Wii U Pro Controller-best button config?

So I have a confession to make. I played smash 64 as a child and I went to the midnight releases for both melee and brawl. I obtained the 1 million matches trophy on melee twice. Once on GC and once on my Wii. And I hate the gamecube controller.

I know, I know, burn the witch. But I just don't like it. So I plan on using the Wii U pro controller, which I love (It's my second favorite controller ever, next to the ps4). The thing is, the buttons are close together and the C-stick is in the wrong spot! So I have a plan:

I intend to map jump, guard, attack and special to the 4 shoulder buttons, with my thumbs glued to the 2 sticks

What do you guys, gals and puffballs think? And more importantly, what are some strange yet effective ways to use the pro controller?

TL;DR, I'm going to use the wii u pro controllers shoulder buttons for everything. What are some unique control schemes you can think of?

Shoulder-only sounds crazy difficult to get used to, but I can totally imagine it being good once you get used to it, you'd always have a finger over every single button, so that's a pretty cool advantage.

Just for the fun of it, I had a control setup in Brawl that used only the nunchuk.

Like, every Wii-remote button was set to taunt, and the nunchuk, if I remember right, had attack on C and shield on Z, and obviously tap-jump on.

Or dunno, if shake smash is possible with nunchuk I think I had no attack actually set, and shaking was the only way to attack, so the nunchuk only had shield and special.

Anyways, whatever the case was, the fun part was that you could control two characters at once, one in each hand, it was crazy fun and really difficult and confusing.

Bwahaha, that's amazing, I gotta try that. Could you imagine teams with only 2 people controlling? That's brilliant

Just using the shoulder buttons? Sounds interesting. I'd probably be a goner if I used that though, haha.
Well, I'm not much of a GameCube controller user myself, so I intend on using the Pro Controller (and the GC controller if wired is required). As for a control scheme, I was thinking of setting it to map the L-Button to Jump, ZL-Button to Shield, R-Button to Z (for things like Link's tether), and ZR-Button to Special Attacks. Everything on the front of the controller would remain the same, unless I find it more tedious to shield, dodge, and stuff.
It's actually a bit based off of the control scheme I had for the Wii Remote and Nunchuk. It's how I preferred to play Brawl, after all. You know, when I think about it, I always use the new controllers as I move on to other Smash games. Adaptation! :kirby:

I remember back in early brawl days, before I switched back to the GC controller, I used the wiimote + nunchuk combo. Playing as Snake, I would have to shake the wii remote upwards to perform a DACUS. While that controller combo is pretty strange, I got used to it rather quickly. So I'm sure you could get used to any controller scheme you create, especially with the excellent Wii U Pro Controller.

holding the controller right now, i'm thinking:

L = jump (1/2)
ZL = shield
R = attack (1/2)
ZR = specials (1/2)
X = jump (1/2)
Y = grab
A = attack (1/2)
B = specials (1/2)

it's similar to my GCN scheme for brawl, which is:

L as shield
R as an irrelevant extra attack button for DACUS
Z as extra jump (if i'm using lucas or peach, which i don't)
Y jump
X grab
A attack
B special

i used to use nunchuk when brawl first came out, but i thought the c-button was annoying for short-hopping and there wasn't a comfortable way for me to DACUS. pro controller L should be way better for short-hopping than nunchuk C, though, since it's not a very deep button.

i'll probably buy the GCN adapter and at least one smash GCN controller in case it's necessary for tourneys or if i invite some special boy over who never played smash without it.

I remember I used to be able to play the wiimote but I was horrible. Up tilts were impossible as far as I remember
Wii Fight Pad all the way:
Also am I the only one thats bothered that its the same shell as the infamous 3rd party gamestop controller? but with just a few tweaks? I will admit it does look awesome but I cant stand that shell at all.

The only real difference I see are only minor. The fight pad has a nice paint job (obviously), a + button, a - button, and a home button. The analogue sticks have different grips and theres no turbo switch. The GS 3rd party controllers are mostly known for being pretty bulky (its a preference for some people if they have large hands) and not as durable as the 1st part controller (which is common amongst 3rd party accessories)

My Classic Controller control scheme for Brawl went as follows...

a: Jump
b: Attack
y: Special
x: Shield
L: Shield
R: Grab
ZL: Shield
ZR: Grab

I'll probably reuse this control scheme for the Pro Controller if the custom controls feature returns.

I agree that it looks like some design aspects we're taken from this one, but it looks like the other one is better quality, maybe because of the paint job. It also gives me hope that the fight pad will be more durable because it was worked in partnership with Nintendo.

Random question: Can you assign anything to the analog sticks being pressed in? Assuming they're even able to be pressed in like the wii u pro controller. I ask because i just ordered a classic pro today and am trying to figure out how I want my control scheme laid out.

There is a possibility that it is more durable, we'll just have to wait and see the reviews on it after a few days of its release.

I actually like this idea - at least, I'll keep my mind open to it until I've decided I don't like it after trying it myself. :p I'll have both a Wii U Pro Controller and the Smash 4 Gamecube controller, so I'll be able to compare them pretty heavily.

The Pro controller is really comfortable, so i could see myself switching if it feels more right to me.

So once upon a time I was into a series of games called "Megaman Zero". It was for the GBA, and I absolutely hated the "default" control scheme. I ended up setting it up so that Zero's sword (his primary weapon) was mapped to the R shoulder button.

It was the best choice I ever made, and I refuse to play it any other way. Thumbs for jumping and moving, R for slicing/shooting/stabbing/whatever. If I want to use a different weapon I just pause and swap them out.

Highly recommended A++ S-rank five stars. I might try this out for smash if the thumb buttons get too much in my way.

I have that GameStop controller, It's more light the Analog Stick is way more smooth and clicky while the Start Button feels loose.

I'm not going to be using the Wii U Pro/Classic Controller that often (and the Gamepad never), but I've been considering reversing the attack and special buttons because I'm used to playing Super Smash Flash 2 with a PlayStation 3 controller (using X for attack and O for special). Same with the 3DS.
