In my quest to keep myself entertained with PM until Smash 4 and simultaneously prepare myself for All-Star Versus mode, I'm trying to pick up some new characters. I've noticed that I play PM pretty aggressively, which seems kind of unusual since I'm mainly a Brawl player. I think I might be overcompensating for the mechanics changes, or maybe G&W just isn't good at being defensive in PM. I'm finding it hard to play patient even when I want to. So I think it'd be a good idea for me to try to pick up a defensive character, someone who forces me to hang back and think about what my opponent is doing. I already sort of play Zelda, but who else is there?

Samus is a good option, good set of projectiles, can space with z-air, good set of grounded attacks which combined with wavedash movement are pretty good.

Samus, Zelda & Ivysaur are the most defensive in my opinion (in that order as well).

Samus, has her projectiles and zair camp, and to add insult to injury she dies at extremely high percents and can recover from anywhere. She is pretty much a pure defensive character.

Zelda, has Din's Fire to trap people and to position your opponent where you want them to be. All the while being able to teleport across stages to capitalize in those situations. And her neutral B is a go to option for characters that manage to get in, but capitalize sloppily.

Ivysaur, can be offensively oriented but to my experience she performs much better from being defensive. She has great range on many of her attacks, and also has a projectile defensive/approach option in razor leaf. Her down B can catch approaching opponents and can also stuff characters that are very high above her. She has tools for every situation. Let's not forget the more defensive you are, the longer the match draws out. As the match goes on you're constantly building SolarBeam up which is basically one less stock for your opponent if you're accurate.

Notice, they're all female characters. Peach is also another amazingly defensive character (what do you know another female....).

Ice Climbers can be one!
I tried out Ice Climbers. They just seem bad at everything. Maybe I'm just bad at them, but I can play them decently in Brawl without knowing how to chaingrab.

Thanks for the opinions, guys. I think I'll try out Samus and probably stick with Zelda too.

Nobody has mentioned Link. There are players who only use projectiles for damage and only use the sword to counteract someone who has gotten close enough.

He can make so many hitboxes on the stage that the other player has to dodge to approach, and when they do get close enough, his sword is long enough to do marth/roy style spacing.

That's the Ice climbers for you. They have like, no really way to get in. At all. That and the fact that nana is controlled by 1 frame inputs makes them... not so good, at anything, really.
