not sure if this has been asked yet, but where were all the Japanese players (Otori, Kakera, 9B, Mikeneko, Rain, etc.)? The only one that was there was Shogun.

Most couldn't afford it, had their job, quit, or only play brawl when they feel like it. Mikeneko kind of just randomly shows or doesn't show up at Japan tournaments for example.

Just going to guess they were in Japan.

I agree though Apex isn't nearly as hype without them.

But that could also be due to the lack of stream matches :(

Almost none of them made it out. It's a shame but travelling isn't exactly cheap. Also some of them have quit as well.

And I agree with the above poster. Because of this and no Armada in Melee singles, it's really feeling like just another big tournament for Melee and Brawl rather than an Apex. Only thing that has made me feel this is a more special event is Project Melee and Ohmza (spelling?), the Japanese Melee Yoshi player who got 9th. It it weren't for those, I'd easily believe this was a regular Smash major.

aMSa, haha. He played incredible this tournament, but it was a shame he couldn't break Top 8.

Yup, I don't think a mid-low tier player has ever done this well at Melee major, at least not at a recent one. And no I do not consider Dr. Mario to be mid or Pikachu, more like high-mid if anything.

It just goes to show what happens when people think outside the box and are willing to put in the work instead of just following the herd and going straight to top tier.

Edit:

Now that I think about it Seagull Joe also got 9th in Brawl with Wolf today, but he's not international of course. Also, I think a lot of people always have thought Wolf was underrated, only a few terrible matchups keep him down imo, if he can avoid these he can do fine vs most top/high tiers.

Still it's nice to see mid-low tier heros doing so well at such stacked events.
