I've recently started playing Melee, as Brawl got me into the SSB games. I had the N64 Smash when I was a child as well, so it's not that I'm new to the combat system. I just wanted to know, more in depth, about which buttons people use for each input. Is there a certain system I should be using? I'll give a list of what I'm questioning.

L-Canceling - L
Aerials - A
Wave Dashing - X + R
Jumping - X (I try to avoid tap jump)
I also use dashing + Down on Control stick to Side smash on C Stick

Should I be using one trigger for L Canceling and the other for Shield? I didn't know if its just personal preference, or is there's some sort of system I don't know about.

As for aerials, should I be using the C Stick for SHFFL'd Airs?

Thanks! :)

1.) Use what's comfortable.
2.) Again, use what's comfortable.
3.) Answers #1 and #2 don't apply to c-stick. Always use c-stick for aerials so that you can control your aerial momentum better.

You use my button layout if you also use R to shield.

Does input from the c stick really affect the aerial momentum more efficiently?

Using the c-stick allows your momentum/DI and your attack direction to stay separate. So you can retreating Fair, or rising Dair, or what have you.

Really yes, there are like 5 things in this game that are easier to do with A
Then there's about 10,000 things that are easier to do with the c-stick

Also I would wavedash and shield with different triggers. Using Y is slightly better than X and makes things like double laser with Fox or double laser from the ledge with Falco easier. It doesn't really matter though but using Y is just like 5% easier, I believe PP said he uses X and his lasers are perfect so yeah.

Ya, try to do a falling up-air when you still have your second jump without using the c-stick.

I use Y. X is overall a little worse, but not by much. Y is closer to the B button, and due to the way your thumb moves, it is less movement to hit the C-stick from Y than it is from X.

I still use A for some aerials - like second jump into an aerial right away is easier with A than the C-stick due to distance - but I mostly use the C-stick.

I use L for shielding mostly, but I still use R sometimes (no idea, it just come naturally to use the other sometimes), but I use R for basically everything else: air dodge, L-cancel, wavedash, waveland, teching, and roll from the ledge.

As someone who completely converted to the c-stick for like a year or two after just using A before, I've found myself using A for more and more things these days. Doing fast aerials immediately out of your jump is just so much easier and makes your combos much more fluid. You have a crazy amount of control over your aerial movement even when you use A as long as you just practice a bit (you can still do reverse fairs and such).

Overall I'd say c-stick is better when doing aerials off of platforms and stuff, but I think you're really deceiving him by says its that much better (as a person who has used both techniques for a while).

In terms of Marth of players, Ken does not use the stick for anything except f-smash and falling U-Airs from platform, and Mango does not use the c-stick for any character. Just mess around with stuff and figure out what works for you
