Why people roll.

I want to know, why do people roll? I know there's a lot of answers but could you just give me some tips for my mental game?
I've heard from commentators that the best players understand this, that's why I want to know.

Low-to-mid level players tend to roll when they feel pressured. Either pressured on their shield or pressured for stage presence/positioning/control.

If you're asking for tips on how to mind-game someone into rolling against you, that's a little trickier and depends on the opponent, but it's mostly for the reasons above. It's like a panic button because of its perceived safety at those levels of play. It does have a decent amount of invincibility and goes largely unpunished by "noobs."

Most new players tend to roll to move around and "reset" a bad situation. High level players use it much more sparingly because they understand that there are many more options avaliable. A good roll is when it is used as the best available option so when you cannot WD backwards, your character has bad OoS options, or you are stuck in your shield close to an edge. Most high level players will opt for WD OoS or an attack OoS instead of a roll.

So for you personally, try to avoid using it unless you have to. Master wavedashing to escape shield pressure (less end lag and you can attack right out of it) or using a fast aerial/upb/usmash OoS depending on the character. Use rolls only when absolutely necessary as a last resort.

If you're dealing with shield pressure, more often than not your only options that dont rely on the opponent messing up are rolling away. Wd OoS is another strong option to reset a situation, and while it is more easily snuffed by moves (ie getting shined out of your jump squat) you have less lag afterward so its easier to convert off of.

Also look at the rolls of individual characters. There a characters with quick rolls and good options after the roll (spacies for example) or characters with long rolls (Mewtwo for example) who can use it more freely. Others don't have good rolls but have to use it because of bad wavedashs (Peach, Link or Lucario for example).
The only real reason to roll if you have a character with decent OoS is the invincibility on the roll. If the opponent already commited to an option you can use it to safely avoid the attack, it works if you are not punished after that depending on various factors. If the opponent hasn't commited to an option yet, rolling is almost always bad with characters having other options.

Coming from a casual brawl background I know that I have a very bad habit of rolling. I know how to WD OoS, I just always forget it's an option and "panic button" the roll. So what I'm reading here is I should try and avoid rolling altogether until my strategy and awareness of options gets better?

Yeah I would try to completely remove it from your gameplay just until you understand what every other option is, but rolling is good in some situations, so don't keep it out of your gameplay for good.

Thanks. I knew rolling was not always a good option, but I wasn't sure when I should use other stuff. I guess it's just a bad habit at this point. Thanks you guys!

I roll because I can't wavedash worth crap.

But for real, I've been trying to remove it from all of my smash games (64, Melee, Brawl, PM), just because I know there's better options. Sometimes it has it's place though.

The problem is everyone just rolls and doesn't know what the good ones are
Like dash dancing without really using it optimally
LEARN TO ROLL
DON'T LEARN TO UNROLL
THEN YOU WILL BE LEFT WITH ONLY THE ROLLS THAT ARE WORTH DOING
BECAUSE YOU WILL HAVE LEARNED TO ROLL

how is WD better then rolling?
Simple: You can act out of WD and can't be punished easily if done right, whereas once you input a roll you are stuck in that roll and cannot do anything until the animation is complete. Yeah you have invincibility frames, but if the opponent knows what they're doing they'll just go to the end of your roll and f smash or something, since once you roll you are guaranteed to be in a certain spot.

I know for me personally I'm just not good enough at wavedashing to do it consistently in a fight. I go for the same option in terms of execution.
