Tournament Players are in it to win it so will they get time to practice with the game before the Tournament?
It's not just practice with the characters that is needed to win a tournament it's also the gameplay and physics that require getting used to.
What do you guys think will the tourney players get an exclusive demo version Pre-E3 or will they practice directly before OR will they not get any practice at all?

I imagine they'll get a few hours, maybe a day beforehand to get a handle on the situation.

They'll probably get a few hours to practice with each-other beforehand. I'd say they might even get mailed a practice build of the game (after agreeing to an, NDA of course), and might be playing it right now. It's very unlikely, but it's an idea.

Like nintendo would risk giving them a demo so they could post it all over youtube. i would imagine that they would get a few hours.

I think they will have some time to practice, get the feel of the characters. I wonder if anyone will use a newcomer, not having much experience with the move-set.

I bet they'll just throw them to the sharks and let em at it immediately. It's not that difficult to figure out a character mid-match unless its a character that has a weird gimmick unlike any other character (Ice Climbers, but even then you can just spam attacks/smashes and do reeeeasonably well against other non-practiced players)

I'm sure they will if they get some practice with the character a good bit before the tournament.

I think they will get somewhere between 2 and 24 hours to get a feel for the game and pick a character to use.

To be honest I don't want them to have any practice before the tournament. It would be very interesting to watch them adapt to the game within the tournament itself. There was a situation like this back before Brawl was released where hundreds of players in San Francisco got to participate in a sponsored tournament and had to learn on the fly. That's just my personal opinion though.

I think it depends what Nintendo is going for. Do they want to see a great matchup of skilled players, with the better player probably coming out on top? Or, are they interested in seeing a fun, silly battle?

I wouldn't be surprised if it were the latter. Being Nintendo, they'll likely have items on and such, so it would be fitting if they left the players to adapting mid-match.

Regardless, I think it'll be entertaining either way. Watching pros who have practice is cool, but watching pros adapt and learn on the fly is awesome too.

I think one question to ask is not just what the rules are, but what will be available to the players? Will they be playing on a demo version like everyone else? Will they have unlockable characters available? What about stages? What controllers will be provided? So many questions...

That's fine if it's just an open tournament; but this is an invitational for only 16 of the best Smash players in the country, maybe even the world. Nobody tunes into an event like that to see everybody flounder around not knowing what to do. They want to see the pros be pros.

It will most likely a couple of hours just like with DOTA 2's first International tournament where the invited teams did not have access to it until hours before the tournament started

While it wouldn't be too hard to trace back a leak to the source, I'd expect Nintendo to not send the demo out early but rather just give them a little time to practice before the event. The learning curve is likely not steep on the veterans, but it'll make for a better match if the players have time to get a feel for the character and game flow beforehand.

I'm curious if the participants will have to consent to a gag order of some kind to prevent any of them from complaining or bashing the game after the event. I'm not trying to be pessimistic because I'm gonna buy the game regardless. But I'm sure Nintendo would want to prevent an ugly scenario where players are open about any negative impressions they have of the game.

Probably a few hours to practice before the tournament actually starts. It would probably be much more fun to watch if they were just thrown right into it though.

While the complaints of the tournament players would certainly carry more wait, there will almost certainly be complaints branching out from the show floor and Best Buy demos, and there's not much Nintendo can do about that. That said, I would think the hype from the tournament and positive reviews will greatly outweigh any negative feedback. I doubt they'd bother with any type of restriction on what the tournament players can say, really, as that would get more backlash than just 1 or 2 complaints about speed/physics.

It is an invitational tournament; of course they are going to get practice. That seems entirely obvious, I mean, what is the point of hosting the tournament if none of the participants understand the game. They will get much more than a day, I am confident in that.

Yeah but pros have large followings. When a semi-famous person says if they approve of something, a vast majority of their followers will often follow in their footsteps and blindly parrot their opinion. If they all say "give it a chance guys" on Twitter, most of their followers will most likely wanna give it a chance. But if they say "it's trash!" then you all know what's going to happen.

I just hope they remember that the competitive side to smash was not discovered in a day.

NDA's? It really *really* depends. It's in a limbo state, though. Unless Nintendo makes them sign an NDA or sign some sort of power, there's nothing preventing them from having other people complain about the game.

It sounds stupid, but I'd like to see them go in raw. It's fun seeing players learn as they fight. Assuming this is a single elimination bracket, we may even see growth in strategy as it progresses.

I feel it's worth mentioning... in the future, we'll have plenty of time to watch the pros be practiced. We only get one chance to see them play for the first time.

They obviously aren't going to reveal all the characters before the tournament, so I suspect all the participants will be provided with a promo copy with most of the content stripped out a little while before the tournament.

As for NDAs, I imagine the threat of being banned from all future official tournaments would discourage anybody from leaking information.

I'm pretty sure people know how to be mature as well. If the entire roster is revealed at E3, people can shut their mouths with an NDA. NDA means worse than just getting banned from legal tournaments - sometimes it can mean going to court.

...though that hasn't stopped people before.

I would say they'll get a few hours of friendlies before getting down to the tournament. Enough to get a decent feel for the game but not enough to get a real intimate knowledge of the game.

Another good question is what is Nintendo going to do about items? Are they going to force it on the tournament? Will they have two brackets? One with items, one without.

They already disabled items on For Glory, so I think they are going to do it similar to For Glory rules. I just hope they don't force the FD stages on them.

I would like to assume if they're given some time to play the game before hand they might be able to generate a short list of tournament acceptable stages. That being said if Nintendo are looking to show their game off on a big stage like that they might not allow any banned stages.

I agree with this sentiment; it would be fairly entertaining to see some of that raw footage.

There's already Town&City, Battlefield, and Final Destination, Pilotwings looks OK too. Pyrosphere only if Ridley isn't the stage boss.

I say drop 'em in with no experience and make them use Pro Controllers to make the experience even more foreign.

I'm betting items will be on during the tournament. Either that or it will be For Glory ruleset only. Meaning only final destination clones.

As I said in the other thread, I hope they do get some practice before the tournament because it will lead to better and more competitive matches.
