Your common5 is probably overloaded. If the game freezes when you select a character then either A) the picture you replaced the CSP with is too large a file size, or B) you f***ed with the FitChar.pac and made that too big. If the game freezes on map select then again your common5 is probably overloaded but if it freezes when you hover over a map then the image you replaced on the map is too big. If the game freezes when you selected the map then the STG(STAGE).pac file is messed up.

What I do to prevent this is lower the quality of the picture to reduce its file size. Sure it makes the image alittle pixelated but meh, it works for me.

I have a similar problem. I don't know if this is the right place, but here goes. My Project M freezes when I click on "Fight" on the menu. I've located the problem, which is the fact that my mu_menumain.pac is too large. I've replaced all the wi-fi messages through "Submit," and reduced a stage preview from 176x176 to 160x160. I still have a long way to go. Are there any ways to quickly reduce the file size in large amounts?

I think you have to re-encode the file as "CMPR" or something like that.

Allow me to assist everyone here. Inside the common5 file there exists three main subfiles:

1. sc_selcharacter2_en
2. sc_selcharacter_en
3. sc_selmap_en

Each of these files have size limits. I tested this extensively. To find out each file size just right click one of them and export them to your computer. Now, sc_selcharacter2_en is HIGHLY irrelevant unless your a veteran modder. sc_selcharacter_en has a size limit of 3.78 MB, that means the content in that file must be EQUAL to or LESS than that number. sc_selmap_en is 1.16 MB and the entire common5 file is 11.6 MB. If any of the content violates these limits your build will screech when you try to play it.

Export all your stage preview images to your computer, go to http://www.picresize.com/, click "Multiple Pics", shrink them all to the size of 100x100, download the compressed file, take the pics, head to https://tinypng.com/, drop them there, redownload all of them.

That should shrink your images to, literally, the smallest sizes possible.

OK, so I tried that, and it did significantly reduce the size of the mu_menumain.pac, but I don’t think it worked. Is still at, like, 5002 KB, and I think the max is something like 4187-4197. I have no idea what could be causing the problem. I reduced the previews like said, the icons for them could be a problem, and the only other thing I edited in that file are song names, which I don’t think have a major impact. Do you guys know of a way to pinpoint a problem? I know my common5.pac is fine (about 5 MB), and the files inside are fine as well. The problem is my mu_menumain.pac. As stated before, I fixed up the previews, which leaves icons and text (icons possibly, text I doubt) as problems. I have edited nothing else in the files. But I’ll keep looking. Thanks, and any ideas for the meantime?

EDIT: I just remembered, I also changed the stage name, which could be causing a problem. At the very least, could someone post the minimum size for Stage Names and Stage Icons, please?

All stage names should be in "I4" format which makes it at minimum at least 6000 bytes (rounded)
and stage icons could you be more specific do you mean the SSS icons or the preview of the stage?

Thanks!!! Oh, and I mean the SSS icons.
Personally i don't replace those since my pc doesn't display them oddly but very file you replace should be the exact same format as the old one

i save all icons in 256 color mode. it turns a 80kb png file into about a tenth of that original size
