I have been playing online here and there and have noticed (and maybe it's only me) that the gameplay overall just seems slower as opposed to when I'm not online. I want to say it's because it's online and there is lag or whatever but the characters feel more floaty, animations are slower. Everything. Idk. But it's messing me up and putting me off to the online portion of this game. I considered getting the ethernet adapter in hopes of remedying this problem

Fighting games online are completely different than fighting games online. Regardless of how good the net-code is written, everything is limited by the distance the data has to transfer. And assuming they're using TCP instead of UDP, any input is effectively being transferred twice across the network.

tl;dr: The speed of light is too slow for games as quick and precise as fighters. Just have to accept it (or figure out how to break the modern laws of physics).

Your probably feeling input lag. When you play smash bros online, your button inputs don't register for a short period of time, but it's a period of time that still makes a big difference in gameplay.

If you are referring to play styles however, their are definitely some campy people online who want to do any thing to win. But that's just how fighting games are sometimes and you can't fix that.

The lag in general has been pretty nasty. It's completely unplayable at times and I have a solid connection (90 down, 12 up, 18 ms ping). My console is in DMZ so it isn't possible for it to be a open vs closed connection issue. I'm playing Lucina and it's...just nasty. When you lose a game to a scrub that spams charged smashes because your input is delayed or ignored is just...unacceptable. About half of the games I have played online feel like I am playing underwater.

a friend of mine is always complaining about lag online, but a different friend of mine and I don't feel anything different most games. It makes sense though, since each move has to be sent to the server. It may just be different for each person... Or Johns.

Yeah, playing as Lucina online is freaking brutal. I am in pretty much the same boat as you. Fast internet connection but losing out to scrubs who nail you with a smash attack because your counter decides it wants to go off a second later than it should. I really want to get good with her, but you have to be really precise to play her, and that doesn't mix well with online. The sad truth about online is that the heavy hitters are always going to reign supreme over the characters who rely on getting quick hits in and chipping away at hp.

Earlier tonight i got pretty mad when I was just slaughtering a Dedede, getting his damage up above 150% with a pretty much non stop onslaught of attacks as mario for both of his stocks but he ended up just getting me with a charge down smashes that ended me at 70% for both stocks.

Super Smash will launch this week in Europe and I'm afraid that there will be a lot of lag in the first week. Is there a big difference between Wi-fi and LAN cable online? Should I buy a LAN adapter?

I have been wondering about that myself. If I can kill the lag with a LAN adapter it would be worth the purchase.
