Who should I main?

Hey, I'm 13, and I'm new to smash boards. I've been playing Smash (Brawl) since I was 4, And started taking it seriously about 3 years back. I just started playing melee about 5 months ago and I want to get really good at it over time. However, I keep switching around mains. I want to settle on 1, and just 1. I can wave dash constantly and do most basic tech skill, and I play A LOT, since I have so much spare time. So, any suggestions? Please make it top 6, and not Sheik. Anyone but Sheik, I'm begging you. I consider myself a hot/cold player, since I wait for opponents to make mistakes and then try to combo them. Also, I like playing of the ledge. I take a lot of risks, and adapt to my opponents.

It took me a while until I figured out my main, so here's some advice to
A. Help determine who you should main and
B. Who I think, based on the information given, you should main.
Also what's with the Sheik hate

I started my search for a main by playing Target Smash. Why? Because each stage requires you to really test out every element and move of every character to their full potential. Young Link's stage teaches you about his projectile game, JigglyPuff about her jumps/floatiness, Ness and his PK moves, etc. Disclaimer, however, not all of them are truly representative or will teach you anything about the character, but it's a training course to figure that thing out. I didn't know I liked Sheik until I tried her Target Smash.
Another thing to try is to just do some 1v1s with characters you're interested in against mid level bots and see how they feel. Finally, watch some tutorials and videos. I picked up Falco as a secondary solely because of PPMD's awesome Falco. SSBM Tutorials also has a really good series rating and recommending mains ( solely top 6 you tier ***** ;) ).

Personally, the description you provided sounds mostly like a Captain Falcon main, because of his weak neutral game making him rely on A. Capitalizing heavily on enemy mistakes B. High Risk High Reward offstage play and C. Requires getting into the mind of your opponent to really rank nicely. Plus he's super fun.

Top 6?

Fox, Falco, (not) Sheik, Jigglypuff, Marth, and Peach

No go practice in training mode and against other human players. Return to this thread only when/after you figured out who your best is on your own. Only you can figure it out

Tbh, your main now may change in a matter of months. Depends how you progress and the players in your region. Abate was a Falco /Falcon main before getting beat by Vudujin. Then he switches Luigi. At your stage it might be better to just ride Fox for how ever long it lasts. But keep an open mind about it. From your description, Fox, Falco, Falcon, Peach, all the way to Pika and Luigi might be for you. But as Epsilon said, only you know who you want to main.

Naw bro it wasn't vudujin, abate said it was some other player, a falco I think. Anyways I digress. If you're a tier queer and you want ledge game, get the wobbuffet out of your 13yo ass and go sheik. We all know you want too (;

Hope this helps and play me on the ladder: jonnnnnnnn (8 'n's)

Thanks guys. I'll stick to fox for now, just played for like 3 hours. But I'll keep an open mind.

You say that like being young is a bad thing, but you really just wish you had started melee earlier in life.

Don't worry, you'll quickly realize that a "tier-*****" isn't even a valid insult. Its pretty much only used by scrubs/casuals.

Keeping an open mind is definitely a good idea. Above all, you want to choose a character than you enjoy and feels natural, in my opinion. I know I switched mains about a dozen times before eventually settling on Falco/Sheik, and having the experience of "test driving" most of the other characters really helped assure me that my choice was the right one for me.

I thought Abate lost to Vudujin, so he decided to try to learn Luigi. The Falco was beating him, so he decided to try Luigi as a joke and managed to win or something like that.

You should pick the character you feel most comfortable with. You chose fox now but if you do doubt again i suggest you to just play some friendlies with all top 6 chracters and then pick the one you like the most.

Meh. I personally found Marth to fit that playstyle, as I play heavily around the edge and capitalize off one grab. Fits what you want IMO, but i could be reading it wrong. plus getting a Ken combo feels oh so nice.

Marth is great for what you are looking for, Marth and Fox complement eachother greatly.
