Why do you work hard in Project M (any smash game in general)? Money? PR? Fame? Or...?

Hey guys! ChosenL here, although most people don't know me or my region because Norcal PM scene hasn't really been active on smashboards, like.... at all!
Anyway, I just want to hear about people's thoughts on this. Why do you work hard in Project M (or any smash game in general)? Is it to get good? Why get good? So you can place high in tournaments? Place in power rankings? Win a lot of money?

Lately, I've been seeing a lot of salt in the smash community; from the little girl gamestop prank to death threats, from Apex dropping Project M to power rankings people aren't agreeing with. People are forgetting about the basics like having fun and playing a game they love. I made this video to show my love for the community and reminding people that a PR isn't the most important thing. It's just there to show you how you're progressing, and who to beat and look out for. Seriously, guys, have fun! All this talk about who's better than who all started just for fun anyway. Go make a huge PM tourney yourself since Apex isn't having one. As for the little girl prank.... really? Your emotions getting rekt over that?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ypFhBgV7Tks

Shoutouts to Norcal Smash community, for recognizing me for all my hard work. Everything you guys say to me is like another person putting their hands in the air to increase my aura; my spirit bomb. I hope this video inspires people to believe in themselves. It's not about being the best or making it into a power ranking. I value the personal recognition I receive from the smashers I meet more than my ranking. If I'm in your personal PR, then I'm happy with that. I mean come on! The cheering, the shoutouts, the compliments; this is all better than a getting a number next to your name.

Let's all have fun and enjoy the game, guys.

Getting good to me is understanding the depth of the game, and thus having more fun in general. Everything else would be a pleasant side-effect. The game is fun, but even more fun when I play it to the best extent I can play it at.

Smash is fun. However that's not why I work hard. PM got me back into the Smash series, and it's just what I've been looking for in a Smash game. Why I do want to work hard is to sharpen my mind and understand PM. I'm unfortunately crippled by a mental condition that makes it incredibly difficult to focus. My mental processing is also a tad slow. I want to overcome these issues.

I do it for fun dem Franklins.

Seriously however, I enjoy the game a **** ton and bettering myself is always on my to-do list when it comes to my pastimes. But the community pushes me to improve as well. I still can't tell which I like more: Wowing people or being wowed. It does my heart pleasure to think back on what I've actually learned and accomplished over the years, but likewise, I love seeing how far everyone else has come as well, not to mention all of the potential that the newcomers present. It's awesome, you're awesome, everything's just... awesome. That motivates me to become awesome.

Why, you ask?
To surpass my friends.
To rise above them skill wise.
To torture their souls,
With 4 Stocks,
With 0 to Death combos,
To endlessly Smash them,
Until they scream in agony,
"PLEASE MY FRIEND NO MORE!"
But their friend isn't here anymore.
All that is left is,
FEAR ITSELF.

Dude same >< I have meds for it now, but slow reaction/processing time can really suck sometimes. Usually only has a significant effect on my play if I forget to take meds, but it still sucks that it happens in the first place :/ also, ditto the part about PM bringing you back to the smash scene lol, dropped Melee/Brawl back in '09 and got back in this January

I'm a Washington player, Maybe I'll see you at the Pacific NW Regionals :D

I play to innovate, and to be respected (considering my age, I'd be a stereotype if I sucked at the game). and It's fun as crap in the process.

I work at it for two reasons. One of for an attempt self confidence boost. I want to know that if I set my mind to something and work really hard at it, I can git gud at it. If you watched me playing today vs 2 months ago, it'd look like two totally different players.

The other is that I just like being good at games that I enjoy, just tends to happen. I don't like losing, so I get better until I stop losing.

Working hard has mainly been so that I can beat people that are better than me. It makes me happy when I can overcome hurdles like that and smash so far is one of the games that I'm actually decent enough at that I can compete with people I've never met before. (however I could always step up my game)

I don't really know tbh, I always liked smash. One day I saw people play it competitively and that was it. No deeper meaning for me haha.

But what I have gained from smash is beyond what I would have ever expected, the time I've spent in smash is priceless. I wouldn't give it up for anything.

And despite how much **** pm gets, this game is godlike.

Seeing myself progressively getting better is immensely satisfying. I also REALLY want to get in my State's Melee Power Rankings (no one plays PM here :( ). Not to prove anything, but just to see if I can do it. Also, yeah, high level Smash is the funnest gaming experience ever.

Cause I like to have fun in Smash.

But the best way to have fun in Smash (for me at least) is to win the match.

And, well, here I am...

Because Smash is fun. It's a chance to meet new people and have new experiences. There is so much to learn in every game, that it never gets old.

Heck, even in grand finals, I forget that I'm in a tournament because I'm just having too much fun playing the match.

Nothing beats a good comeback, especially in teams, especially when you're down big. I had this one comeback in PM that felt straight up LEGENDARY!!!

My brother and I in PM 2.6 about 2 years ago had this EPIC comeback from down 1 stock each against 3 and 4 stocks on our opponents. It was Game 3 coming off a big loss on our end that my brother ultimately kind of blew by having his timing off.

I had been playing terribly as my Ness this match, and this Wolf we were facing just threw me in the trash routinely. I took insane amounts of damage, got KO'd 4 times in about 2 minutes, got KO'd another time after stealing a stock, and stole my brother's 3rd stock. During this, he had to cover a lot of 1v2's and live off incredible elusiveness with his Marth, and he managed to steal a KO off the DK we were facing. I will never forget what it felt like to do this comeback, especially on Fountain of Dreams with THAT EPIC MUSIC PLAYING.

We start things out on the comeback with my brother catching both players in a a string of fAirs after his just clinic of Marth elusiveness. I'm thinking "I can't do anything," so I throw out this PK Flash because we need a Hail Mary fresh out of my 5th time being KO'd. Well hail to that girl, because I KO'd both foes and didn't hurt my brother, lol. So now it's 5 stocks to 2 stocks, and we maybe have a tiny chance.

Right out of the next stock for both opponents, I get hit maybe twice and then I land this good string of grab chases for about 30% on the DK. My brother at the same time is controlling the pace against the Wolf, got a up throw chain going, and gets a clutch fSmash tipper to send the Wolf a good distance. I then back throw the DK into a new fSmash my brother threw out, and the DK hits the Wolf. I took this opportunity to dAir and KO the DK. On the rebound my brother grabs the Wolf on the recovery, up throws them, and I bAir them for a good KO. It's 3 stocks to 2, but things are about to get HARD.

Fresh off being KO'd (one of them waited for the other to spawn) both opponents team against me, and do so effectively. They use their invincibility incredibly well, and box out my brother. They do about 110% in about 20 seconds. I'm at about 150% as Ness right now. The string ends when the Wolf gets me off stage, but my brother blocks him from being able to finish me. In exchange, my brother takes a nasty DK fSmash. When I get on the stage I land something like 5 or 6 straight fAirs on the DK. My brother does some sleek aerial maneuvering against the Wolf floating through the air and landing aerials, and ultimately we trade off our main foe of focus. I land a super lucky bAir with Ness (it hits the end of the end of the end of the hitbox of the sweetspot), and I land about 3 straight bAir's to finish off the Wolf. It's now ALL TIED OFF AT TWO STOCKS APIECE, ONE STOCK A PLAYER!

At this point all I can think is "I CAN'T LET MY BROTHER DOWN! HE'S DONE TOO WELL AND WE'VE COME TOO HARD TO LET IT END WITHOUT VICTORY!" The nerves set in. You know that it's DO OR DIE TIME!

While I was finishing off the Wolf, my brother takes a bit of a beating from the DK. I charge in, up throw the DK, my brother dAirs him onto the stage, and before he hits the ground I bAir him. My brother then gets rushed by the Wolf. The Wolf is landing a fancy shine combo. I want to help, but I got to finish off the DK first. I go down and do a well timed dAir spike to finish off the DK once and for all.

HOLY CRAP IT'S ONE VS. TWO AND WE ARE UP A STOCK!

But wait, my brother is at about 130% and I'm at nearly 200% at this point. My brother gets hit by a clean down smash by Wolf, and gets hit too far to recover. I run over, nAir through the Wolf right after the attack, and nAir him from under his up B to help him reach the stage. The Wolf goes diving for me since I had to go in PK THUNDER 2 DEEP, but I land a PK Thunder 2 THROUGH HIM right before he would have KO'd me. He still can recover, so my brother and I respect his recovery and wait on the other side. The Wolf gets up and shoots me.

HOLY SNAP I AM NOW OVER 200% AS NESS! I AM A BOMB WAITING TO BLOW!!!

The Wolf lands a sweet aerial on me and whacks me away on the left side, but my brother grabs him and up throws him. My brother then gets another grab on him and up throws him right as I'm doing my PK Thunder. My brother up throws him, and I land another PK Thunder 2.

WE HAVE TROUBLES LANDING THAT AGAINST CPU'S AND I JUST LANDED THAT LIKE OUT OF A TEXTBOOK I DIDN'T READ!!!

So the Wolf then is hit hard, but counters by smacking my brother wayyyy off stage. I just got on stage. For 5 seconds or so it's down to him and me. Me and him. The guy who wrecked me all set long, KO'd me 5 times, and me, the guy who is hot, but lost 5 stocks, is half of the opponents' moves away from being finished, and is LIVING ON A PRAYER!

He does a dash dance to double wavedash fake into a shine that I saw coming. I read it, and I start REALLY FEELING IT. I go grab > down throw > nAir > fAir > read a tech into a grounded dAir. At this moment my brother gets back on stage, and I nAir both of them, which sends them both a distance.

At this moment, I make a prediction based off reads. My opponent wants a 1v1 badly, and he probably still figures he can take me out easy (and he's probably right), so I figure he'll go for a bAir KO on my brother. Knowing this, I go into the deep beyond past the point of no return off the stage, and right as he starts up his bAir and lands it on my brother, I swoop down and dAir him for a KO.

BOOM! MATCH OVER! "DO YOU BELIEVE IN MIRACLES? YES!"

Our opponents are respectful, but in utterly shock. The 20 or so people watching were ecstatic and congratulated me and my brother. I gave all the credit to him (because he didn't die 5 times, only 1 time), and he was the reason we won the last set.

MY FEELS WERE INSANE. We did the BRO HUG OUT, which was awesome. I COULDN'T BELIEVE IT! I was a part of something I thought was essentially impossible in a Smash game: a comeback from 5 stocks down as a team. I didn't quit (I considered it), I didn't stop moving, and I did it on the stage this happened. I felt more hyped than THIS GUY!!!

All in all I had the last 7 KO's of the match, I took about 250% more damage than anyone else, and I lost 1 more stock than anyone else, and yet I STILL MANAGED TO CLUTCH OUT HOPE WHEN THERE WAS NONE AND I GOT THAT VICTORY!!!

When people ask me why I love team matches, why I love teaming with my brother, why I love Fountain of Dreams (it makes dreams come true!), why I stick to Ness in Project M (and any Smash game in general), and/or even why I love Project M, I tell them about that freaking match. It's never the wrong answer.

F is for friends who do stuff together!
U is for you and me!
N is for anywhere and anytime at all!
Down here in the Smash Community!

The reason I work so hard to improve my skill is to make the game more interesting to play against other people. Some could learn from me, others are an even match to me, and anyone else provides a challenge for me to overcome. It's the people you play with that make Smash interesting!

Because I actually enjoy putting effort into a game where that effort will be amply rewarded in terms of fundamentals, enhanced play, etc.

Also Ike is good now and is the second video game character to have captured my ideal playstyle of rushdown burst movement CQC really well. (The first being Vanguard Commander Shepard from Mass Effect 2).
