM was **** because it was different. And then in fact, they created the WORST Paper Mario ever created. Screw this guy...

.....hum....I guess I should redo my speech, but....Myamoto isn't neccessarily to be blamed badly.

Let me just explain, SS being rushed, it kinda make sense if you think about it that it went that way. In fact, if I was only reviewing the consistency, SS is consistent because it's clear what IS had in mind while they made the game, it's consistent also in the way they did it.

So, being advertised as rpg....it's not really something they could avoid. I know, it's not an rpg, but it was so rushed that they kind had to scrap most of it and still keep turn by turn. However, I will say this, there was no reasons to do turn by turn....real time would fit way better, but even then, there's still no points to do them so EVEN if they went real time, it's still far form an rpg. So, the turn by turn battle advertisement, there's nothing wrong, it's the missmatch between the rpg philosophies and the flow of battles of SS that is the problem. Remember, this was intended to be a back to root....

Ok, let me repeat the key point of the Iwata ask, Myamoto is not neccessarily an evil guy here (you can't actually prove it if you tried).

First, IS present a prototype of a back to root game which Myamoto "for some reasons" felt it wasn't right.

That's all we know, we never knew why which is why I can't come to the conclusion that I hate him. You don't know why and idk, the only thing I can say is if it was for more diversity, it would be redundant since spm just did that. My best guess is that he didn't understood the merit of the first 3 games....the reasons is supported by the others key points of that interview.

Next, the club nintendo survey. This is out of the control of Myamoto, but that survey you know it, but think about it. If we know the result of it are inaccurate, the survey is the only thing that could have went wrong. And that's the problem, would people just do the survey to rush them and get the coins? Also, at this time, nintendo was very inactive on social medias where a lot of nintendo fans were probably active. This just points that the survey data being accurate is because of the communication not being strong enough between nintendo and its fans. it's not new, check metroid other m, apparently, it went through similar issues that strangely feels similar to what happened with SS. It's pure communication issues, we wanted something that nintendo didn't know we wanted. You can't put the blame on myamoto for this, in fact, his decisions is even more consistent because if you have in mind people didn't care about the story of spm, why even try? Seriously, nintendo has an audience and they try to please this audiences because int eh end, nintendo tries to make money. If their survey tells people don't care about spm story than why would you evcen bother to try to have a deep story and focus the effort on soemthing that people seemingly care more?

it's just logicall. The rest is just consistency, being smw stuff with no OC is again, probably due to this same communication issue. then it rushed, IS did the stickers ideas, but the partners didn't matched.

I see so far no reasons to hate Myamoto if the biggest issues was nintendo not communicating enough. Look, do you follow what they do lately? THEY FREAKING ASKED US ON SOCIAL MEDIAS!!!! Look how much communication there's with the directs, ssb4 and everything. It's clear now that they should be aware of the situation, they shut down club nintendo.....

Do you get this point? I don't want that you run and hate Myamoto because in the end, his decisions were quite justified well.

Oh, i don't hate Myamoto, even if certain of his choice make me perplex over ther year. I don't think this is only his fault but more of certain detractor of SPM who just wanted that this never existed, like this was the Black Ship of the series.
(Even tough that SS will be what they saying as the true Black Ship of the franchises.)

....even there, I wouldn't call it an issue.

look, if this game was praised a lot for its story....but hated for its real time gameplay....

Then nintendo would be smart and ge "Oh, this means that we should try to readjust the battle gameplay while still mainting the story style".

You get this right?

But what we got is not this. What we got is that it's like we told nintendo that "almost none of us care about the story", then i expect nintendo to just say "well, fine, screw the story".

It's not us, we know there's quite a substantial minority that even preffered spm. Btw, the same thing happened when they asked, they of course was minority, but Nintendo trying to caters to mostly everyone, I don't think they would intentionally ignore this minority.

So, I still think spm is underrated, but to me, spm does have more flaws than TTYD so here, it's just normal that it's less liked and it's just normal to see more hate. it's not really legitimate, I know, but you ahve to get that TTYD itself didn't helped....this was so polished that it made the expectation jump a lot higher.

And anyway, you also have to get that the people who claim to hate spm....they are included with the people that hate SS (I never saw someone hating spm but loved SS....in my expereince, if you hate spm, you hate SS).

So, I wouldn't even blame those who hated spm, what they are telling is if spm had less flaws and had a different way of renewing TTYD, then it would be more loved. If people reveals flaws, that's a good thing to try to pay attention to them, but nintendo had the wrong data....they can't correct what they didn't know....

SPM are for sur is fault (really easy, camera in 3d kinda bad, the game in kinda slow on the beginning, alot of cutscene etc) but every game as is fault and his just botter me that some fan say that PM 2 is God and has no fault and that SPM is the worst game in the series. I seriously see people like that ,maybe not like i said it, but really close. But hey.. everyone has his opinions:shyguy:. Also this is my last message for me, i have to go to bed so... Good Night/Day.

The elegant battlefield.
*sigh* People rate Paper Mario, and see him as a 3rd Mario. However, when rating Midna and Wolf Link, they hardly mention a 3rd Link. Why? Is it a "Mario vs. Zelda" thing? Look, I like the Zelda series and all, but this kind of bias... it just hurts.

So i was researching some fanart of SPM (because even is the game is not that loved compared to the two first PM, he has still a good number of fan for him.). And then i found this:

Man, when i saw this image, i can't say anything other that this Fanart make me very happy and very sad. The first his because of the picture himself : the character are so different but still loveables and see this picture make me realise even more that before. But i'm also sad because will problably never see this character in a Mario game (except maybe in cameo) and that's make really hurt inside.

ATTENTION: read this post for an exhaustive Sticker Star review :)

SPM are for sur his fault (really easy, camera in 3d kinda bad, the game in kinda slow on the beginning, alot of cutscene etc) but every game as his fault and his just botter me that some fan say that PM 2 is God and has no fault and that SPM is the worst game in the series. I seriously see people like that ,maybe not like i said it, but really close. But hey.. everyone has his opinions:shyguy:. Also this is my last message for me, i have to go to bed so... Good Night/Day.
...I really am trying to get what you mean but I think you have some English errors because "his" isn't used properly.....maybe pm me what you meant in French?

Because I also misunderstood your other post....although, I saw tons of fanart in tumblr, some are spm related and they are good :)

But i'm also sad because will problably never see this character in a Mario game (except maybe in cameo) and that's make really hurt inside.

art and drawing are good you at least were close enough to the real color :)

*sigh* People rate Paper Mario, and see him as a 3rd Mario. However, when rating Midna and Wolf Link, they hardly mention a 3rd Link. Why? Is it a "Mario vs. Zelda" thing? Look, I like the Zelda series and all, but this kind of bias... it just hurts.
can we make this clear? I really don't want to come back to characters forums except this very support thread because of what rtc made me realise on the speculators here. You really should not be surprised, the broken repping logic implies a lot more than what you might think like I said, this isn't new, the intensity is however.

So, basically ignore the thread because it didn't changed a year ago....I tell you.

Now, here's the big thing: I beat sticker star 100%, all super flags, museum completed and every luigis.

Now, I have A LOT to say about this game but a few tthigns to say before:
  • This is exhaustive, this is the type of text that if I forgot to talk about ANYTHING, I would be mad at myself so, it's going to be really long, but the most accurate I can.
  • This is not trying to avoid spoilers, I will spoil the entire game, BEWARE EVEN IF I STILL DON'T RECOMMEND PLAYING IT!
  • I came to the realisation after I beat the game that the 3ds system has a poor sound card. This is not a game problem, but a system problem. Luckily, I had ripped wav on my pc and they were 10x times better than what is outputed by the system. This applies for both the speakers and headphones, but I used headphones entirely.
  • It's going to have some definitions at the beginning because I have so much to say and this game breaking a lot of concepts that I have to make clear what I'm talking about as some of these concepts applies to every game in general.
With that in mind, let's do this!

Let me define some concepts before diving into booting the game.
  • game flow logistics (or just logistic in this review): The planning of the game flow. Basically, it is the organisation aspect of how the game flows with the player. For example, in a zelda game, it is a good logistic to have jars with hearts inside right before a boss as you would be sure that the probability the player would need them are high. A good logistic makes the experience less frustrating and the game gives you enough chances to do it on your own without external resources like the internet while bad one makes you use the internet and can lead to some frustration to to the design choices.
  • Paper Mario series standards: Everything that has been established in the series in design since either TTYD or pm64. Spm only renewed the same standards and didn't defined much. For example, the font has been established since TTYD, it is then a standard. Note: these are abstraction, they aren't concrete sometime like having 8 chapters is not concrete, the chapters can be anything. Some standards can have a strong or weak dependencies on the series as you get close to its core.
  • Paper Mario series core: How we define the series. I will use the following: "Paper Mario is the representation of the universe of Mario in paper and with its RPG structure, it makes you feel into this world of paper and with its simplicity, it tries to make you happy". What this means is that any games that respects this definition is considered deserving the tittle Paper Mario. Note: the core is opinion based, but I better define mine instead of not knowing what I'm talking about.
  • RPG: stands for role playing game in the way that instead of trying to immerse you into the world of the game, it tries to immerse you into the role of the characters. In Paper Mario case, the role of being mario in paper is what is immersed here. Although, just being immersed into a role is an RPG. The immersion is rather psychological as it makes you FEEL the role of the characters.
There, so, if you disagree in any of these, you will probably disagree to some points of my review, but you still might want to read it if you agreed to some of them.

Before starting the file

So, this is the first time int he series where the intro is AFTER the tittle screen which....doesn't do much tbh. What is weird however is the tittle screen.....it just feels bland. I mean, it's the first that has animations, but it's just Paper Mario doing stuff and with stickers in the background. I guess they went for a bit too much simplicity here. Also, you have 3 files instead of 4, but the probability that you'll use all of 3 are quite low.....Lastly, the tittle theme is quite bland again, I really don't feel it's going anywhere and overall, from the series standards, it gives a not so good impression on the game.

From intro to world map

So, the one thing that struck me is thanks to my magnifying glasses I could manage to read the text....it was quite small for my eyes. Anyway, the intro is quite....too simple. The one thing I will praise is having a book and starting the game with "Ahem! today" because these are long stayed standards. The plot of this game being quite too simplistic, the intro suffers a lot. I don't necessarily want to play the game more while watching the intro.

As for the sticker fest cutscene (aka, cs int his review), it's pretty much like everything I saw....it's just exactly like any Paper Mario game except Boweser touch something before kinapping Peach. I will be honest here, the pm64 was WAYYYYYYYYYYY better just because of the immersion done with the battle.....except that this game couldn't do this...more on the progression system later.

Now, we finally have input control and it's pretty much what you would except, but some changes. The jump sound effect (aka sfx in this review) is not really what I would expect. The smw sfx for me removes all the joyful Paper Mario had since pm64.....I understand that Charles Martinet isn't necessary, but the sfx could have been MUCH better. The text bubble is fine.....but almost every good text effects is cut. <shake>, <dynamic> (huge potential for the 3d effect lost here) and <wave>. The ones that are kept are <scale>, <wait> and <speed>. I really don't get why they cut something that made the text so much vivid, but I was a bit disappointed by this. As for Kersti, I grew to hate her in the game, but this is the main complain i have, she's almost to the point of hating you.....I mean it. She's convinced you touched the comet and she's even convinced you are falsely accusing Bowser.....I get the humor potential, but the fact that she did this again in the game and other evidences that i came across later makes the jokes not work and you basically grow to really not like her. This is the only original character of the game....that's a disappointment. Also, she acts as a map only tattlers, but it became obvious how useless she was.

The hammer has the cool thing to allow vertical control, but the sfx....urgh. i can't get how we went from a satisfying bashing sfx to a mere knock on the floor with your fist. I seriously am very disappointed of this sfx, it could have bee so much better. Now, the other cool thing with the hammer is there's way more hammer interaction, something I actually think was needed, but the problem is the sfx removes this charms and I'll get to this later, but the worlds lack in diversity. Overall, it really doesn't try to make me happy....it's more bland than anything.....

As for saving the toads, well I guess the world interaction are fun, but the text is not. Throughout the whole game, the texts tries to remind you that this is a paper world. The problem being that the series NEVER tried to explicitly state it and that's for a simple reasons: you already feel it. Just by looking at the screen would anyway make this effects because of how thin the papers are made and how clear the segments are. It is already clear that every maps feels like a DIY, but explicitly stating it cut most of its charms as it s very obvious that the text should have went into something MUCH more pertinent.....it basically tells nothing new. Again, I get the humor potential, but it's just not the humor the series used to have. I could accept some references here and there, but not the whole text....that is something problematic.

And we finally are at Decalbourg which makes me wonder why decal? I have yet to know, but the point is, I wonder if it's a reference to Petalbourg. Anyway, I guess it's fine and colorful, but it suffers from the world map design because it's just not the same hub feel. In fact, it's not a hub. If you're going to try to make a hub, make an actually hub, this doesn't make sense for this to be like a hub when it's not..... There's just some reasons you would be there, things, shops and museum....some exceptions, but mostly these are the reasons you would be there. Which....is fine I guess. Now, for the first goomba battle, I realised that the sfx could have honestly been way better, the action command one made me miss the TTYD sfx.....at least they kept the dying one. I didn't get the progression feel sicne it was too brief, but the world 1 was enough.

Last point, so far, the music failed to carry me.

And I get to the world map...

Core gameplay (worlds reviews comes after)

So, let me make this point straight: the design of the worlds and the way paper is used is just awesome. It is clearly making me feel in the world of paper and is so much colorful. This is when I praise the improved hammer interaction because it successfully achieves what the series excels at. As for the stickers....well, let me define why the core gameplay, the most important part of any game overshadows any goodness I could get.....

It is dependent on the stickers you have. You do good if your stickers are good and you do bad if your stickers are bad. it even goes like you will enjoy this game a lot if your album is full, but you CANNOT do anything if you have no stickers other than the run button. Which is why there's so much stickers in the world, if you don't get them, you're stuck and I mean literally you are stuck to hit run. Even if they really try to make the logistic to have your album filled most of the time, there's a huge contradiction: there's absolutely no progress in every battle EXCEPT the bosses and mini bosses/special enemies as the only reason they make you progress is because they are REQUIRED.

Let me explain, the only thing you gain from winning a battle is stickers, coins and sometimes, hearts to heal you. That's it, there's no progression here because the stickers are infinite gathering, they even respawn if you left a world. Now, this would normally be fine except that because one of the condition to game over is to have 0 hp, every battle is a potential risk to game over meaning that because the battles makes you waste stickers making this risk even bigger, THERE'S ABSOLUTELY NO LOGICAL POINTS TO DO ANY BATTLE IN THE GAME UNLESS IT'S REQUIRED!!!!!

In fact, the way the game reflects progression is not by you progressing, but it's purely by the logistic, it's like the game gives you more powerful stuff depending on how far you are, but you as the character never progressed. In the end, the run button despite being completely random (it does become harder to use if you use it a lot, but it's 50/50, you can or you can;t) is going to become your favorite feature of the battle system.

And that is the whole problem, it's anti RPG. You can't get immersed into the role of the characters if he makes absolutely no progress. This is why RPG have been notorious for having an experience system, it's to force you to think, take critical decisions and use the run moderately. Normally, if you keep running, you will have a harder time than usual later but you can't blame the game as YOU choose to run, not the game. By having this constant logic, you become one with your character because you start to feel the battle.

And there's even a bigger problem, breaking the RPG genre is implying to break the Paper Mario series core. The core has a direct dependency to the RPG structure as it's used to make you feel into a papery world in its characters, without it, the core cannot be achieved. You can't feel in the characters being paper since you basically don't progress, it's like you watch the battles instead of feeling them. Spm real time btw works differently because the RPG is merged with platformer, but it still made you feel into the world.

Which leads me to my next point: there's no reasons the battles are turn by turn. Absolutely none as the strategy is not present, you have stickers, you have options you don't you don't. Even the bosses / mini bosses has no strategy, you just need one sticker and they are dead. Turn by turn formula has the famous advantage to offer the most strategies options and the cons to be tedious in time hence why the run exists as last resort. This game having no strategies, it only has the cons making you want to use the run. I think it would make way more sense to have real time formula has the game will benefit from the pros without suffering much from the cons, but the problem is even there, it's not fixing how broken the RPG structure got. You still will be a bit tempted to run, except it will feel less frustrating since it would be quicker to beat the enemy and good luck trying to fit real time with how the stickers are used....it just doesn't match.

Overall, this is not an RPG. What I realized eventually is this is closer to an adventure game like zelda because here, the battles are real time as you use your own items you got and the puzzles you do are just interactions with your items in the environment, clearly comparable to the paperisation of Sticker Star. Now, the one thing that doesn't match with zelda gameplay is it would be like having lots of items that can only be used once instead of having permanent items that can be used many times which seriously, it doesn't make any sense. Also, the zelda games have a different philosophy because that series try to make a link between the player and the world, not the characters. It's really obvious why they named the hero "link", it's actually to say that the truth is his name is the player and roughly, you're just him in the game. That's good in itself, but this is completely miss matching the Paper Mario series core meaning that IT'S JUST MESSED UP!!!!

It's like half adventure and half something I can't identify, but they are not consistent each other. One thing is sure, this is not an RPG. There's no way it can be one because it doesn't even respect the structure. The fact that it's advertised as one is why I'm going so harsh there, it's not even unique to Paper Mario!

So, let me continue with the world review, from now on, this is going to be much faster pace because I told most of the global stuff.

World 1

The design is really good, I got my taste of green :) I actually was happy to realise that 1-4 is when the ssb4 stage was based on, that are is really colorful making this a great choice. As for the music, I would say it's good enough, but a bit too slow paced, this was fixed in ssb4 which made me think it could have been much better. I honestly saw no complain in the logistic because everything was quite clear. Even the final boss, it's actually possible to beat it without the scissors making it and I mean it, the ONLY fight that is challenging. So, please, if you want to get the only possible legit difficulty of the game, do not use the scissors, it's the only boss that is like this....unless you have infinite jump, but I'll come to it later. The battles were moderated enough (cause remember, there's no point to do them) so it became something that was enjoyable, but every joy I could get is considering it's not an rpg and not a Paper Mario game as it just has to not be these to like the game. One thing I will point out, this strangely feels like Paper Mario in the way that you have a castle dungeon type at the end and the first segment acting as hidden tutorial. The thing is, the stickers are so simple there wasn't much tutorial to do.....Other than that, I have nothing to say specifically about this world, it's your classic plain areas.

World 2

Now, this world all had one conclusion, the worlds lacks so much variety in design. That world could be really look like the first except replace the plain themed colors with a desert theme colors. Because honestly, the only thing that changed a lot is the colors scheme. There's not much that changed like it's the opposite of TTYD ch2 where you could be shocked to see the changes of Boggly Woods. This was very disappointing to lost something that made the series famous: its variety in design. As for the logistic, VERY clear, but just an advice, please, make sure you figured out the right stickers in the last level because you can easily waste you're whole album if you're not careful, though, at least Kersti here helped on the last one (more on this later, but she's not much useful after this world). The music I will agree on one thing, it's a bit more carying, but this doesn't say much. It's still way too slow in pace. I at least have to praise the instruments choices, but it's just not making it. As for the boss, this is laughable if you didn't get what you need and I think that it was somehow hard to miss, you could gave missed it however which makes me think that the logistic isn't perfect. Not much to say again, we start to see a pattern where the world are kinda bland.....

But the next world....oh geez, this one's evil.

World 3

I'm going to make this clear right away, IT SUCKS!!!! I would honestly just say this and it would be my review of the entire world.....there's SO MUCH wrong with it.....but since this is exhaustive, let me tell you the basics.

You have this paper wiggler that when leading you to his house gets kidnapped and when you go into the forest, you realise that there's lots of poisons there. Upon arriving to his house you realise that only the head is there.....the wiggler got all its 4 body segment separated and you need to bring them back. Except they are of course scattered in the world because what would be the point otherwise? Anyway, the first is quite easy to deal with and there's no problem in the logistic. My main problem with the world itself is its design, it's not colorful at all, the green is really dark and the poison is a very dark purple. Trust me, having colorful colors even for something as bad as poison is possible and makes the experience MUCH better. Btw, there's actually an insane amount of fog in the world, like so much that it's really annoying. This world is the opposite of what the series tries to do.

As for the poison itself, oh gosh, they made it the most annoying thing ever. They made most of the enemies inside the poison and I mean there's like so much that you are tired to do battles just for falling. The battles even then are annoying because you battle into a poison lake, you get damage if you wait too long.....look, you will LOVE the run button here. Also, there's so much poison that it's really frustrating to loose so much hp, thank god they at least had a decent logistic to put more heart block than usual.

But that logistic got a HUGE drop upon the second segment....

Guys, I spent hours, there's a toad that gives VERY cryptic messages that is so cryptic that you have to wonder what he's telling and he actually does try to tell you how to proceed, but it's so not clear that it still made me mess for hours until finding out online and being frustrated that it was because of poor design. The toad tells you that there's a level that used to have a bridge to access to a platform that you need to access, that would be the only way to access it, but that bridge....is gone? Not very clear, but what he tells you is that although you don;t see the bridge, there's one and there's no lack of bridge, but just nothing. The first reflex I got is to paperise, nothing and I really tried several time because paperising is used a lot. I spent HOURS, to try to figure out something, hidden platform? Secret stuff you can't see? It turned out after my desperate attempt to mess with this bridge that you actually had to go on a leafpad, let it go all the way to underneat the bridge, and jump to reveal hidden blocks, you could not get it if you were from the left side, you had to be on the leaf pad.

Question: HOW AM I SUPPOSED TO GET THAT???????

This is when I say the logistic is bad, kersti btw is so useless, all she tells is "where the second Wiggler segment is?" euh....idk, I'M FREAKING ASKING YOU THE QUESTION SO YOU COULD AT LEAST GIVE AN HINT??????

This is not even the worst thing because here, you could argue that at least the told talked about the area to look for and where in that area.

The third segment was quite not really hard to do. The spider section isn't much annoying, but that quiz is....very disappointing. Again, I get the humor potential, but it's not enough and again, it kinda not match with the series humor. Also, the questions are just boring....the music is just far from fitting. I really don't like how this is actually the most funny part of the game....appreciate it because it's the only one.....Btw, Kersti hates you for not saving her earlier.....buzz off please, you're not helping me anyway.

But the fourth....well I will admit i did went online to find it and realised it was a hidden passage that you could have get, but I was quite frustrated at this point. That one was more me than the game. Except when it runs into a woods level, that level is the same as forever forest, you have multiple paths, only one is good and you could have hidden paths. The one cool thing with the logistic is they have sign when you can put stickers for each path, good way to mark the good path. The problem is finding that wiggler segment, it's not int he main path. It is in a hidden path, but the toad really is even more confusing....he tells there's another path in the back of the front of the back of the tree.....WHAT????

so, spent hours, internet and found out that coincidentally, I went into EVERY SINGLE PATHS IN EVERY ROOM BUT THE ONE THERE WAS A HIDDEN PATH!!!! You can't say I didn't tried, i had to went into that path BEFORE to actually KNOW IT EXISTED!!!! As for the toad, he actually meant that after getting to that hidden path, there's another path behind the trees, good, BUT I WOULD LIKE TO KNOW HOW TO FIND THE FREAKING HIDDEN PATH ITSELF!!!!!

And kersti is of course not helping at all.

The frustration here was real. How the heck could anyone get it? It's even not likely because that path is the rightmost out of 3. Logically, you might want to try the leftmost one first which is the right path or maybe the center which is wrong, but the rightmost? It's likely to be the last one you want to try and the game tells NOTHING about it.....

URGH!

So, to continue, you finally put the segment back together (finally, you can go thank god now). it turns out that he got separated by kamek because the wiggler could walk over the poison and lead you to the source. So, guess what, you can now go to that island.

now that island felt....really bland. there was a very dramatic music that imo doesn't belong there. it's even too short....it's just overdoing the stuff.

BUT WAIT, IT'S NOT THE END!!!

Ok, here this was like the worst logistic error. Wel, first the boss music is bad because it's just 15 seconds that is remixed 4 times....bleh. The boss is Goopler Blooper and at one point, he will sprout poison stuff at you which will both make your attack miss at 100% and damage you just in time for him to redo the thing....cool eh?

But the second time you fight him after game over, Kersti finally decides to be usefull and tells you you need something to absorb the poison. Now, I had no such things.....

Now, here's what it required me to know, I actually ripped a lot of stuff from this game beforehand and because of this, i happened to know a sponge existed. So, I googled that and I found out it was in the very background of one level that you could have easily missed because there was just poison in it and also because it was very far back.

This is the opposite of good logistic. You normally put stuff here that are optional and secret, NOT ESSENTIAL AND REQUIRE TO BEAT THE GAME!!!!! The worst is how inconsistent that world is, because of the quiz level, they ASK you to do a special stage, so you KNOW that you can get something and how to get it, but that thing is the radiator which is required in world 4. This is a good thing because if you skip it, you know you can come back and look for it at the very least. The sponge however, it was so was to miss that if you missed it, get motivated because it could be in 12 different level that you might have missed it.....it was just not worth and I looked online. also, no, the toad and Kersti were useles....

Then you come back, the poison gets reflected at the boss which become poisoned and has the same effect, he misses everytime and he gets tons of damages. Oh and there's a joyful mario theme that plays....this is so unfitting.....

So in conclusion?

THIS WORLD IS THE DEFINITION OF WHAT THE SERIES IS NOT!!!!

Seriously, it was clear that the logistic is so poor that it had to be rushed. I honestly felt I was playing a game with a logistic from the 90's which in this case, they HAD to have a bad one because of system limitations, but this is freaking 2012.....this should not be here ESPECIALLY in a Paper Mario game which btw, DOES NOT HAVE ANY GOOD HINT SYSTEM AND IT'S THE ONLY ONE THAT DOESN'T HAVE IT!!!!!

euh.....I think this world is the proof of how needed a back to root game is, seriously, I would love to do general white hunt 50x times in a row instead of the frustration this world did to me.....

so, with this angry note, let's tackle where the game FINALLY got better and better.

World 4

I will first point out a bad logistic at the beginning. There's a big bunch of snow in the first map that you can paperise and the game makes it obvious you can (cause you arrive at dead end into it). Now, I used the radiator since it fitted into the thing and we all know any radiator can melt snow right?

NOPE!

You actually had to use a fire flower....ok, it's just the only that a battle sticker is required and must be specific (the only other time was basically any stickers worked).

But there's also an ice slope where there's a little corner in wood on its right. Now, there's nothing that tells you this is a spot for paperisation (kersti only tells you should paperise with warn stuff....good, you're not telling where however and I already think this fact was obvious....). THIS is when you had to use the radiator.....OUCH MY HEAD HURTS!!!!!

I will say, that was low, but fortunately, we passed the worst parts of the game.

Cause the rest of the world is really good, I really mean it. I have no complain on the logistic after, but that music....it's so cheerful. it's not mind blowing honestly, but it at least do the job as just a game. The design felt SLIGHTLY more varied, but it's not much. And 4-3.....I will be honest, this mansion was so fun to do. The music really has the right mood for it and the lgistic is made so that you can really explore the whole mansion and eventually find out what to do, but again, this felt more like zelda than an RPG. And I love the infitejump, but little precision: the action command are ridiculously easy which made easier to go for 100 bounces....it's not like smrpg......

Also, again, logistic details, but there was an oven that is really hard to miss given its sparkle....you don't have much chances to miss it and the thing is this is required to beat the game.

As for the lift, cool concept, but I wish the music wasn't just an smw remix.....

As for the cart ride, I really think the logistic is very clear, but again, obvious remix, please, be more varied in the music. I liked that cart part.

And the best part of the game....THIS MUSIC!!!!

I cannot tell how catchy and how fitting this is. Seriously, I didn't realised it right away because of poor 3ds sound card, but I got this into my head unconsciously and when I listened to it on my pc it was just....I had to balance my head. This music is the only one that is THAT good in the entire game, but seriously, it's almost a welcome music in the series....if only the other tracks were that good, then maybe it would be worth, but anyway, this boss music is really catchy and I will add it int he OP because this just fits in ssb.....

As for the boss, lol, you put the oven and he's dead :)

And that's it, really great world, but I still maintain it's not the best because the world 5 is better....

World 5

I think this is the best design of the game. The jungle has so much green YAY!!!! The music is quite carrying, but not as much as world 4. but I liked the volcano music too. NO LOGISTIC ERRORS!!!! ...finally. I really loved the water design of the world and the flying fish was kinda fun in variety. Oh speaking of variety, it's the only world that I judge was really varied in design. This was so good :)

One cool thing about the world is one really rare humor [pieces that FINALLY matches the series, the thrash notes. idk if you cam across them, but they are so random. I mean you really see everything you could think of and it's hilarious with how unrelated to the game it is. We got 2 TTYD references with the partners....I think IS misses them.....:(

The boss?

Just infinite jump :)

Seriously, he's just too easy, idk if you had to use a thing here :) Maybe something that crushes?

Point being, this is the best world of the game...also, no music matches the boss 4 one....that one was too good for the standards of the game :)

World 6

I know, it's just 2 levels, but I do have to say stuff about the final battle.

Well, first the bowser jr ship was fine, the music is way too slow paced though (again, thanks ssb4 for fixing it :) ).

The Bowser castle is EXACTLY the one on ssb4 without the 2 platfiorm on either side and the head doesn't move...I still wonder why they choose that part....maybe for repping purposes.

The point is, there's not much before the battle, imo, I think that part was rushed because of how brief it is. You just run into a carpet filled with holes and at the end, you just go....but the section of the carpet magically changed.....I don't get it.

You arrive, Peach is there but Bowser arrives in a very predictable manner (if you didn't expect him, idk what's wrong with you). Now, the final boss is....meh. let me detail.

There's 5 phases. The first one you need things that attack everyone because it's optimised to be impossible otherwise. The second phase, just use an eekhammer, this one is so lame. The third phase however, let me explain a lucky thing I got. I got that you had to use the refrigerator which made bowser useless, but I didn't realised that using the paper fan after made him loose a lot of damage with the bubble. I got it by pure luck.....great, bad logistic again, unless you have a lot of stickers because it's possible to pass it with jsut the refrigerator. As for the fourth phase, lame, just use the tail.....

The last phase though, wow, this is a cheap way to end a game. You can't do much to it, but Kersti realises that and decide, oh god TO BE USEFUL???? Well, a bit too much because you use her as sticker which made her forgiving you that she in the end forced you into this....again, PLEASE GO AWAY, I HATE YOU!!!! But the problem is you become so OP, you can use 5 stickers per turn and your attack power has gone up like crazy. THERE'S NO STRATEGIES LIKE THE REST OF THE GAME!!!!! The only bad thing is the fire, it can burn your stickers if you don;t block it, but the block is so easy....

And that ends the game (yeah, they didn't bother to make 8 world). it kinda goes back to where it was at the sticker fest BUT WHY KERSTI IS BACK???? I HATE HER!!!!! Anyway, the only thing to point out about this cs is that bowser tries to touch the comet again, but kersti goes berserk on him which prevents him.

Then you have a parade like pm64, James Anderson appears int he credits and you ahve a book closing,

THE END.

So, before giving a conclusion, I need to point out other stuff.

Misc and extra

The game is not based on TTYD, but more on pm64. The worlds are plain, desert, forest, ice and jungle/volcano. The only game in the series that has all of these in pm64. Also, the ending is obviously from pm64.

The museum concept is fun because you get good enough descriptions, but it points out how lacking in variety the battles stickers are....there's so much lacking of variety.

But the things I took a really long time to get it and it became obvious with their descriptions, but the whole concept of things is a huge 4th wall joke. It is like the clash of IRL world and these objects from it and the Paper world where anyone has no idea what these objects are. Like the billiard ball, they wrote that they are VERY curious on what the number on it meant. I got that this is why the unoriginal name "things" is used, it's to show how that world has no idea what their use. This became quite surprising, but I wish it was made more obvious of the joke because It took me very long. So, I actually like the things concept because it is a bit of humor that matches with the series and it also explains the weird animations and music of them.

But the rewards you get for the museum is meh. You get a sound test....euh, a PARTIAL sound test. It's only background music and it's only a few of them......WHY NO BOSS 4???? :( And the other rewards is an animation viewer of every enemies which I guess it's nice, but the catch is you're on a timer and you have to pay 1 coin for each sessions.....this is just lol, why they messed that so badly?

I used the internet for finding luigi and the +5 hearts because there was no way it was worth to check all the worlds again.....some were btw well too hidden. Same goes for some stickers that are rare or one way to get them. I also had to use it for secret doors, but not much remained as I put a lot of them.

As for the super flags.....oh gosh, I think I was insane to do it, but I spent hours of farming them. There's 4 flags that requires almost farming. spending 10k coins at shop, 1k excellent attacks (action commands), getting 500 perfect bonus (no damage for whole fight) and 50 battle spinner jackpot. I had to farm because I of course ran a lot in the game as I explained why above. I eventually got them so, I fully have the game done at 100%

Little point on the whole story, there's none, the toad and the wiggler are the only notable npc.....and even then the wiggler is generic.

Which brings me to the summation of this review.

Conclusion

It's worse than I expected. Let's be frank, it's not an RPG and it's even less deserving the tittle Paper Mario. There's clear evidences of the core gameplay being messed up in logics, the logistics of the game is poor, the music fails mostly to carry you and as well as the world, there's a severe lack of variety even though the idea itself is to be praised. Some elements like the plot shows a very lack of effort into the making of the game unlike any other Paper Mario games. There's really all other evidences and these that points only to one conclusion that just seems to be so obvious at this point it's almost a fact:

The game was rushed all over.

There's no other way it could end like this. It is very clear to me that not much consideration was made to have the player like the game because it's so hardly likable. You have to not only discard the Paper Mario series, discard the RPG genre, but to also be very open minded about how poorly the game is designed. It is possible to like it for some good parts, but it's so ridiculously hard and even then, it's average which I consider bad and for the series, an atrocity.

As for why it was rushed, we know already (facts), the game began as a pm64 like game (not TTYD, I believe it would have been closer to pm64) as we saw in the first screens of the game and the infamous chain chomp one. The Iwata ask confirmed it and revealed that there was a project shift in the way. This is why it took so long for the game to release and this is why it would have to end up being rushed because if you have so many assets that gets useless in a day, it becomes really hard to have a not rushed game. Overall, I don't believe it was actually a good decision int he first place to shift the project that much, I'm sure it could have been a respectable game in the series if it wasn't for that project shift. I might not be mind blowing, but being consistent with the series is just the minimum.

Overall, this game is really bad in the series indeed, but I'm really happy to grasp how legitimate the hate towards it is. I now hate it even more, but to finally get how needed a back to root game is refreshing int he end, I now want it even more or let's be honest....

The series is dead if it doesn't happen.

I am not joking.....

It was a really fun game but not a good Paper Mario because of how different it was.

At least then lets hope that since this one was based off of Paper Mario 64 that the next one will be based off of Paper Mario The Thousand Year Door

ok, this would actually imply that spm is not a good paper mario game....I don;t think you meant to say it.

The way I see it very roughly is this:

Communication issue > project shift due to false belief of what fans want > delays and rushing the project due to more effort required to shift the project > rushed concepts > Sticker Star.

It's not because it's different, it's because it has so many elements rushed that it badly affected the gameplay so that it doesn;t even make sense logically. it is different, but the design is so poor that it's not the problem.....

Also, this is new:

https://twitter.com/RPGSite/status/597511799827730432

Pay really close attention because I think this has potential. There was a booth when IS was there in Osaka, Japan. One person took pics as proof he went into the event, but these pics means nothing, the game list is all the already made one from IS. What is new is apparently, some person from IS told one person or 2 that there was a Paper Mario game in dev. It's only words said however, but considering the James leak.....it's becoming even more likely.

look, I know how bad sticker star is and I will say the following: I don't care about anything but if it's back to root. I seriously think I will put a stronger importance on the announcement and the release wouldn't matter much because at this point, it's so needed now. Though, it does points towards the announcement this E3 being very realistic and again, I just care so much if it's back to root that I'm going to get worried the following weeks.

Nonetheless, feel free to talk about it :)

ATTENTION: read this post for an exhaustive Sticker Star review :)

...I really am trying to get what you mean but I think you have some English errors because "his" isn't used properly.....maybe pm me what you meant in French?

Because I also misunderstood your other post....although, I saw tons of fanart in tumblr, some are spm related and they are good :)

art and drawing are good you at least were close enough to the real color :)

can we make this clear?

The numerous leaks recently on Paper Mario have made me so hard to not get excited. But each one becomes more and more convincing...GAH it's agonizing waiting for a new Paper Mario game!

Also, for someone who's in the Paper Mario group, I haven't been to this thread yet. So to change that, I would like to be shown as a supporter for Paper Mario in SSB4! Seeing him get in would be a dream come true, and I would LOVE another Paper Mario stage as well as music.

there;s just 2 that are legit though, the one I posted above and the James leak.....nothing else.

People are just THAT tired of SS. I seriously feel it after playing the game.....

I think I should clarify by saying that I think the new one that surfaced today is the most legit one we've got. Everything before has been fake. It's just that each time I see a "leak" for Paper Mario (That walmart listing a year ago, the TTYD leak 2 months ago, and Nintendo Direct leaks including a new one) keeps on making me want the new game soon.

Also, I know this is going to get hate, but I thought Sticker Star was...ok. Battle system, partners, and story were the main problems, which I completely understand. But the music, aesthetics, and levels I quite enjoyed. The special moves were also quite humorous. That's just how I feel anyway, all complaints people have with the game I understand.

it's true.....as just a game.

It;s hard to think like this if you consider it';s an rpg.

and even harder if you think this is a Paper Mario rpg.

and the battle system IS the core gameplay. Look, if you mess up in that area, everything surrounding it won;t worth much. The presentation should follow the core, not being restricted....

and as for why there';s so much fake, again, people are THAT tired and at this point, some might be pissed of SS. Why do you think these happens anyway?

They just want it THAT much to make a fuss about it.

I';m actually telling you, if it ever happens, it's going to break sales record. At least for the ratio of game vs system owners.....I don;t expect to break the 7% of TTYD however....

I change my mind, i think Paper Mario actually looks cool and could be a suitable lightweight fighter in Smash.

:4mario: and :4gaw:!

So add me as a Supporter. You should also edit the part of the post where it says Paper Mario 64 will release on Wii U VC by april 30th, which has already happened.

ok, this would actually imply that spm is not a good paper mario game....I don;t think you meant to say it.

-------------------------------------------------------

Like a said sometime, English is not my tea so yeah. Also, very good review, you pretty much say everything and i am OK with you said. Also, Paper Mario Wii U rumor!? Please be not a fake...
edit: miss the good message, i am on Wii u does that count?
