White controller from Smashboards?

My controllers are from 2002 and I need replacements, I was wondering how the white controllers on Smashboards (amazon) perform and if they're worth it.

I mainly play Project M and learned tech on melee a while ago, so something standard that most of this scene uses.

They are great. Buy one, they are first party controllers imported from Japan. The only difference between them and your old controllers is that the new ones aren't worn out, and they have a ten-foot cord.

I ordered one and it was perfect until my cat bit through the wire.

A friend of mine got one and it had issues with the rubber on both the C-Stick and the regular joystick. He just pulled the rubber off the joystick (not a big deal unless you're afraid of cutting your thumb a bit, I've been playing like that for years), and just tries to be careful with the C-Stick. Everything else works fine.

I've got two of them. Cord gets kinda annoying because it's so long so I gotta take one of those industrial size plastic tie things and cut down the length of the cord by half.

Other than that, 10/10 would get two more again if they were cheaper.

The fit is a bit different and the shoulder buttons, including z, feel like it takes a different amount of pressure to push. I think I hear more sound when I push buttons. It also doesn't have that extra smooth feel the original GC had. Aside from that, I can't complain. It's a good buy. Not sure how they will compare to the smash 4 controllers comin out.

Thats when you take the shell of your old controllers and put the inside of the white one in it =3

The white controllers don't have a metal bar in the L and R buttons to make sure they go down straighter so SOME controllers are really and hard and friction-ey to press when you don't press them strait down. (At an angle) This is caused by plastic on plastic friction inside of the button. (Inside of the actual gray buttons there are these tube-like things that holds the spring and make it match up with the other half of the button and that's where all of the friction comes from) This greatly affects wavedashings and makes it really annoying when trying to wavedash or L cancel. What I ended up doing was taking apart an old controller that has a bad stick and I replaced the inner half of the L and R buttons. (So I still had my newer exterior buttons :smirk:) I have seen some that press fine but I'm sure after A LOT of use the bad ones will get better.

I bought a white one like two weeks ago and its pretty dope. Definitely worth it if you need a controller.

I bought one to play Project M with specifically about half a year ago, and it's going strong. It didn't take long to break in, and after I did, it's remained consistent. You should buy one while they're on sale. $35 is a hell of a deal.

I've been able to pull off insanely technical stuff with the white controller. Plus, the white controller has a 3-meter cord.

They don't ship to Canada though do they? Disappointing... I might buy one and get it shipped to my cousins place across the border. My silver controller's rubber on the main analog came off (broken supports). I want to replace that with a new rubber grip, no idea where to get one from. Putting it on again accurately would be an issue too (getting all those small rubber sticking out bits into the holes on the plastic analog... Ugh).

Thanks guys, yea i just ordered one, it arrives Thursday. Just gonna get a feel for it myself, I'll probably give my 2 cents about it.

If anything, it HAS to be better than what I have now. My controllers are so old that I can feel the accuracy of the inputs slipping, sometimes, the left stick or the l+r buttons stick or won't release instantly, so it became increasingly hard to drop shield or pivot grab and stuff like that.

NOTE: Copy pasta from another thread.
I want to take this time to fully endorse this particular white controller, especially for those of you who have a worn-in/faulty controller, or if you just want one for parts. I worry that mine will eventually die, so I bought two, just in case they happened to be decent. Here's my take:

NOTE: My hands are massive, and devoid of hand-fat. I hold the controller with index fingers wrapping up along the curve across the top, with index tip/first knuckle in the center of the cups of the L/R triggers. Rest of the fingers rest naturally along the back of the handles. I gently "pinch" the controller laterally at the tops of the handles, just below the raised portion that houses left analog/face buttons. These left and right sections of the controller rest directly between the index and middle knuckle of the palm flesh. If you don't hold the controller the way I do, your results/preference may vary.

This thing feels incredibly good. I saw some bad reviews on the amazon page, and was really worried I might get a controller with a super-loose analog stick, faulty buttons, etc. Imagine my surprise when I wrap my mitts around this beauty.

One of the features I always take note of is left analog stick stiffness. The data I was given back in 2005 was "stiffness, from stiff to loose: platinum > black > indigo > spice." To clarify, this assumes a similar level of wear on controllers used in any test/sample (all of them are new in packaging, or all of them have been [ab]used for 800-1000 hours). Even today, my two platinum sticks are noticeably stiffer than the two black ones. I have a strong preference to a stiff analog stick.

Now, it's been years since I touched a GameCube analog stick fresh out of the packaging, but the one on this white gamecube controller I just opened is quite rigid, which I prefer. Not so stiff that it squeeks, but definitely higher resistance than the two platinum models I've owned. C-stick is slightly less rigid, but I believe this has been consistent across controller revisions. C-stick also has a nice texture to it, similar to the surface of a dualshock analog stick, but finer (I can't recall whether new-in-box GameCube controllers featured this back in the day).

L and R triggers feel identical in springiness, but the click sensation at the bottom feels extremely tight compared to my black/platinum. To phrase it another way, the amount of pressure needed to depress the triggers until they "click" feels demonstrably higher.

A B X and Y buttons feel absolutely the same, D-pad feels like garbage (I have never touched a D-pad on any GameCube controller that didn't), but curiously, the start button has slightly more resistence than my old controllers, *and* it has a texture to it. Again, first fresh GameCube controller in almost a decade, so I don't remember if Start had a texture.

Finally, the Z button has a more pronounced click when depressed, and feels less spongy than the older ones, probably a difference in wear.

So there you have it. Whether you're on the fence about them, or just mildly curious, I hope my breakdown is useful for purchase reinforcement, or at least some debate fodder.
