So I've seen conflicting back and forth discussions around the web that the 3DS version of the game "can't and won't" be competitive. While personally, though I wouldnt say the 3DS version of the game will be "handicapped" in particular, or too weak/slow to support a competitive scene, I have a hard time believing that the 3DS version will gather and maintain a large competitive following or maintain any competitive scene whatsoever upon the Wii U release of the game. Thoughts? Can the 3DS version hold its own among the big boys, or will it get drowned out by its quicker HD twin?

Smash 3ds can have tournaments just like the wii u version. I just think that they are held in smaller tournaments like Brawl is in major melee tournaments, it's still very possible though.

SSB3D tournaments will be easier to organize because there will be no need to find setups. Everyone will just bring their own 3ds and be good to go.

No of course not. Just because millions of people are going to buy it and thousands of those are going to want to compete with it doesn't mean it's going to be competitive. It doesn't matter that all you need for something to be competitive are two people and something to gain.

So obviously no.

I think the tournament scene for the 3DS will be pretty big for a while. Yes the Wii U version will pull away a vast majority of people but I think the two can co-exist.

-Bring Your Own Controller (Perhaps venue fees will be applied to those who forget theirs)
-Practice in between rounds (Players will be able to get that much needed practice in case they are nervous or want to brush up skills)
-Organization will be way easier
-Easy for the competitors to pack up and clear out. Only downside would be that we would need a bunch of charging stations.

I would like for the scene to take off paving its own way. Look at Pokemon. No wait don't look at it. This is its own breed.

The only tournament issue that I can foresee is that there could be lots of wireless interference, which made the SDCC games lag, but there are probably ways around it.

Defiantly will and can be competitive, some people are just saying it won't be because it probably won't be compatible with a GameCube controller.

Same here, I think the 3DS version could actually be a big open door for more amateur Smashers to hop on the hype train and it would definitely be easier for smaller tourneys to be organized rather than the newbies having to find a way to get their foot in the door and join an eSports league which might not exist where they live. Ive been having that problem myself, no doubt.

I'd say the Wii U version would be MORE competitive because of everyone's love for the gamecube controller - myself included - but as other people have mentioned it would be easier to set up the 3ds.

Who knows? I believe most pros may be prominent within the first 1-2 months, until the Wii U version is released, but I wouldn't bet on them sticking around for too long. What I find interesting is that SSB3DS will very likely develop its own competitive scene, as the likes of M2K and Armada will focus on the Wii U (personal guess). In my opinion, it's going to be what Doubles matches are to tennis, and that's awesome.

It has the potential to become a thing.
Even though i expect people would prefer play with gamecube controlllers and thus, split the community.
