You might remember way back on SmashCast #4 how the crew discussed the possibility that Brawl was running a new physics engine. Or you might recall Kirbykid’s even earlier post about the huge implications that that might have for Brawl. Sakurai hasn’t confirmed anything like that—but what we have now comes as close as we’re probably going to get outside the Dojo.

The website of Havok, the company that provides the Havok Physics engine used by a number of games on all the major consoles, has posted on its site Super Smash Bros. Brawl as an upcoming title that will be using the company’s physics solution. It was, as mentioned, heavily speculated that techniques like the Footstool Jump and Pikachu standing on crates were all added thanks to the use of Havok in Brawl, and now it appears we know this for sure.

But doesn’t that mean that some things, when thrown into the air, will float awkwardly? Like benches being somersault-kicked in Dead Rising?

I guess if the gravity’s high enough, it’s no trouble.

well I don’t know, but I’d rather that then the physics (if you call it that) of melee.

apparently there was a movie crate that you could hop on and ride, and it would hit people and break open, sorta like a ride-able barrel
