Hey guys unpopular opinion here, but I'm seriously looking for help here so please no trolling or saying "just use the joy-con." Can someone help me get a wiimote to work sideways for this game? I don't want the nunchuck - just the wiimote sideways like Brawl.

What I've already done so far is buy one of those "8bitdo" adapters, but the adapter treats the wiimote as if the buttons (with the exception of the D-pad) are upright. This isn't an issue since you can re-map the keys in the game (minus the taunt button but who cares).

So I got extremely close but I ran into 2 issues with this adapter.
1.) When I press any button on the D-pad, it presses it twice instantaneously. So if I press and hold left, my character begins sprinting (as opposed to walking).
---- a side-effect of problem 1 was that if you dodged downward, your character would dodge twice in a row sometimes - making it quirky to use.
2.) If you were moving left, jumped, and landed (all the while holding left on the D-pad), your character would stop dead in his tracks as opposed to walking left upon landing.

Anyone have success with another adapter? From my understanding, the Magic-NS adapter only supports a wiimote with the nunchuck... and I really don't want to convert to the joy-con since it's such a small controller.

I guess a compromised solution would be if anyone knows of a controller that works without an analog stick? ie. movement is all controlled via the d-pad? I really need help with this because I've pretty much decided that I'll never buy a Switch unless I can use the wiimote - as awful as that sounds to some of you LOL

Well, I don't know how to get a Wiimote specifically working, but I know at least one class of controllers that only uses a D-pad, even with analog-controlled games.

That's the HORI Fighting Commander, which has a switch to change the D-pad's function between... well, the D-pad, and either of the sticks. There's also a separate switch so that the stick clicking is accessible via the shoulder buttons. It's like a modernized Sega Genesis controller.

They're available for both PS and Xbox, which makes both of them compatible with the Magic-NS.

I have one myself that I use for Street Fighter 30th Anniversary Collection, Sonic Mania, and pseudo-Virtual Console games (Arcade Archives, etc). I've also used it on Super Mario Odyssey before, and it's pretty effective for that.
Haven't tried it on Smash yet, though.
