Why is the Pokeball so appealing?

When playing casually, I feel like out of all the items in Smash, I have the most fun with the Pokeball. And looking around the forums, it seems like many other players enjoy using it.

Why? Whats so fun about it? What makes it so appealing to you?

On a side note, how do you feel about the new Masterball in Smash 4?

I find it fun because of all the possibilities, the rush to get it, etc. One of the funniest multiplayer moments is when everyone rushes to get the Pokeball for like a minute, catching it, grabbing it, reflecting it...

...and it turns out to be a Goldeen.

I would use Master Ball all of the time if it didn't ever contain Goldeen.
Seriously, Sakurai. I know it's a party game but christ, not every item needs to be a dud. It's so annoying.

Still not as bad as Resetti, though, which caused me to permanently turn AT's off in Brawl.

I think I like them just because it could have any Pokémon in it, and that factor is entertaining.

Largely because nobody knows who'll come out of it. The human mind dislikes uncertainty.

I like Master balls, except y'know, Goldeen.

Pokeballs aren't as one sidedly powerful as the AT, but still have a fun summoned creature inside that can give an edge, but with more varied effects than the AT's. Plus people just like Pokemon.

Def the randomness factor.

And I always liked that it gives you the sensation of really throwing the pokeball. You don't quite get that in the RPGs.

1. The random factor. Placing a Pokeball on a certain spot on a stage, hoping for a certain Pokemon that will cause the most mayhem in that spot. Which leads me to...
2. The chaos they cause. You can't tell me you've not placed a legendary Pokemon in a place which just makes the room erupt into fits of laughter and screams as it tears everybody to pieces when playing with a group of friends. For example, playing on BF and placing a Master/Pokeball with a legendary Pokemon right in the center of the stage. It never ends well. Especially when you deliberately throw people who are desperate to get away, right into said Pokemon's attack.

It is the unknown factor IMO.

There is the chance of getting something amazing that turns the tide of battle in your favor. Even the chance of that makes players gravitate toward it.

Most of the time it isn't a game changer... but no one will willingly be that person who left that chance alone.

On a side note: Goldeen needs to be patched out and replaced with magikarp. Be true to the game, not the anime!

When you throw it your character looks like a pokemon trainer. That's seriously my #1 reason.

Well you're definitely guaranteed a Pokemon that will do something unlike the Nintendog on the Assist Trophy side. D:

That along with the fact that I'm quite fond of the Pokemon characters. xD

Because they're pokemon, and there's usually plenty of fan-favorites that are chosen. Plus, supports are pretty awesome when you get one in particular that can just wreck the competition. But then there's that Goldeen.....

And what Smash player worth their salt wouldn't join the mad dash when one spawns?

Because there's always a special surprise inside, and everyone loves surprises.

It's like those wonderballs before they were taken out of production because those stupid little kids kept choking on them.

You'll never know wha you get inside!

To train 'em is my cause!
I will travel across the land... :4charizard:

As for Pokéballs, they are just plain exciting, that's all there is to it. It's a case of curiosity in the midst of battle at its best. That rush, the uncertainty! What companion will come out to your aid? Will it be a Pokémon that'll help you wreck face or will it be the notorious dud, Goldeen? Nothing quite like that rush with 4+ players duking it out for the Pokéball =P

I wish pokeballs were real so pet transportation would be easier. Especially on trains or airplanes. My dog freaks out on planes and hes a well behaved golden retriever.

Aside from the fun and whimsical, turning-the-tide-of-a-match powerful nature of the Pokemon themselves, I guess because they act like a nice "beast summoned forth/pet/support character" hybrid, in addition to being incredibly flashy (especially legendary Pokemon) and providing elemental attacks where you wouldn't normally see them (such as water attacks in Pyrosphere, Brinstar 64, or Norfair; or fire attacks on Distant Planet). Additionally, some Pokemon provide a fun "anticipatory" nature - for instance, the second Lati@s or Snorlax come out, you know you're gonna have to do some dodging for a bit. Finally, aside from performing cool trick shots and amusingly bopping Poke Balls off the head of your opponent, some Pokemon take care of all the work/fighting and let you "relax"/"catch your breath" for a while (well, this seemed more apparent in Super Smash Bros. 64 and Super Smash Bros. Melee, at least).

The fact that you never know what you'll get, the appearance of many fan favorite critters, an th fact that they are generally less absurdly unbalanced than assists trophies.(compare pokeballs which range from goldeen(silly and useless but IMO should've been replaced by magikarp) to the lati twins/arceus(very powerful but not entirely free) to AT's which range from a hinderance(nintendog) to a almost guaranteed KO/near-KO(gunman))

I like it because I get to summon Pokemon. I sometimes just play with Master Ball just because legendaries are my favorite in Smash. Too bad Goldeen still comes out of Master Balls.

The gamble of if you're getting something amazing or something terrible, and when you get that good outcome is what makes me love the pokeball.
