Which Requires More Skill?

Me and my dad often argue over game design (He believes story is more important than gameplay.) and recently, we have been arguing about smash bros. He started playing against me and got mad because I knocked him off the edge and he sucks so he didn't recover in time. He started to argue that the ledges make the game not require skill. I told him he just needs to recover, but he said that since He's playing as Robin, it's harder.
What should I say to shut down his arguments without him getting mad and grounding me?

#1: Robin's recovery range, when NOT edgeguarded and out of Wind Tome uses, is above average. Certainly above those of :4littlemac:, :4cloud:, and :4feroy:, that's for sure. If his/her recovery range is not enough for him, then maybe folks like :4kirby:, :4dedede:, :4pit:/:4darkpit:, :4rob:, or especially :4villager: would be worth repping.

If either of you have played Melee, then have either of you brought up how brutal its ledge system can be against those trying to recover? From what I've seen of tournament-level SSBM matches over the years, once the edgeguarder's grabbed the ledge, the person trying to recover is usually going to fall down the Drop Zone, since the edgeguarder can just press :GCRT: to safely roll onto the stage with its invincibility frames while somehow completely denying the person trying to recover any hope of grabbing onto the ledge, the moment that said recovering person draws near to the ledge. I'm personally GLAD that Smash 4's ledges don't work that way, since that means that folks can stick around a LOT longer, leading to increased chances of mid-round runbacks occurring. In fact, this tutorial vid can help explain this:

Plus, if either of you are okay with using Custom Equipment, then maybe equipping Gluey Edge badges can help, since they increase the range you have for grabbing the ledge, provided you have any badges with such an ability on them. If not, then try either cranking up either the defense (obviously, this = staying on the stage longer at higher percents) or speed (increases overall movement speed & distance) stats of a character.

Sounds similar to my brother, he says ledges ruin the game on these stages and it lessens the fun. He plays Little Mac. And doesn't know how to jump (despite telling him how muitiple times.). I just play on Wii Fit Studio when playing with him.

But anyway, when in doubt, listen to ZeRo.

I'd reccomend getting better parents, first of all.
He probably should realise that his behaviour is exactly the kind of behaviour we players of the game disapprove of and some of us even ridicule it.
You should probably teach him offstage options to avoid edgeguards and how to properly recover.

I'm more jealous of the fact that he has a dad that'd even play smash with him.

I'm trying to get my dad into Smash now that he was fired politely asked out of his job and probably has nothing better to do for the rest of his life.
He kinda has a thing against fighting games, though, since he convinced himself long ago that Fighting games somehow killed Beat 'em Ups. Maybe I should start by playing Brawl's SSE with him. Yes, Brawl, not PM's, I'd reckon Brawl is easier to play than a game with Melee physics.
