Viewing the initial reveal trailer for Super Smash Bros for Wii U/3DS, I noticed at the 1:01 mark, Mario leaps from the 3DS to the Wii U version: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xvudMu-5kIU&list=PLA1lIms2gwaDnOFGXUXtLj8KW5A4qNiKI
Mario's progression through this stage shows a leap that's not indicative of any consistent physics of the Smash Bros. series.

While many have speculated this area is a stage, no one seems to know where it's from or if it is an original creation. All stage reveals thus-far have been either classic (Battlefield) or representative of an actual game.

In this picture of the day, Sakurai says, "Where am I...? To be clear, the new Super Smash Bros. do not feature a story mode like the Subspace Emissary."

The scene does look to be similar to Brawl's All-Star mode insofar that it almost appears to be a "staging area" before the next battle.

Perhaps Sakurai's reveal trailer is telling us more than intended. We know the two versions will link somehow, but no details have been revealed yet. Perhaps to move a "customized" character (which we seem to think the 3DS will offer a more personalized experience), you need to walk through this area in order to utilize it on the Wii U. Why this route would be necessary, I couldn't say--it could offer the opportunity to create a more unique character, unlock stickers, trophies, or it could just for fun.

Sakurai's trailers have revealed aspects to gameplay without explicitly saying what they are and how they will work (Smash Ball, Wario Waft, Zero-Suit Samus, stages in Melee, etc.). The Smash U/3DS trailer didn't show that next-big aspect of the series...at least not overtly.

I'm pretty sure that PotD is an Adventure Mode stage. Otherwise, he wouldn't mention SSE. It's clear that they are still including an action-platformer mode of some kind, just without a story to it. I think the other strange stage from the E3 trailer is another such stage too.
