I know it's a bit early to be thinking about, especially since there's no DLC in the works, but whay characters would be DLC?

I can see 4 categories

1. Missing Veterans
This one speaks for itself and as we've seen before missing characters are always favorites for comebacks (except Pichu). Any character missing, either still from Melee or dropped, would sell well.

2. Semi-Clones
More about the logistics and balance, DLC clones of existing characters, such as a third Link, Black Shadow to Falcon or yet another Star Fox Member. I'm not a fan of this but it would make for quicker development and make balancing easier.

3. Complete Newcomers
The most desired. Naturally it comes with it's problems but nothing says hype like a completely new character.

4. 3rd party
As Isaac Clarke in Playstation All-Stars showed us, it is possible to get more companies characters in after release. Naturally this would have the licencing to grapple with. Another option could be expanding the roster of existing third parties to have, say, Tails, Knuckles, Protoman or Big Boss. Sakurai said doesn't want to put too much focus on third parites though. This is about Nintendo Character pounding the snot out of each other.

Anyone they wanted to do but didn't have time for before the deadline.

I'd love an awesome pack about 3 years into Smash's life with like, 10 characters added in to keep it fresh while I wait for the next full installment. Whether it be characters he had to cut for logistics reasons, or some more obscure wanted characters it wouldn't be bad. I secretly want Lolo in the game and wouldn't wind seeing him show up somehow for example.

And for that third party mention, PSAS really in the end was an advertisement fest. Isaac had his game coming out, so they threw him in to get people looking at. Kinda like MANY of the PSAS cast. While I could see other third parties maybe trying to jump on and get in the game, how many would Sakurai actually WANT to add?

Ridley. Sakurai finally gets tired of us after the games release and throws us a bone.

This. It would help get people excited all over again, and it would just be awesome.

First I want them to do their best to incorporate everything they want in the game.
Then the first DLC would be things they weren't able of implementing because of time constraints. Maybe free.
Subsequent DLCs would be characters/stages/costumes that Sakurai and the community want that weren't planned during the development process of the game. Probably paid.

I don't think free dlc should exist unless a game is incomplete or the people making the game messed up pretty badly in some way (see Mass Effect 3). Since I doubt this will be the case with a smash brothers game, I don't want any free dlc. They should get paid for that effort.

Or the game get released and isn't done so the put out DLC for extra cash ala PSAS. Our first free "DLC" was supposed to be in the game to start, and now costs cash. DLC is VERY easy to botch up I just hope if nintendo does it they do it right.

I hope they do it right too. But saying it like this seems vaguely similar to saying to a new gf, "I hope you aren't a lying ***** too!" As far as I know Nintendo hasn't botched DLC to date, so why should we think they would start now? I'm not saying it's impossible, I just don't think it is nice to suggest they may, when they've done a good job so far.

Have they ever done it for a fighting game though? I dont know if any company has gotten fighting DLC right, it's why I'm worried even nintendo could botch it somehow.

Ah, but Sakurai himself said it isn't a fighting game though, so no worries. :p

Yes I realize that doesn't mean anything.

Doesn't the WiiU system have like 25gigs? I highly doubt DLC will even be available, it is Nintendo afterall...

Size isn't the issue. Time is. And if Nintendo/Sakurai seemingly have no idea if there will be dlc, then I doubt you have a more educated guess on the matter. They are new to dlc, but they are starting to use it.

True, they are. In fact, New Super Luigi U is probably one of the best uses of (paid) DLC I've heard of in recent times.

As for my thoughts, I believe that most DLC should just be relegated to stuff they didn't have enough time to finish in the first place. I also think DLC shouldn't start being released until a month after the game has been out. Because, as far as I'm concerned, Day 1 DLC makes zero amount of sense (unless it is free). Why didn't you just put it on the disc?
