Why is XP so much faster than Vista?

I bought a Vista pre-installed laptop a long time ago but recently it had a few probs so I was kinda forced to downgrade back to XP. The XP is a normal XP professional but it comes pre-equipped with a cool Windows 7 interface. I looked in taskmanager and I saw a helluva lotta RAM consuming applications yet my laptop was still frickin fast! If I had had that many applications running in my Vista version it would have been almost unusable. Is there a specific reason why XP is so much faster on my laptop than it had been with Vista HP? btw I'm not new to these types of technology hence you shouldn't hesitate to use any relevant terminology to be specific about why my XP is so much faster.

Windows 7 RC1 is faster than any version of Windows.

Then again Windows is horrible.

XP requires far less system resources to run, since it was developed when 2gigs of RAM was a LOT, and now 4gigs is standard.

Vista should NEVER be run on a system with less than 3gigs of ram. just the OS uses 1.5 gigs, and I see it running on 1gig of RAM systems all the time, and people wonder why it's so slow.

As an IT guy, I can tell you that while Vista is not terribly good, it's nowhere near as bad as it's reputation. Likewise, while OS X (mac) is good, it's nowhere near as good as it's rep. Don't buy the hype one way or the other. Every OS has it's ups and downs. That's why I keep both Vista and Ubuntu installed on my laptop. I use both regularly. There are times where I don't log into windows for 3-4 days in a row, and other days when it's the opposite and ubuntu doesn't get loaded.

If you want a fast computer, don't skimp on RAM. It's cheap and makes a huge difference. Make sure you have 4 gigs. After that, make sure you have fast bus speeds, make sure you are booting off a 7200 RPM hard drive, and keep your registry clean. Keep a second computer to screw around with new software you are downloading rather than installing it on your main computer first. You need to only install what you will actually be using regularly on your main box, so it doesn't claim registry resources. Keep that box clean.

Because vista uses more resources for a bunch of its features and stuff, windows 7 did a much better job of managing the new stuff they put in so its less of a hog.

All operating systems have many problems that come with them its just what you want, and how much fiddling you want to do.

Windows is the least customizable but pretty much everyone tries to support it so that's good. It tends to have some reasource problems at times but win7 clears up most the problems.

Mac is normally the easiest and simplest, but not everyone supports it, and if you want to go crazy on customization you can but you really gotta know what you are doing.

Linux: its the make it yourself operating system p. much its what you make of it, it has very little support, outside of fellow users(however it has alot of support if its being used as a server)

Windows 7 RC1 is faster than any version of Windows.

Then again Windows is horrible.
Look at how wrong you are. DOS is a ton faster than windows 7.

Thanks for your response and I also thank the other guy, who posted, for his response. I understand now. And yeah I agree with you for the fact that DOS is much faster than Windows 7. 7 is just a Windows vista filtered from a sieve plus a bunch of additional user friendly goodies.

DOS was also a basic OS lol in comparison to anything else anyway. Windows 7 is probs the better option in terms of performance and features. I am using W7 myself atm and it's great for me. Personally i think xp is a tad outdated for people looking for more advanced setups but it's usually a good OS. That's my 2 cents.
