Doubtful, they will probably choose someone with a good connection, meaning most likely in your general area.

If you use a Lan adapter with the Wii you should be able to play anyone without too much trouble. Them having a Lan adapter would help also.

Oh thank you.
But my Wii is connected through wireless.

Since i was thinking of buying a Wii (with my xmas and birthday money) from the states with the Super Smash Bros Brawl game, so i can play. Thanks heaps - awesome if i can play worldwide.
--> doubtful i'll pay overseas, unless i find really cheap somewhere -.-

Being a good little conformist
Wireless will add some latency to your connection, but I sort of doubt it will matter too much compared to the distance between you and the person you're playing. You will definitely notice lag when playing people overseas regardless of whether you use a wired or wireless cable; that's just how it goes.

For sure, With Friends will allow you to play with anyone all over the world granted you have exchanged Friend Codes, but With Anyone matches, I'm not sure what they prioritize. If they prioritize good connections, you might be paired with people within the same continent or closer. If they prioritize setting up a game quickly, anyone--regardless of location--will be matched up with you.

That'd be my guess, anyway.

I'd say, just by estimation, someone in the US playing with anyone in Europe, Japan, or Australia, is very likely to get lag times of up to 1 full second, which for any game that isn't turn based, is pretty bad.

I doubt it, I don't think the wii network for brawl will be as good as xbox lives connection, simply because it's only for one game, and HOLY CRAP IT'S FREE!!!!.... so be happy :)

i can't understand why you would want to play against someone around the world when the lag would be unbearable

stick to people close to you

Wait is this true?? If I have a japanese wii and brawl does this mean I can't play people near me??.. Or would the wii still connect to the american wifi servers?

My opponents will probably be within Stockholm-Tallinn-St. Petersburg radius. Not exactly world's most populated area but I think I should be fine. Hopefully the connection to Middle Europe and Britain will be manageable, because I'm going to gather friend codes from a large area.

Lag between the east coast of america and the UK is often less than the lag between UK and places in europe like Italy, Greece, Russia amoung others. I know this because i often play counter strike and Warcraft3 from the UK on servers based around New York and there is no problem with lag at all.

I believe this is because there is a direct transatlantic pipeline connecting London where I am and New York.
I should get my japanese copy of brawl in a week so if any americans live in the tri-state area, be kind to a european and try a few games with me when it is released there. :D
