Why is everybody's friend code 12 digits?

Im trying to add friends but everyone is always putting down 12 digit numbers while the wii will only accept 16 digits for a FC im really confused could you guys help me?

You're entering the codes in the wrong place. Go to Play Online > With Friends > Friend Roster.

There is no "Play Online" on the wii menu.

Well everytime I hit Play Online it doesn't connect and says - Disconnected from Network Error Code: 60000

60000 means your friend code is invalid. Delete your save file, and use the Wii menu's data management to copy this one from an SD card to your system.
