I was wondering which button was more optimal for short hopping/wave dashing/multi shining: X or Y.

I think Y is the best button to jump with since it's much better positioned than X. It's closer to A and B and straight above the c-stick which makes doing aerials to the right less awkward than using X. For a more in-depth analysis, see Bones' post here.

Multishining is pretty much an easy one for Y, other than that it's really just preference. Some people have an easier time moving their thumb laterally and don't mind X for technically demanding things like shdl with fox, or X to c-stick with aerials.

I would say Y because if your going for wave lands and wave dash > fair you'll have a easier time pulling it off then X. But X can be mastered but will take practice. And with the wave land when you jump with Y you'll have a easier time pulling down the air dodge to were you can wave dash.

I use y for everything except waveshining, because dragging my thumb across the a button over to y and back helps with the rhythm imo
