why does z sometimes shield?

this happened to me in brawl to, odd to see it here. i have it mapped to grab, obviously. why does this happen?

Grab = shield + attack

So the Z button (or any button you set to grab) is a combination of those two things. If you press the grab button at a time when you can't grab, for whatever reason, it will shield.

This is because grab is considered by the game to be a simultaneous input of shield + attack rather than an input of its own. If you press grab before you can act, and hold it until you can act, it will shield.
