Wondering if there's something wrong with my Wii U...

So, I've been experiencing an odd occurrence with online play recently, and I'm hoping someone else might have had this happen before to say what's up.

In short, the longer I play, the worse I lag. This is a relatively new phenomenon for me, but it appears to be that when I start playing online, my first match starts out running smoothly, maybe a small amount of delay beyond the normal but it could just be my imagination. However, throughout even the duration of the match and further matches the lag noticeably gets worse and worse, until by the end of even a single 5 minute match the game is nearly unplayable.

For any info I can give on background devices, I am currently renting a room in someone else's home. I have my own wireless router, but it is through their internet provider which I have no say in or information on. With that said, they haven't changed anything regarding this since before this problem started, and I'm seeing it happen even while all other residents are away. I'm also seeing no change in offline single player, and other online games through my PC seem to be working slightly slower, but to nowhere near the same degree (possibly even a placebo effect).

So my question is this: Do you think this is something wrong with my Wii U, or is there a more probably explanation? I'm just at a loss to figure out what's wrong, but it's really starting to get annoying that I can't play more than a single round online at any given time. Of course I'm happy to answer any relevant questions if someone who is a bit more tech-savvy can help me troubleshoot.
