I'll bite.

I won't go either way on whether they should be allowed or not, just make a point.

If they are allowed, you'll have to develop a system for customizational counterpicking. Since the player is significantly changing their character, the other player should have a right to know about their customization before they choose their character. But if that player then is also allowed to customize the other player should have a chance to change as well, thus creating an insane never ending loop.

In other words, while they may be cool and I'd like the variety they may be a giant pain to implement fairly in competition.

that makes sense, and i understand what your saying but it doesn't necessarily has to be a loop. we can come up with some simple rules. like for example for the beginning of a match we can do like rock paper scissors to see who changing moves second.the loser goes first.i don't know if that would be fair to be honest but also maybe for the first match there is no changing.

now for counter pick only the loser gets to change moves and the winner gets to change character.there has to be some kind of rule for this because what if the low tiers can become high or even top tiers thanks to this.. i wanna see link, bowser, yoshi and all the others do good in tourney play... maybe it can make the game more balance...

but i guess we wont know until we get our hands on the game.because now that i think about it, it could also make the game more broken by making a already good character even better..

but overall i want it to be allow. because if i can do better with link thanks to this then hell yea

As long as players can transport their custom movesets from place to place, I'm sure it will be allowed.

I feel only defaults will be had at tournaments for certain. However, unlike items or many stages, this is a new stipulation to the tourney scene.

Give the game a year of meta and experimentation before this can be decided. I'm edging on the unoptimistic side due to how tradition reigns, but if we don't know the lengths of the customization then we can't make any conclusions.

I'm pretty positive it would have to be a special case or a special tournament, specifically for custom movesets.

Reason being, they probably disrupt balance. It would potentially be seen as unfair if say, you came in with a custom moveset and you're playing someone who doesn't have one. There's no certainty or way to train against that. And wouldn't the moveset itself have to be approved? I doubt you could show up with a random moveset.

So I mean, that's a possibility, having to 'register' your movesets with officials or something.

It's something that you can't really judge now. We don't actually know how involved it gets. It's something that definitely won't be allowed from Day 1, because we wouldn't know enough about it. It's possible you can make characters completely broken/cheap. Not sure that'd be very welcome in a 'fair' tournament.

On top of that, it depends on if you can even bring the custom movesets with you, and how you do it. For example, if it was via NFC or via 3DS or Wii Remote or what.

A lot of people are worried they won't. be balanced. I don't think that's a fair assumption since all of the ones we've seen have been balanced.

The other concern is hassle for tournaments. The best comparison is custom controls. Do they take more time? Yes. Are they worth it? Yes.

I'm really optimistic about custom moves. I'm hoping that they'll deepen the metagame.

Customizing characters will take WAY more time then custom controls though, especially since half of the Brawl and Melee tournaments I watched are so often played on the same consoles after you put it in once it's already there later and forever.

For the sake of saving time, it should be allowed if the player brings his/her own controller/3DS (with the customized moveset saved in the controller in case of the Wii U version).

Not allowing customization would detract a lot from the game, IMO. Kinda like banning grooves in CvS2 if you ask me.

We also have to see how much time it takes. Maybe there's a shortcut in the character select screen.

Do you know that for a fact? I'm not saying it will be but for all we know custom moves could be faster then controls.

I know it as a fact, I'm secretly Sakurai... ;)

The reason it will take more time is purely because technically each custom character is a slightly different character and to be fair it should allow other players to counterpick in some way. Which would involve a whole new rule system and a bunch of time during games.

They could just treat custom moveset as characters. Winner can pick a new character or moveset then loser can pick a new character or moveset.
