...You could assign separate buttons on the controller for jumping and short hopping? I for one find short hopping tedious and annoying to do, lol. Having this option would detract from the technical skill required playing the game, while allowing for ease of execution on well, cool stuff that requires short hopping, allowing the player to focus more on the match itself- which I consider a good thing. Thoughts?

IMO jumping is already fine. One button for one function with the difference in being a tap or a hold.

Sm4sh already has one of the easiest execution barriers of any competitive fighter (with the only issue really is perfect pivoting for some). The game was meant to have simple functions for each button and no function really does the same thing (function not button). I in no way am trying to knock you or anything, but I don't know how you can lower the execution barrier any more than it already has been. I mean if you want the option, you can have it, but now you have 2 buttons to switch between for virtually the same function which in turn one can mess up. Maybe you could have the option to set your C-stick to do a short hop + the directional aerial you choose, but do people really need that sort of a shortcut?

The reason it crossed my mind is that you have three buttons- special, jump, and attack- one completely redundant button left over. Why not use it?

Yeah, that'd be so cool. We could also assign buttons to preform true combos while we're at it.

I kind of agree that it would take away some of the skill required to get good at the game. Short hopping helps set apart the average players from the practiced players. For me personally, it would make no difference since I set my unused jump button for grab. Prefer to keep my index fingers reserved for shielding.

Short hopping is very simple. The game doesn't need to be balanced to make an already easy technique even easier. If you can't figure it out for some reason, spend half an hour in training and figure it out. Plus it doesn't even make sense, as not every short hop is the same height, you control the jump height by how long you hold the button. You would actually be handicapping yourself if you set buttons to make it so you can only hop the minimum and maximum height.
