Since I am going to start entering tournaments, I need a wider variety of character choices. I am pretty good with Yoshi and Luigi, but I don't think that they can get me that far in tournies by themselves. I was thinking of maining a new character. I was testing Fox, Link, and Samus, and I sorta liked how they played. Who do you think I should main, and please tell me why, so I know how to practice with them.

Note: I am okay at advanced techs. I can wavedash, but not as fast as most other people. I can shffl, crouch cancel, and edge guard pretty well though.

Thanks for any replies.

Out of the three you mentioned, Fox is the most competitive. But you should use whoever you're most comfortable with.

use your favorite character. scrubs pick up characters for the sake of doing well in tournaments, but there are plenty of talented players out there who don't care about the competition and like to have fun. that is a much better "no johns" attitude than win-hungry tier-whores.

yoshi and luigi eh? there are plenty of good yoshi and luigi players out there who do great in tournaments. just gotta find some videos to help you out. if you have problems with certain characters, then that's when you pick up secondaries to cover 'em.

if you don't really have a favorite then tier-whoring is your best bet xD

yoshi is probably one of the worst characters to use in tournaments, since fox and falco are the most common opponents you will face, yoshi will get *****, luigi isn't the greatest choice for them, low tier tournaments they're great, but normal ones they're not the greatest since they luigi only really match-ups ok against peach and yoshi does decent on marth, but that's not good, use both but try to keep a high tier character to back you up, preferbly fox or falco, falco is much easier to use than fox, so it won't be tough to pick him up, basically with him learn to SHL and waveshine and you're pretty much set

i suggest marth and sheik. wont require too much tech skill, and are good for counter picking your opponent. for matches that yoshi and luigi do bad in, switch to marth or sheik.

Thanks for the replies! I will probably toy with Fox more, since I really liked how I played with him. I will still continue to use Yoshi in tournies, even though he might get ***** lol. I think I'll use Fox against higher tiers, Luigi against some high tiers, and Yoshi against Middle and low tiers, I've used Luigi and Yoshi the longest, so I think I will use them more.
Thanks again!

Yea, seriously, play whoever you like in tournies. If you like Yoshi and Luigi, then play with them. Don't worry about the tiers. If you REALLY just wanna win the tourny, I suggest picking up Falco, because he's easier to learn then Fox (read "because I'm a Falco and this is shameless recruiting").

Honestly though, if you want to have fun enter with your Yoshi or Luigi. If they are good, many players won't be prepared for them. You never know what might happen.

Thanks, that pretty much solved my problem. I think I will use Falco to warm up to Fox, because I think I will like Fox, but I really haven't decided yet.

I'm suggesting you go Sheik, because, truthfully, she's a somewhat easy character to learn, counters a lot of characters, goes even against a few, and does bad against very few. She comboes well, is pretty fast, and has a good grab range. Fox can do all that, sure, but the effort needed to get to that level is a lot more than the effort needed for Sheik, and since it's your secondary, you will need something that's faster to learn. Although, if you like playing Fox, by all means go for it.

I don't know that Falco is really a warmup to fox. Falco has a particularly easy short hop, while fox's is difficult. If you intend to use Fox in the long run, just start using him now.

Like some have been saying, you could probably learn marth or sheik pretty easily, and they're just good characters to know how to use. But you should stick with you favourite characters, who cares about matchups if you have to use a character you don't like. I would choose my facourite character over a statistically superior character anyday.

some of the people talkin falco is easy how? dont listem to everyone pick up fox or falco if the whole reason your even playing this game is to go pro and win tournies. but like some said if you like usin luigi and yoshi and your good then keep them.

i would prefer falco since a very skilled falco has a much easier time not sayin fox doesnt either but imo falco is slightly better against what your going to be losing most to and thats high tier characters that also gives fox a run for his money so go falco.

many people on here think that flaco is easy are saying that cuz they dont know what they are doing they learn to shffl and oick up wd and they think there pro. isnt easy as long as your not the best player with him you dont get the rights to say at all now do you.

i think that you should main as samus, because of all of her projectiles and she has she has a super wavedash etc. but you could use Fox or Falco. it wouldn't matter though.
