One can see that Link is a rather powerful character, but it's the regional differences of the game that really can make or break a character.

Link's attacks still have extraordinary knockback, even at 0%. No matter the regional difference, Link is one of the best characters. It's just that people can be ignorant at "low-tier" characters and just use other characters worthy of low-tier.

Now look at Kirby. People think he is amazing, but one can ACTUALLY see that Kirby is THE WORST character. Jigglypuff is also very horrible because of the decrease in air height in its jumps (the 5th jump shouldn't even COUNT as a jump).

I can understand Samus being horrible.

YOSHI! What can I say about him that has not already been said? Ah, yes, he has only 2 jumps, and ALL of his aerial attacks stop his second jump. One misstep, and a character can edge Yoshi out. One powerful attack by either Link, CF or DK, and Yoshi can be shot backwards and his second jump canceled.

I can explain who can be better than who. Captain Falcon is THE best character in SSB64 because of his powerful moves, amazing combo ability and his fast-fall speed (which is not that fast).

Edit: Do we not have that data anywhere? I checked Sangoku's thread and it has the knockback formula, but it seems we don't have the knockback scaling for each move available.

Well, here is the thing that makes him drop in PAL for me.
He doesn't perform so well with knockback. Power and air speed may be better, but his knockback, IMO, is worse than the USA version. I don't know if it's either the character's resistance or something. It's just worse IMO.

It took me FOREVER, though, to buy and receive the PAL and JPN versions for my N64s; I don't hack/import into my Wii in any way.

But in Japan, he EASILY ranks number 1 because of:
U-Tilt Combo/Shield Breaker
Bomb Comboing
Great Air Speed and Recovery
Better Comboing
Better Knockback

(BTW, I play the Japanese version mostly now.)

It's so overused that no one really would try making another strategy and use this.
