first off, id like to mention that im fairly new around here, so im not sure if this thread should be here or not.

so id like to learn competitive melee. the thing is, i havent touched the game in ~8 years, so im not really familiar with the metagame today. i do know some competitive terms, like wavedashing, wavelanding, L-cancel, etc.. im just not too fond of performing them consistently. even worse, im not even sure if thats the proper way to start out. to put simply, are there any tips or guides you guys can provide me with?

another favor of mine is that is there a simple way of playing melee on a softmodded wii? i tried installing melee multiple times, but it never works out in the end. i dont need an iso or anything, im just wondering if i can find a very simple way to mod melee on my wii.

thanks for reading!

Honestly, there are a bunch of posts on this same thing if you scroll down a bit, and I'm getting tired of answering the same question over and over again.

To sum it up, what you can do is watch pros and join your scene.

Lean basic tech (go look up Wak's advanced how to play video) and then move onto character specific stuff when you figure out who to main.

Modwise you can use Dios Mios or Nintendont. Good tutorial here for not only making the 20xx iso (great training tool) and also loading it (via dios mios only)

Head over to the Perfect Marth Thread in the Marth Character Discussion Thread. I'd post a link, but I'm limited currently. [AirFair pls.]

This will get you started. Its a giant link drop that may seem overwhelming at first, but you'll find a bunch of techs that are Marth essential. Practice will be your best friend. Never give up. Establish your fundamentals, combine it with the meta in the thread, and utilize the Marth Character discussion that the boards have.

Enjoy the boards and welcome to the smash community!

Lol, it may not be the Marth boards, but we might as well tackle the character he's shown us.

A few of the professionals to emulate Marth-wise are PPMD, Mew2King, and PewPewU. Analyze their sets and see why they won or lost. It helps to improve game-play.

I'd advise you to try everyone out; you should play the character you like best.

I am a few months ahead of you recme. Like you, I was obsessed with the game back in 2002 or so. I've been watching every bit of top level play since the start of 2014 and following every new tourney on Twitch, and while all that helped, it was no substitute for getting to finally sit down and play it - which I finally did in December. In early February I was able to start playing other people consistently and I have grown a lot. My point is that watching videos will only go so far. Link up with your local scene to really see yourself improve.

All of these techs will come with practice.

What I've been doing to get better at Smash is study advanced techniques and apply them to my own playstyle. Don't be afraid to leap out of your comfort zone and try new things. Also try to watch as many professional matches as you can and analyze what they're thinking as they play. The more you play, the better you get, so play often and don't go on a dry streak or you'll regret it. Also learn character matchups and how they affect your playstyle. Most importantly, have fun.
