Smash Ace
A thought has loomed in the recesses of my mind for a long time now: Why do we have any reason for liking the characters we main or like? They obviously are not rooted in reality. They have absolutely no benefit for us, yet no matter what character-oriented game we play, it seems as if we gravitate toward certain characters. For example, I know someone who liked Marth in Brawl, I know someone who liked Pit in Brawl, I know someone who liked Ice Climbers in Brawl, and I know someone who liked King Dedede in Brawl (). These characters are incredibly different in their playstyles, and coincidentally, the people I am thinking of are behaviourally quite contrasting.
This ,among other things I noticed (and shall not speak of here), leads me to wonder if there is some kind of psychological dynamic that governs our preferences for certain characters, even to the point of predisposing a player to like who they main. I was wondering what others thought about character gameplay attraction. Are there some genuine, background elements of our psyche that are chiefly responsible for our favorites?
