Why is Young Link so low on the tier list?

IMO he has good matchups and ways to deal with top tiers. I've practiced with him and find him really enjoyable to main. I'd like to know opinions before I fully commit to him. Thanks!

I've played a bit with YL. I'm no expert, but I'll give you my thoughts.

He has some good tools. He has one of the better nairs in the game, decent projectiles, and confirms off of those projectiles. He is mostly lacking in quick options. Additionally, he relies a lot on keeping his opponent out and building up damage with projectiles and combos off of those projectiles. Both his bomb pull and boomerang have a fair amount of start-up so it can be difficult to establish projectile control in the first place. This combined with his lackluster grab and inability to kill at low %s without a gimp is what made him so low on the tier-lists.

All that being said, I don't think he is a bad character. He just has trouble competing with the top-tiers. My advice would be to play the character you have the most fun with. Any character can win at a local level. And who knows, maybe you could be the player that he needs to rise up the tier list.

Dude I know a young link who is really good... my first tournament i played him and he bodied me... and also Axe's and Armada's young links are both amazing. if you want to become a dedicated yl main, i would suggest watching tons of armada yl and axe yl vods, along with VoDs of dazwa, Laijin, SparkingZero, taj, Chip, Chudat, Hero Sumblime, jash etc.

Now onto the character... personally i htink he is #15 in the game. He could be even higher depending on the meta. I don't know why people consider him so bad, maybe because he isn't very common, but you should give him a shot.

Good luck!

I watched a lot of videos of Axe and Armada playing yl and they make him look so good! I have movement down fairly well, I'm studying the projectile game more than anything right now.

Yeah projectile game is what makes or breaks a yl. Also knowing when to retreat in the defensive game is very important also.

He unfortunately doesn't have too many kill options, and doesn't combo people well. His recovery options aren't great. But that being said melee is far more about other things than the viability of a character. Mind games, spacing, superior knowledge of the game... Your character won't hold you back until at least 2 years into playing this game (casual-meta.)

At lower level YL is alright, depending heavily on projectile usage.

But at higher than mid-level it's extremely easy to gimmick any YL that doesn't have a severe player skill advantage.

The reason that most YL mains and "hopefuls" easily forget? His terrible defensive game. His tech rolls/getups aren't very good, he's got one of the worst rolls in the entire game aside from G&W, VERY easy to combo (falls faster than Marth but weighs the same), optimal weight/FS for many throw combos and set ups, easy to CC most of his moves to very high % (the Dair and Up are exceptions but they are very slow to recover), his recovery is actually quite terrible unless he can wall jump somehow or you have v1.00, and a shield that is already not great and it decays fast.
