The reasons I have heard people disliking is because "it's big", "it's weird", and "I don't like the edges." Most of the time, I hear reasons that essentially mean, "I don't want to get used to it." Like its this big cumbersome mass (as if Pokemon Stadium 1 isn't), that isn't worth the time of day. I don't think its perfect, but I do like having it as a counterpick in the game for a few reasons.

The biggest reason is that it has such an interesting affect on matchups.

-The incline and big pavilion nerf horizontal games to an extent. Which is cool, because it gives an nice soft counterpick to matchups of characters with better vertical game than horizontal against characters that are more horizontally focused in the matchup (like DK against spacies, or Ness versus Marth). It gives vertical game a nice showcase. I like that. I really do.

-It means characters with horizontal kills and aerial control work well on it (Wario mainly).

-It gives glides few interesting choices at any given time.

So there a number of reasons to counterpick it (making it dynamic and situational to how the player feels they want to address the matchup). I love that as a counterpick. There is more decision and strategy in it other than "I get a 90/10 advantage on this stage."

The other reason is that all reasons to counterpick the stage are really soft counters. It doesn't eliminate horizontal game just makes it (for once) not as good as vertical game. It doesn't make glides god like but just gives you more to do with them. I find this to be such an interesting stage.

Is there any people who also like this stage as a counterpick? Any other reasons for disliking it other than the fact people who rely on their horizontal games almost entirely don't like adapting to it? Other abuses of it (other than endless glide toss XD) that I am not aware?

It's alright for a cp, but I generally do not go there, unless the bans took away my other options.

I do agree with the complaint about it's size. Side blast zones should be brought in a little closer, imo. Also maybe alter the bottom right side to avoid getting stuck under it while trying to recover. Other than that it's fine.

tbh I don't think anyone likes PS1 either. I'm actually pretty sure that at least the entirety of DFW is about to ban it entirely in tournaments in favor of PS2 if they haven't already.

A lot of places are banning PS1 now because it's just a worse version of PS2.

????
not a variation of battlefield with slight blast zone changes; must be dealt with using the most potent form of fire

Eh...

Not really that fun to play on.

Good counterpick competitively, but I'd rather not play on it at all.

The right platform is -very- close to the ceiling. Uncomfortably so.

As a stage I like it, but I hate Skyward Sword. Because of this, I try to avoid it at all costs.
Although I love the Gannondorf's Castle reskin of it.

Skyloft right platform: 142 units away from the ceiling
Battlefield top platform: 146 units away from the ceiling

There was a texture glitch with it that got it banned, IIRC.

I'm not really sure what made people not want to play on it, to be honest. I loved the stage. One of my go-tos.

Who likes Skyloft?
Short answer:

Yes.

Long answer:
Who cares for a long-winded fanwank about why a stage isn't terrible? Hue hue.

My personal opinion is that there are slightly too many large-ish stages for my liking, since I generally prefer playing on smaller stages. I do enjoy Skyloft, but I like it better as a banned stage than as a counterpick because there are already so many "wide" stages.

EDIT: To clarify, I think 4-5 is the ideal amount of counterpick stages, so I usually prefer to not have Skyloft because there are many other counterpicks that I like better. I think Skyloft is a really great stage, but my personal opinion is that the legal stage list should be fairly small.

It isn't so bad of a stage, but I don't think it has a place in competitive play. Namely, Skyloft is a stage where holding control of the central area is actually a disadvantage for most characters. The stairs mess with anti-air coverage and outright nullify a lot of ground pokes used in their general area, unless you are specifically sitting on the stairs and attacking to the right, which only really helps if your opponent decides to approach and you intercept it. While holding center stage, aerial crossups are also more difficult to punish because standing on the stairs and turning either aims you straight into the ground or right over your target's head.

The platforms to either side of center stage are either too high to escape to, or easy for a select few and impossible to chase for the rest. On other competitive stages without platforms to jump to this doesn't play out too horribly; for example, on PS2 or Smashville escape often entails dashing back from center stage to the area under a platform, which is a readily available option. This offers protection and better control of the area above you, opens platform mobility options, and obviously puts some distance between your opponent and you. However, on Skyloft, dashing away means you've left center stage behind to impede your pursuer and gained some breathing room, but most characters still have few mobility options on the higher platforms and don't gain any protection or control above them because they can not properly threaten the platform space above them. Additionally, most moves with still-decent coverage on or around the stairs are removed from your option repertoire by dashing, and moving up or down the stairs can easily impede a retreat (while this may contradict the typical tone of "camping is bad," keep in mind that I'm trying to express why center stage is a bad place to be).
In fact, I'd say that escape options from center-stage are perfectly fine, and a healthy aspect of a good competitive stage. I find that the best stages do a good job of limiting escape options near the ledge, and ideally high up as well, which the high-ish platforms that go right to the ledge on Skyloft don't exactly uphold fairly across the cast, either.

This all gives it a unique feel, but given that center stage acts as a nonphysical barrier of sorts, as well as the overall stage size, it tends to encourage camping and skew matchups. Maybe my mind will be changed, but I do not see any comparative merits for a place on the competitive stage list.
