I was a little suprised I couldn't find a thread for this, but if you look at the 3ds layout, there is a wii U option:

Do you think this is used for sharing game data and DLC purchases? Or do you think you can battle between the two on shared stages? I'm a little curious myself how this will work...

I think it's just for transferring your custom characters and such, maybe other things like trophies and records.

I'm really hoping it's possible to battle between platforms, kind of like Pokemon Diamond and Pearl with Pokemon battle revolution, but who knows how easy it is to set up. It would be great to be able to be able to share DLC and characters tho.

Link to quote?

PS: he said no clones, and no Zero Suit Samus, sooooooo ;)
I'll try to find it, but he said it a very long time ago. It was initially cited as being due to the versions not sharing stages (even with the overlapping stages, it's possible the properties could be different) and other data (such as ATs and/or Pokeballs).

Edit: Here's an article.

Corocoro has also confirmed that you can trasfer the training status of a character to the Wii U, that's all we know for now. But I'm sure that there is more than just that.
