I was talking to Crimson King about a week ago, and I was saying to him that it would be pretty cool to have a WWYP All-Star round, where only past winners could compete. Of course, the problem with that becomes finding judges, since it would defeat the purpose of having the best duke it out if some had to sit on the sidelines to judge.

Around the same time, I was talking to Virg and he asked me to run the next WWYP, as it has been a long time since he was able to compete in one since he's the most consistent judge by far.

So, it occurred to me: why not kill two birds with one stone?

What I'm proposing isn't a contest, but a collection of short stories by past winners. While I would like that the stories are new, they don't have to be, because the goal of this anthology would be to have a collection of the best work from the best writers on SWF. If you feel like you've already written an outstanding story, who am I to tell you not to submit it?

The time frame for this would be even more liberal than the timeframe for a standard WWYP (lol this will take forever). I'm thinking that we would take the whole summer to do this. That way, we can try and contact every past winner and ask them if they would like to submit something to the anthology. If we can't get a hold of them, then we'll include their winning entry. If they decline, we won't include anything.

This will also give those people (like me) who want to write something entirely new for the anthology enough time to do so, without feeling the pressure of a standard WWYP deadline. With an anthology, it would get all of our winners writing again, and it would let poor Virg write instead of judge for a change.

Good idea? Post some thoughts so we can get this thing rolling.

Personally I think it sounds boring. I've only been interested in WWYP because of critiques. not that my view matters since I wouldn't be able to enter it. Nor would the majority of people who view it. Added with how long it'd take, I'd vote against it.

Why not just make it so that the judges can enter, but that they don't get scored and only critiqued and the other two judges are the only ones to review it?

I don't understand what you're getting at. You wouldn't be "entering" anything, because this isn't a contest, it's an anthology. The time frame is to allow for the logistical considerations of getting past winners to submit a piece that they want in the anthology. This wouldn't be done in lieu of a regular contest, but in addition to (another reason why the time frame is so long, to allow people to do other things).

As for your scoring suggestion, the problem I see with that is it would throw off the contest if some people aren't getting judged, or some people are getting judged by two people instead of three.

I think it's a great idea, Jam. Granted, there are some people who have won WWYP and then sort of wandered off into the distance, never to return again (Wobbles and Cort come to mind) but if you want to ask them there's no harm in it.

That said, I'm game.

I don't really see a problem with other people than past winners judge other's writings. You could have some sort of selection process. I dunno how you would go about doing that. Just an idea though *shrugs*

This sounds like a good idea, it would help those of us who haven't won (Or entered hehe) a chance to see what it takes...all in one...thing. :)

Ah. Your "two birds with one stone" made me think that this was going to be the new wwyp, just past winners writing and putting it together

and my judge thing was that judges could like, post stories, but it wouldn't be scored or possible for them to place. Or maybe the judges can write their own entrees and the rest of us have a poll to vote which one we liked most. It was more just an idea for judges to sort of enter without actually entering.

I would like to participate and maybe not write a crime story this time.

Did DemonCaterpie ever win one?
I can contact him about it to see if he'd consider it.

I'm game too, btw.

Okay, so there is interest for this. The next step is to get in contact with all the past winners. I'll start that this weekend.

Yay, Wobbles!

PMs will be sent out by Sunday. If you've posted in this thread, I won't send you one since you've already expressed interest.

I forgot that now I can send PMs to 20 people at a time, so I'm all done now. Here's the PM I sent out:

Hello past winners of the Write With Your Power contest!

You represent the very best talent that Smash World Forums has to offer in the area of creative writing, and it's time that we celebrated your talent in the best way possible: an anthology!

We will accept one piece from each of the past winners. You may submit any original creative work for this anthology: your winning WWYP entry, a short story you wrote in the meantime, or something that you write specifically for this anthology. Any subject, any topic, whatever you think is indicative of your best work.

If you do not respond to this PM, then we will include your winning WWYP entry in the anthology. IF YOU DO NOT WISH TO BE INCLUDED, YOU MUST REPLY TO THIS PM AND REQUEST TO BE EXCLUDED. Otherwise, your work will be in the anthology.

This project is still in its early stage, and all the details haven't been decided yet. But if you're interested, please let me know by PM or by checking out the thread:

http://www.smashboards.com/showthread.php?t=232681

Thanks for the interest, and WRITE WITH YOUR POWER!

Jamil

So... Will there be a regular WWYP available during this time frame? Because I'll probably only have time to do this if it takes place during the Summer and I really want to try for that golden name and quill. I've been practicing my writing lately and I want to see how far I've come.

Yeah, there will be, although I need to talk to Virg to determine exactly when it will start.

I'm waiting for more feedback, but right now the tentative deadline would be sometime in August.

Well, hooray. I think I'll submit something original, since I really need to be writing more nowadays. Do you have any kind of word limit?

Well, it's been a week since the PMs were sent out. Only one person has responded, and that was Cort requesting to not be included. I'll give it another week, but it looks unlikely that we're going to get any participation from people who haven't already expressed interest in this thread.

I've written exactly three stories I'm satisfied with ever. I don't know which one I would submit.

Perhaps one of the anthology organizers with some spare time could decide for me. PM/IM me for details 'n' such.

Hey folks; just wanted to give a status update on the story I'll be submitting.

It's in progress ^_^ But I think it's got good potential. The only caveat is I may wind up using it in my final thesis project for college (though that's about a semester away), and if that doesn't fly with you folks then I can submit something else.

I hope to have a good product in about two weeks (August 4th/5th-ish). Happy power writing.

That's fine, Wobbles. I just don't want your professor to check your work for plagiarism, then this site pops up and you get in trouble :urg:

I started on mine but haven't worked on it in a while.

I guess that means I have the first step down to being a writer.
