We have a lot of streams that give us the norm smash tournament. A couple legal stages, probably starting on smashville, 2 stock, 8 minutes.

Hear me out. Why not have items on during a tournament? Smash can be a lot of fun with items with friends, but why not be competitive with it?

Some rules (just some ideas)
-ALL items on
-set to medium (from what I noticed very high isnt that crazy with giving items, so setting to medium or high may be better. So the item can assist and not be overwelming.)
-stock set to 3 or 4
-All stages legal (except regular great cave offensive and palutena temple, since those stages are HUGE)
-Time to 8 min (sure why not)
-best of 3 or 5 (an idea...the looser of the last match gets to take out 2 or 3 items from the list of all items...the loser would also have the option to change thier character first, then the winner can change after they pick cause why not)

Dont get me wrong I love competitive smash, but why not change it up? Imagine having a characters final smash in hand on Orbital Gate strategically planning to get the hit while your opponent has a pokeball in hand as the only means to protect himself. Using say your mains final smash as a tatic could be a lot of fun. With tournament mode coming out, this could be a possibility and I definately plan to host of these item tourneys, could be fun. Having to avoid items and final smashes takes just as much skill as a regualr 1v1.

What do you guys think about this? Would you be down for something different?

too many broken items for there to be a fair match. whoever gets gust bellows just wins the match.

plus the random spawning points, possibility of broken hammer/squeaky golden hammer, exploding or not exploding boxes, etc just makes for a lot of luck-based gameplay rather than pure skill. I'm down for items for fun friendlies but I don't think I'd do a tournament full of em.

Yes the gust bellow is 'top tier', but it can be avoided if your ready for it. Yes exploding barrels and items are a thing, but thats the mentality you have to have with items on. When I say a tournament setting I dont expect say VG BOOTCAMP or Spooky to run something like this cause they never will, but for someone like me when tourney mode comes out to have something set up where you need to understand items are on, could be fun. So yea its more for fun and less tournament, but has the rules and ideas of a tournament.

I could see it being done in a friendly tournament, but never professionally. Personally, I find items to be distracting, and only really amusing when I'm tired of going "all out," and just want some casual play, though that's just my opinion.

Items will never be used professionally. We will never see Zero in an item tournament, but does that mean us, the smash gamer, cant have one with our friends and take it seriously? Dont think so

Wouldn't healing items be problematic for matches?

Why not put equipment on while we're at it.

When did I ever say it couldn't be taken "serious," in a tourny with your friends? Hell you could make it life and death if you wanted to, I don't care. I also never said the community couldn't have an item tourny, but I doubt we would ever see one for a reasonable prize.

Maybe the term tournament has a context that is Misunderstood. It'll never be at Evo or any events. Tournament can mean with friends...with people from smashboards..whatever. don't worry I'm not meaning to put words in your mouth :)

You also need to consider which characters would benefit from having items and which ones would suffer.

Main beneficiaries would be characters that have reflectors and absorbers (and possibly counters), also, quicker characters may benefit as well.
:4darkpit::4drmario::4falco::4fox::4mario::4mewtwo::4ness::4palutena::4peach::4pit::4rob::rosalina::4villager::4wario::4zelda:

As you can see, some of these characters aren't heavily played, so they would benefit from item play, as their reflectors are more useful and the randomness of items can give them a better chance of winning.

On the other hand, "top-tier" characters like :4fox::4mario::4ness::4villager::4wario: and especially :rosalina: would benefit from item play. Along with their fantastic movesets, they truly would become top tiers because of their influence on items. People who main these six would have a free advantage when beginning an item tournament.

Characters like :4sheik::4sonic::4falcon::4diddy::4pikachu::4zss: would still be stong, even though they don't have anything to help them with item play.

I think it would be fun to see a new light on all these characters. Diddy players may be good 1v1, but with items may struggle. It would be a fun thing to see and try. I think Rosalina would still be the best in an item match as her pull can direct all items to her. Really makes her top tier
