A friend of mine is unable to get online with his wiiu, both smashbros and mk8 won't work online.

We live in Australia and his ISP is telstra, he is using a technicolor modem.

The type of modem he has is a little outdated, and for one reason or another, its blocking wiiu access to connecting to peers.
I have done a fair bit of research on the topic and basically everyone using this router is having the same issue.
The router does not have a DMZ mode, but instead it has an "assign public ip" option, which unfortunately.. is faulty with this model.
I've contacted telstra and asked them to help with port forwarding, apparently.. this router is not capable of port forwarding.

My friend wants to get online ASAP, as we are very keen to smash together, so he is looking for a new router, he works alot and is unable to make it to the shops most days, but tomorrow he has the day off. As the wiiu has already cost him alot of money, he does not want to spend much of getting a new router, I've told him that he shouldn't need to spend to much because well, any moderm/router would be un upgrade to his.

Where we live, there are no computer stores, just generic electronic stores (****smith, harvey norman, jbhifi)

I have found this moderm/router for him for $90 at a local store, my question to you is.. will this work with the wiiu? I've tried googling the problem with this specific router and found no results or similar issues, so I'm hoping thats a good thing and the problem does not exist.

The router I found is the "netgear dgn2200"

note: online purchases is a no-no, he needs to buy a router tomorrow.
note : he has a low budget, to much money has been spent on the wiiu already, and due to living in australia, we're already unable to play FG, so this purchase is just giving us the access to VS each other.

It looks like the dgn2200 is an ADSL modem. The first thing I would do is to check your latency using the ping program from a command prompt in windows to other locations in Australia. This is important because if your latency is above ~150, Smash Bros is going to be nearly unplayable, and anything over ~200-250 and Mario Kart will be fairly unplayable. If ADSL is the only thing available in your area, then you are out of luck. If cable is available, get it. If wireless (LOS wireless) is available, it is better than a laggy ADSL connection.

If the latency checks out, the next thing you need to do is make sure that the modem is returnable. In some rare instances, the data is blocked beyond your house. A call to the ISP can sometimes fix this depending on how close the tech support is to the issues at hand. IF that is the case, you need to make sure that you can return the modem.

If everything is good at this point, that is a fairly good modem, we use a lot of Netgear equipment here at work, so get it. Set up the modem and the WiFi security using WPA authentication. The defaults should work right out of the box, and if they don't, well cross that bridge when we get to it.

Companies like to embellish on their Range, so to be safe cut the modem range in half and use that as a benchmark for where to place it.

Let me know when you get things figured out. If things get real sticky, we can Skype it up.

Edit 1: just checked, Telestra ADSL is pretty slick and assuming there are no faults in the hardware and lines, sub 50ms latency is normal. Here are some servers in Sydney / Melbourne to ping that accept ICMP messages:

91.211.74.51
119.15.70.141
203.17.253.19

I have a 100mb NBN connection, but I'm lucky, he lives a few KM away from me and its unavailable to him, but he has an ADSL2 Connection. Hopefully it should be ok.
