Where's the variety?

It's sad almost. I've owned this game since release and I'm about ready to put down the online For Glory mode. It's so stale because of the lack of variety of opponents. It's Marth, Link, Diddy, Capt. Falcon and Fox. Sometimes I'll see a Sonic or a Mario. I've yet to encounter a Metaknight, Charizard, Rosalina, or Pacman. I main Bowser and I think I've seen maybe 1 or 2 others.

What gives? I get it's For Glory mode, but are people deliberately only picking "high tier" characters they're guaranteed a win with? If so, I guess I was wrong about the online community on a Nintendo platform. Kinda expected a higher caliber (this is the first Ninty game I've played online.)

I will say, there is an unusual amount of "high tier" characters being played online, but the interesting thing is, when I played as Ike, I almost never fought against one. When I started playing more as Captain Falcon, I suddenly ran into a lot of other Ike players...I think the game has a weird way of pairing players up, I don't think it's completely random. That being said, online is still being dominated by the high tier characters because people don't care about playing the game, they care about their win rates. It's a ****ty reason, but I'm afraid it's the truth.

Lying about my country.
If people were choosing "high tier" characters on purpose, those would most certainly not be the characters you'd see the most.

If you don't enjoy For Glory due to a lack of variety, try playing with friends, or look for one of those fancy Smash groups with leaderboards and ****.

It's called "For Glory" for a reason. People play to win, picking the best characters nets you that advantage.

Those are definitely not "high tier characters" (barring Diddy/Sonic/and maybe Fox). In FG you usually do encounter the same pool of characters to the point of staleness, so try your luck elsewhere (Anther's Ladder is a good option) or play offline. Each of my friends pretty much main a different character. You'd also have to realize that a lot of Nintendo's audience are kids/newbs so they see whichever character gets played the most and follow with that.

:confused:I'm starting to get a theory that the matchmaking used may be per character used by a player instead of just per player, as I've been seeing better (mostly) opponents when I play my main Ike compared to playing others, like my secondary Link. It may also explain why I haven't had much of a staleness issue, as I've seen a decent variety of players. Some are obviously more liked than others, but the big 5 I see more often seems to change from week to week. Used to see Mac and Roselina all the time, now not so much.

I can understand the frusteration of not seeing more matchup variety though. The one time I fought a Ganondorf online and he wrecked me due to me not knowing much about the matchup beyond the info on the forum (the old adage about book smarts comes to mind) and fighting the CPU. I'd like more practice against dorf, but I don't see him enough to get it.

It's For Glory. People are playing to win, so they pick characters that they think will help them win.

The caveat being that this is frequently influenced by characters with what the players perceive as "easy" strategies. You see lots of [Toon] Link because casual players can't handle projectile spam and dair. You see lots of Sonic because spindash>aerial is a straightforward and rewarding gameplan. You see lots of Captain Falcon because high reward per hit and fast speed bode well in an environment with input lag, etc.

For giggles, what's probably the top 5 characters I've seen most often across ~2200 For Glory matches:
1. :4falcon:
2. :4link:
3. :4mario:
4. :4sonic:
5. :4zss:

Honorable mentions for least-seen character go to Meta Knight, at a whopping three opponents (two of which switched off to Captain Falcon after losing). It was Olimar until recently, though!

Shoutouts to release Macs.

If you want to play games with more variety, try playing for fun. I see a lot more variety in that most as opposed to for glory

I see more C. Falcons, Little Macs, and Marths than anything else.

I see mostly Links, Little Macs and Captain Falcons.

There are a good number of Marths and Toon Links as well.

Toon Link and Little Mac I've been seeing a decent number of. Fought my first Captain Falcon in a long while, and was good fun. (Laggy though). I realized that I've been rusty with my Little Mac Match Up. I'll need some more practice so I can get back to smashing the lazy ones out the ring again.
