Why don't you just try every character and pick the ones you like.

I have, but they all feel kinda weird to me, as I'm a Brawl player. I'm just trying to get some solid recommended characters, as I've used em all before but Roy and Lucario kinda transfer over because I main them in Melee/Brawl respectively.

Use all the characters not once nor twice but many times each, get to know them, youll sooner discover your best, now if you main lucario roy, zelda i would say is a good third choice, or someone more defensive like ness snake

What style of gameplay do you prefer? Do you prefer the rushdown style of Fox or Falco? How about the calculated style of Marth, constantly perfecting your spacing? The continuous barrage of long-range projectiles that are the core meta of Samus?

well, question one: are you a tier *****? (be honest)

if yes: pick ivy, mario, mewtwo, etc...

if not: well, it gets more complicated. what style do you enjoy playing, etc...

I challenged myself to go across the roster one character per day, using each day's character at least five games in a row. For the most part, it just reminded me which characters I totally suck with, but it also helped me remember how fun Pikachu is, and thus influenced me picking him as (at least a temporary) PM main. Of course, doing that would take 41 days if you take it a character per day.

I'd say just pick your three favorite characters and learn them regardless, and then pick two more that offer contrasting playstyles (and thus, are sensitive to different matchups and stage preferences) to learn as well. Diversifying your abilities can give you fallbacks if you have a hard time against certain characters or on certain stages.

The more you play the longer you'll understand a character more then the rest. You can play literally the whole cast but there's only gonna be 1 character maybe 2 that your gonna play better then the rest.

Just play whoever you enjoy the most. If it isn't your best character, why not make if your best? Or, perhaps, as an example, maybe you main Marth, but you really enjoy playing as Yoshi. You could pick up both, and practice with them equally until you're great with both. Or like what everyone else said, find one that fits your playstyle.

I'm thinking I'll pick up Mario and maybe get used to PM Lucas. Sonic is another one I've tried and liked.

I just recently started playing PM and came to the same question, all I did was play the character whose move set combined well with my play style and it was Tink. Although I don't use him the way most others do. Anyways my suggestion out of all this is play who you want because the way you play defines you not your character, if your good with Wario then ****ing play Wario.

Try out all of the characters for a bit. You are bound to like one of them
