timing is different. you land slower when you hit something. as far as i'm aware.

-empty aerial (you dont hit anything) would be no delay in landing
-hitting somebody is a little slower landing
-hitting a shielded opponent is even slower landing

adding more bodies and shields (like the ice climbers) delays your landing which could be throwing off your timing. i practiced a couple ways personally. one way is with a level 1 bowser with 9 handicap and spam dair/nair shine on him until i got the timing. i also used boxes, turn on stars set it to max and try to dair/nair shine the boxes. once i got the hang of it i try to get consistent by seeing how many aerials i could put out in a minute.

its a matter of timing and practice

Someone (I forget who) used 3 level 1 ice climbers on yoshi's story to practice. You get a really wide range of different timings since there are so many ice climbers to hit.

Just remember that you L-cancel just before hitting the ground and at no other time. If you are going to be in the air longer than expected, then try to make sure you don't press it to early. Spamming makes it not work, so don't do that.

The Bowser method that Naughty mentioned is a really good way of practicing and it's how I learned. Also, and this is something I've noticed from being a rookie around Smashboards, if there's something that you can't seem to get right, pretty much all the advice people are gonna give you is that you just need to practice. It's frustrating but also really true.

^ You don't need to delete it, just leaving this is a good history record. You can always edit your first post to prevent this from getting necro'ed. :p

This is incorrect. You can spam the z button, the l button, the r button as much as you like at any point before hitting the ground and the l-cancel will register.

Teching is the thing that you can't spam for. Spamming the button grants you a tech within 20 frames, and if you haven't hit a techable surface yet, then you are locked out of being able to tech for 40 more frames after the first 20.

Cool! I thought it was for both. Thanks for the clarification.
