I've been playing Ness for 8 years (since shortly after smash 64 came out) , and for the first time, I'm really starting to fear that he won't be returning in Brawl. Until today, Sakurai had only been posting about characters that were either already confirmed or were obvious (OMFG!! DK IS CONFIRMED!!!! No crap. Yoshi, Bowser, and Zelda, too? Well, I'll be). I was really hoping that Ness would be confirmed this week, seeing as the 8 starters from smash 64 have all been confirmed. In the event that Ness wasn't confirmed, I imagined that I'd see either Snake, Meta Knight, or one of the other three hidden characters in smash 64 go up. I never thought I'd see a brand new character, and it's really got me scared.

Really though, the reason I'm making this post is to find out not what your opinion is on whether or not Ness SHOULD return, but whether or not he WILL return. When Sakurai said not all characters are returning, was he only talking about the clones, but left it ambiguous to get us all excited? Will all of the characters from melee return, and Sakurai just said they won't to get more hype going for the game (I mean, really, we'd clearly be "stoked" as Reggie put it, but the smash community wouldn't seem as excited if we weren't hanging on every character announcement, and I'm pretty sure that Sakurai is using our excitement to build excitement outside of our community. He could easily cover it up later and say "well, the response to that statement was so great, that I decided to go ahead and include all of the characters from melee!")? Do you think, though all of the characters will not return, that the original twelve are safe? Is the original lineup from Melee safe? The question is this: Do you think Ness WILL return, regardless of your personal opinion on him? (Though I'm focusing on Ness, this thread kind of applies to Falcon, Jiggly, and Luigi as well, but I'm pretty sure they're returning, whether anyone likes it or not.)

He's an origional. Kicking Ness is like Kicking Jiggly or Capt. Falcon.

and they haven't put either of their names in the concrete

I personally think that the fact he confirmed Ike instead of Marth means Marth is out. This makes me think that Ness will be replaced by Lucas. I wouldn't worry. If Lucas is in the game, he will be the same as Ness was so I wouldn't worry.

I don't see how replacing Marth with Ike indicates that Ness will be replaced by Lucas. I mean, come on. They are two different situations.

Ike and Marth are both from the same series, sure, but Ike is from a more popular game in North America, where as Marth's exposure has been minimal, and boosted because of his inclusion in Smash Bros. Ike is a more reasonable choice since he is more popular here than Marth is.

For Lucas and Ness, you're debating characters from two games that barely got exposure here. The one difference is that Ness' game - Earthbound (Mother 2) - was actually released in North America whereas Lucas' game - Earthbound 64(Mother 3) - was never released in North America. So, if they are sticking with the same mentality they used for Ike, it seems like Ness is more likely to remain, because his game was actually released and popular here in North America.

Don't worry. I'm sure all the original twelve will return. I'm thinking they just had some regrets about Melee characters (like the clones, and maybe the less than popular Ice Climbers).

Why does everyone keep saying that? That doesn't mean someone is being replaced. Luigi wasn't replaced by Bowser, or Dr. Mario, or Peach. Jigglypuff wasn't replaced by Pichu or Mewtwo. In Smash, it's okay to have more than one character repping a game. Just means we'll have more fire Emblem Pride. And since Emblem's 2 and 3 are coming out on the virtual console (Soon), then Marth'll be in his light.

But, I digress, sorry for changing the topic. Anyway, Ness is probably gonna be back. He's just been so popular over the years. That's partly why he got moved up to a starter on Melee (I think, please don't quote me on that). I don't think Sakurai-sensei really wants to cut anyone that bad.

You could use the same argument to say that captain falcon not in there. Except we know he is due to his emblem appering on a certain AT.

“But, why haven't they shown him yet?” Because they just haven't. No big reason. Its the same for ness. So don't worry I'm sure he's in.

"The main character of Mother 3 for the Game Boy Advance (originally planned for the Nintendo 64), Lucas, was supposed to replace Ness, but because the game was delayed, Ness was kept."

This quote taken from wikipedia. If they didn't keep him in Melee because they really wanted him and only did it because the game was delayed, why would they not do what they were planning on doing the next time around and remove him? They'd have plenty of time to get around to it.

So this was gotten from Wikipedia.

Yeah right, I won't believe that until I see a credible source.

I think he's got a decent chance of returning, simply because he's practically become a veteran now. But we will see Lucas, one way or the other.

Personally, I'd also like to see a source more credible than wikipedia say Ness was supposed to be replaced by Lucas. I mean, they still had Fourside and Onett as well. Were they also planning different levels to go along with Lucas, whose story takes place much later in a different region? Maybe Lucas was supposed to be included as a clone of Ness, but they left him out since his game hadn't come out yet. Melee was pretty clone heavy, and I'd be willing to believe they were going to have a Ness clone. Maybe Lucas' moves would have been more similar to Ness' from Smash 64, while Ness' moves were given different attributes? Maybe they even added one of the other clones after EB64 got delayed and they needed a clone to take Lucas' place. Hell, maybe that's where we got Pichu. Who knows? No, seriously, does anybody know the truth behind all this?

Putting him in as a Ness clone is a good point. I guess all we can do is wait for the update on the dojo, unless someone finds a more credible source abou that replacing Ness on Melee story.

Ness should stay because he has a very loyal fanbase, plus he's like the only character from the original 12 to stand out in moves and was a very nice surprise when he was a character in the original smash, plus none of the original unlockables has been confirmed, and who likes that stupid Lucas anyway?

Lol, if they three were confirmed before Ness it would be very stupid to think Ness wouldn't be in the game, plus they can't replace him with Lucas if they put any of the Earthbound characters like Paula, Jeff or Poo.

It's not as easy to fake information on wikipedia as one would believe. I've tested their screening process and have gotten my schools IP banned in the process. They check all edits with in a day.

I won't believe it unless I see a source of where the claim came from.

I think it's absolute crap and people should stop making claims from it.

There is no proof that Ness won't make it back.

Well, then... I've been disproved.

Kind of sad, too. I don't want any of the original 12 leaving.

ness is probably gonna be included as a playable character just by judging the fact that on the official site by the item from earthbound there is the icon that was used for ness in the other games and usually if an icon is present a character from that game series is going to be playable. also there is only 1 open slot in the returning characters section so its either gonna be him or capt. falcon.

Are you basing this on the fact that there's only one square missing in the bottom row of the Veteran list on the Dojo website?

Because they just add more rows when they get new characters, you know. >_>

So it's entirely possible that C. Falcon and Ness will both return.

Honestly I think it would be dumb to replace Ness; unless Nintendo plans on bringing over Mother 3. It serves no purpose to replace a character that has appeared almost World-Wide with one that's a Japan exclusive.

Although with the adding of Lucas if recived well Nintendo could decide to bring over Mother 3 based on the reception he got from Brawl. Ness and Lucas are so similar though they could pretty much be alt costumes.

well i kind of figured there would be more characters than there are current spaces so they would inevitably make more room but what i meant was that it seems the spaces they have up there are characters that are going to be availiable from the get-go while the ones that are added later on will be secret/unlockables.

so ya its fully possible ANY of the past characters might return but theres only room for 1 more character in the veteran section right now so im guessing that'll be the final one for starting characters.

But when the Dojo first appeared, there was only one row. Then, when they updated over 4 veterans, they made another row. And then another after they passed 8. They just make rows as needed. There's no real reason to believe that this will be the last row for the starting roster, nor that Sakurai even cares about having an even number of characters in each row.

I don't see why we can't have two EB reps. Lucas and Ness FTW.
because they're too similar and could be clones
well, The Studio can make a different moveset for Lucas, but who knows...

I'm not against Ness, actually he has been my favorite since N64 too.

and, about some posts in the first page:

Ness has more chances to leave than Marth. why? as i said, Lucas and Ness are too similar. Ike and Marth have different style: Marth is more elegant and sophisticated while Ike is strong and heavy (Smash Dojo said that). Actually, Ike is more like Roy (and I think that Roy will leave). So why will Marth leave? cuz his blue hair? ò_õ

Whoever said something about Marth...

Marth=Unlockable. Unlockable=Updated after Dec. 3rd.

Ness... He'll be in. Possible Lucas too. I'm sure Sak-man wanted more Mother representation, anyway.

I don't play as Ness all that much, but one of my friends does. Quite frankly, I think that there is no reason to remove anyone from the previous games (except maybe the clones, unless you're going to give them new movesets) and there really is no reason to worry about Ness being unable to make it. Even if Lucas is included, Ness would be a simple revamp and they have already shown the Franklin Badges, so there's no reason that Ness isn't coming back.
My guess is that he's going to be unlockable this time around, and honestly think (and hope) that the characters Sakurai is showing us are only the ones we start out with, and there will be an overwhelmingly larger amount of characters that are unlockable after that, inlcuding any people form Melee that don't make it back and more characters that we would never have expected (maybe some being 3rd party?).

In other words, calm down, no need to worry. Ness will be back in some form or another.

People that don't like Ness haven't played Earthbound...

that's the only possible conclusion.
