Why You Shouldn't Miss Combo Breaker

Combo Breaker, the third annual Memorial Day weekend event hosted by Gaming Generations, returns this Friday in St. Charles, Illinois! Running from the 26th to the 28th, this Midwest convention will feature a mindblowing assortment of 18 fighting game tournaments, from Street Fighter V to Brawlhalla to Super Smash Bros. Additionally, the venue at the Pheasant Run Resort is set to remain open for 24 hours a day through Sunday!

Combo Breakers’ tournament roster is quite impressive, and gives Smash fans and fighting game fans in general plenty of motivation to check it out!

SMASH WII U: Defending the Home Turf

Though many top names will be at MomoCon 2017, you will still see a handful of top talent in attendance at Combo Breaker. Heavy hitters such as Panda Global’s Eric “ESAM” Lew and Jestise “MVD” Negron, Evil Geniuses’ Julian “Zinoto” Carrington, will be there to challenge the locals.

The top three players in Chicago, Nicholas “Ned” Dovel, Tyler “tyroy” Awdisho, and Benjamin “JJROCKETS” Rowe are aiming to defend their home turf. They have all taken sets off top players multiple times in the past, so it seems more than possible that they could snag a first place finish in their own state. Currently boasting 150 entrants, there are sure to be a ton of sets to keep all of us Wii U fans entertained!

SMASH Melee: A First Place for Duck?

Like the Wii U roster, many Melee professionals will be at MomoCon. However, players like Phoenix1’s James “Duck” Ma, GHQ’s Kelly “Kels” Smith, and Abhishek “Prince Abu” Prabhu will be showing up to claim first at Combo Breaker.

With Duck being the highest ranked player in attendance by a large margin, he has a fairly strong chance at securing a first place title in the Singles bracket. It’s also worth noting that in Doubles, Prince Abu will not be teaming with Duck, his partner for more than a dozen Doubles events.

Dawn of Injustice 2

Netherrealm Studio’s Injustice 2, the sequel to the hit Mortal Kombat-style fighter Injustice: Gods Among Us, released this month to acclaim from critics and fans alike. Like its predecessor, the game has been quickly accepted by the fighting game community, with a multitude of tournaments within the past two weeks. For those who are into DC and Mortal Kombat, or just want to support the FGC, it may be an excellent opportunity to check out Injustice 2.

Rev 2: More Guilty Gear!

Another new release being featured at Combo Breaker is Guilty Gear Xrd: Rev 2, the third release for Guilty Gear Xrd. New characters and arenas abound in this expansion of the hit anime fighter. Guilty Gear Xrd has seen great success in the niche of anime fighters within the fighting game community, and will be sure to offer a ton of hype matches for viewers this weekend.

All the Essentials

Along with the new releases and Smash, all of the biggest fighters will be accounted for at Combo Breaker: Street Fighter V, Tekken 7, and Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3. There’s a title for everyone within the fighting game community to keep up with, and will additionally offer a chance for those of you who only follow Smash to tune in for some excitement outside of your normal viewing experience.
