Which characters are worth paying for?

Let’s say Smash was set up this way— you pay $5.99 to unlock each character. So to play the game, it’s only $5.99, but you’ll only have one character available to you. If you want more characters, you’ll pay $5.99 each. Or if you buy 5 or more characters all at once, then the price gets reduced to $5 per each. How much would you spend (if anything) under this setup? Who (if anybody) would you purchase? (Only choose among confirmed characters, please.)

Would be pointless honestly. Paying over 200 dollars to unlock everyone isn’t really going to help sell the game on its own

Most people would just buy Sonic, Ganondorf, their preferred choice of Link, a Marth derivative, Samus or Wolf. You might spot Zelda occasionally.

The rest of the cast don't matter in this scenario because they aren't as oppressive on bad netcode, and tournaments would just use a single console with every character unlocked.

Gross.

But who would you buy if that were the pricing system for this game? (If anybody.)

The first Smash Bros. had 12 characters. How much did it cost when it came out?

Under Wayneright’s thoughts, though, it sounds like Smash Ultimate would only cost $25 for most people. A lot cheaper than $60.

Let’s say you can play *against* non-purchased characters online or in classic or adventure mode, but you can’t play *as* them in any mode or against them in just-on-your-own-console Smash mode.

That’s a poor argument to compare 64 to buy 11 characters. Let’s not forget to mention that the 64 smash is CHEAPER than making a roster of the original 12.

I mean, not to mention, the NES console upon release was $180. For poorly saturated, linear, 8 bit games. The market, and its available technology, was considerably different.

So is everyone here's personal answer to just not buy anybody if that was how Nintendo released Smash Ultimate?

I wouldn’t buy the game if this model was used since I find it to be pretty predatory (roughly $400 for the whole roster, and some people are completionists), but If I was forced to, I’d just buy :ulticeclimbers: and maybe :ultness: for being my favorites to play as.
