Hi, I'd like to know what you think about my Metaknight. Any critiques or suggestions
would be greatly appreciated.

I'd also like to take the chance to introduce myself to the community since this also my first post here. I'm fairly new :psycho: to the smash series, having only played the original SSB64 on sporadic occasions with my friends and having played Melee seriously about a month before Brawl came out (I just moved down to Cali about 6 months ago and my new room-mates play SSB quite a lot so I kinda got into it). But I have played several fighters competitively in the past which include all the Street Fighters, Tekken, Soul Calibur, and DoA so I do have a competitive mindset in terms of learning ATs, mind games, and general strats. I'd like to know what I need to improve on - not necessarily on just how I play Metaknight but also simple general gameplay. I feel as though I've picked up the game fairly quickly but again what do I know?, I'm new to the series so I'd like any sort of feedback that would help me improve as a player.

Oh and here are my vids. They're in order from newest to oldest.
Also feel free to watch any of my other vids; criticism about any of them would help.

Judging from the most recent vid this is what I have to say:

1. Try using SH (short hop) combos more, it can give you a better combo arsenal

2. When I saw you recover from a long distance I saw you only using your multi jumps, there lies a big problem why? Use your first glide (hold x or y to activate whenever your wings are out) to recover instead and save your multi jumps for later in case you get knocked back.

3. You lack variety in attacks

4. You always miss perfect opportunities to begin a chain grab
Instead after you grab you keep holding on to them until you end your slide. D- grab and F- grab can chain grab so instead of holding your opponent until the slide ends immediately perfT until it is impossible to continue the chain.

5. And you dont taunt enough

Nice, thanx for your feedback. As for the chaingrab I'll start practicing w/ fthrow; for whatever reason I used to use it when i first started but instead went w/ dthrow to fair or tornado. Now that my friends have caught on I guess Ill go back to the chain throw.

Btw does anyone have any recommendations for landing the shuttle loop out past the edge...my success rate is isnt too great (I'd say I land it about 20% of the time) because my friends tend to airdodge a lot.

Your best bet is just keep practicing really, make sure to B cancel is when you're way out there, otherwise you start gliding and have a better chance of missing the edge. Also, from the vids, I saw 1 N-Air and 5 offensive shuttleloop, N- Air is a great killing move, just try working it into your game a bit more. And when playing on FD or Battlefield or anywhere with slanted platform bottoms, abuse Up B. If you can get behind and under them when they try to recover from below, you can bounce them off the stage bottom and to their death. Otherwise, great use of spacing and F tilts, you can you Down B for mindgames, and throw in a side B now and again to recover, just to mix thingsup.

On a last note, in comparison at least to myself and other MKs I play with, you can definetly be a tad more agreessive, but you cerntainly don't play a bad MK.

What he said ^^

Edit: after watching some vids, don't be afraid to follow your opponent into the air after a knockback/smash; therein lies a huge chance to tack on more damage with little risk. I myself spend probably over half a fight in the air. Also, most of his attacks carry a lot of priority, so being a little more aggressive doesn't carry as much risk as it can for other characters.

Once again thanx for the input.

As for the short hopping, yah one of my friends told me I should also work on doing that more often; he suggested messing around with Marth since that is on of that character's staples...I might do that over the next few days.

The Nair is sometimes hard for me to land - most of the time whenever I face characters with good priority in the air I just seem to get hit before I can pull it off if I don't immediately do a fair, bair or dair. I'll definitely try working on my timing with it though. I suppose I could use it to punish an airdodge (another weakness in my game that I can observe on my own).

BTW I play aggressive cause thats the style I prefer to play in any fighting game ;) . One of the reasons I picked Metaknight is because of his ability to keep the pressure on; better than average priority, fast ground movement, fast attacks and his seemingly overwhelming specials.
I messed around with Fox and Sheik when I did briefly play Melee (once again I only picked up the series recently) and loved their offensive capabilities. When I first got this game I messed around with most the roster (I tend to suck balls when playing heavies :dizzy:) and narrowed down the faster characters. Still play fox (can't say the same about Sheik) but immediately fell in love with Meta. Don't get me wrong, I hardly play recklessly, but if given the choice btwn an offensive mindset and a defensive one, I'd easily pick the former. Just my 2 cents on why I think this character is great and I'm sure some of you feel the same way.

Ironically I second ROB due to a suggestion from a friend - apparently I do play aggressively and should learn to play a defensive character to learn a thing or two about the practice...

I believe what Shentao said was "you can definetly be a tad more agreessive."

(Insert laugh at a "Thats What She Said" joke)

Not why are you so aggressive. Translating to mean follow/ chase the foe after your attacks! Don't just stand there until your foe recovers... Edge Guard, Edge Hog, follow him then do a fair, nair, or reversed bair, or even footstool. Dont just stand there! Meta Knight can make a good chase with his gliding so take a good advantage of that. DEFINETLY use more nairs. Nairs = uber powerful. As for shuttle loop cancel instead of pressing B turn 180 degrees to cancel that way thus giving yourself more verticle distance so when you fall you can tilt the analogue stick towards the stage giving you a better chance to survive.

Master reverse grab suppose to be very useful.

LOL thanks and sorry for the misread/misunderstanding. Yah my room mate says i should chase more offstage especially w/ meta. Will definitely work on that. Also thanks for the advice on Shuttle Loop, ill go into practice mode and mess around with it.
