I see that everyone is accepting custom moves for competitive play... and that kinda puts me off. Will I have to look for niche tourneys and to a lesser extent, FG mode, for competitive vanilla play?

I kinda feel you on that custom moves are cool but there is times where i just rather play with just the normal stuff.

I know people were looking at custom moves before people had found them all. I know of several that sound broken. I originally hoped they would be used and now I'm on the other side of the fence.

I've been looking at the custom moves, and haven't seen anything that's definitely "broken" more than some defaults. Jigglypuff can combo 0%-dead with rest

Most tournament organizes will wait before allowing Custom Movesets only because it gives a big disadvantage to those who have not unlocked the moves yet. For example Ganondorf's custom b special is the Ganon sword with the Warlock Punch animation. How am I supposed to know what that thing does? Is the damage good and knockback godly? Does he have super armor like on his normal Warlock Punch? I wouldn't know unless I unlocked it and tested it myself.

Palutena I'll let slide because all her moves are unlocked at the very beginning. On the fence for Miis but that's just my personal bone to pick with them.

I would say its going to be hard to predict that currently, as time passes and more tournaments are held, the "acceptable" things will change.

give it a bit of time after the release and see what people say is ok and bad

Or you could check the Ganondorf subforum, or one of the many custom move compilations that are floating around?

It bothers me because I can't go into a match knowing what the opponent is capable of. Before I could know exactly what their moves were, and how to plan accordingly. Now, I have to either learn all 500+ moves, or spend the first few mins of the match discovering what my opponent has. I'd much rather play with the standard characters that everyone will be able to grow accustomed to. If that makes any sense.

Probably, but even if it isn't I recommend that you atleast try custom moves out competitively. They can bring a new breath of air into competitive Smash Bros and just because it wasn't in other games doesn't mean we should automatically diss them
