BRING ON THE SALT!
So, the stupidest thing I can possibly see in a smash tournament is a single elimination match where there's two opponents and of course, the one that is not as good as the other one wins. Oh! Round 1 too. So, whats the display of how good the players are? the worse player is "better". One reason you might lose to a noob is sweaty hand syndrome, which isn't stoppable, or lag in an online match, which isn't stoppable. Other times you just got spiked at an early, killed off the side at 30-70% before you should be or killed by little macs stupid gamebreaking ko punch in 2 stock matches, which kills about 13%. maybe you were just on town and city and the stupid platform decided to kill you when you had lag on a move. Maybe you just SDed. But you get no second chance, and out of the unlucky loss your opponent then goes on to get 2-0ed next match. how can this NOT be frustrating?
In double elimination however, one of these dumb unlucky things happens to you and you get a second chance, and if you get killed that same way, you're probably doing something wrong. In double elimination 90% of the time at least one of your losses will be legitimate and not the result of something stupid like listed above. Single elimination provides a false display of skill and I think it should never be used in tournaments that take themselves seriously.
As a side note, I have never came in last and have even gotten into TWO finals in double elimination tourneys, but in both my single eliminations, I lost first round. One of them was my first tournament though so I was inexperienced
