Smash Wii U Wii Classic Controller?

I'm having trouble connecting the original Wii Classic Controller (not the Pro) to Smash. There's a picture of it in-game in the controls menu, and Wikipedia says it's a valid controller, but it doesn't actually appear on the Smash website or the in-game manual. Is it usable? And if it is, am I too dumb to figure out how?

It's usable. Just plug it into a working Wii Remote, turn it on, and play.

It works. Although in my experience its a little buggy. I'd just use a pro controller or the gamepad.

Oh yeah, it works. You must just have low battery or something. I'd recommend the Pro though.

It works just fine. Make sure the Wii Remote it's plugged into is on and synced.
