I basicly new to super smash bros and I play melee and I was wondering if for wave dashing, l canceling and better gameplay if I should use X or Y to jump and which trigger to shield, I know alot of people say "its what you prefer" but if one is better which one is better

It's all preference. Y is a little closer to B but it's essentially irrelevant. Do what is most comfortable to you. Now, someone correct me if I'm wrong, but it makes WDing OOS faster if you use different buttons to WD then to shield but, again, it doesn't really matter. Just do what's most comfortable

Honestly, the only good answer is the one you already stated. It depends on what feels natural to you. Some people use their L-button for everything because transitioning from Z-cancelling (in SSB) to L-cancelling was easier since the 64 controller's Z button was used by the left hand, some use L because it is natural or they are left handed, some use a mix, and some (like me) use R for everything. Some people say it is easier to waveshine when you use the Y button because it is closer to B, but I never noticed any problems and I use X.

i personally think using separate triggers for shield and for wavedashing since it makes wavedash oos easier (imo).

Y is closer to B so it should be easier to waveshine, but Dark who is (arguably) the most technical player uses X to just so thats something to consider

For a spacie, I think that y would be better for your waveshines. I use y for wavedashing but X for all of my jumps and short hops as a marth main

Try them out and see what works best for you. Personally I use Y for onstage and X offstage. For L-cancel, tech, shield, and wave dash oos I use LT. For everything else I use RT.

l use tap jump to WD OoS. It feels awkward with X. (And l use X for everything else)

I also shield and air dodge with R but Power shield with L because l usually press L all the way down and quick because of the L cancels.
