So far I think the Wii U version is amazing, but I am not sure if I should buy a new console just for one new game. And as we all know, the Wii U version also has the better controller options. I think about sticking with the 3DS version, but I wonder if there will still be enough "serious" players to form a competitive scene?

I thought you were including Melee and PM at first.

A lot of people hate the 3DS control scheme, so I would guess probably not, especially with the gamecube controller on Wii U. You can use the 3DS as a controller on the Wii U, though, so you can practice and play all you want on your 3DS and compete in Wii U tourneys.

From what I've read, most people who own both will play the Wii U version primarily and use the 3DS version for playing on the go. It's up to you whether or not the Wii U is worth it for you personally. The Wii U has a lot of other great games though.

I doubt the 3DS will have any real long term competitive presence. It's super convenient for quick friendlies since it doesn't tie up other setups, and it does have its own merits in a tournament such as making Swiss logistically simple, but it has a much smaller screen, the controls aren't ideal, you need to physically mod it for streaming, and it's not glorious HD.

I think most people will move to the Wii U version due to controls and clarity on the screen. Not much else to say.

Yes, many people will move on to the wii u version. Like me for example. It just feels better and more precise to play with a GC controller.

Swiss is not logistically simple at 3ds tournaments due to wifi clutter and the lag everyone has to deal with as a result. The lag alone makes the wii u version the only worthwhile competitive version, since we have both.

I managed to forget about wireless interference. Goodness knows I've been subjected to it myself.
